This summer's disappointing box office got a much needed injection of excitement last weekend with it's $100 million plus earnings from the opening of Toy Story 3 and even with two major new contenders, Grown Ups and Knight and Day, entering the charts this week the critically raved Pixar film managed to hold on to the number one spot for a second week in a row with an additional $59 million.
Toy Story 3 features the return of Woody, Buzz and all your favorite toys along with an all-star cast of voice actors, which include Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Michael Keaton, Wallace Shawn, John Ratzenberger, Jodi Benson, Don Rickles, Estelle Harris, Ned Beatty, Timothy Dalton, Jeff Garlin, Kristen Schaal and Whoopi Goldberg. While the film did drop almost 50% from it's opening weekend, it still managed to earn an impressive $14,647 on each of it's 4,000 plus screens. In fact, the movie made around $18 million on Friday alone. Now in just two weeks the film has earned roughly $226 million, surpassing it's $200 million production cost and making it by far one of the biggest hits of the summer.
Debuting at number two is the family comedy Grown Ups about five childhood friends who reunite 30 years later for a vacation with their families staring the comedy "Dream Team" of Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James, David Spade, and Rob Schneider. The film had a decent opening bringing in almost $14.5 million on Friday alone and went on to earn around $41 million for the weekend. The film was released on 3,534 screens and made around $11,602 on each. With a production budget estimated between $70 and $80 million, the studio is well on its way to earning back its initial investment.
Opening at a somewhat underwhelming third place, considering who stars in the movie is the action/comedy Knight and Day about an ordinary girl who unintentionally gets involved with a secret agent starring super star actors Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. The film actually had a two-day head start on Grown Ups, opening on Wednesday, and still only managed to make a disappointing $3.8 million on its opening day. The film was seen on 3,098 screens and earned $6,617 on each for a weekend total of around $27 million, which is a far cry from its purported $125 million production cost.
Dropping two places from number two last week to number four this week is the re-make of the classic Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita underdog story The Karate Kid. The film moves the action from California to China and stars Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan in the lead roles. The movie was produced by Smith's superstar parents Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. While the film did drop almost 48.5% from the previous week it was added in seventy-seven theaters and managed to make around $4,118 on each of its 3,740 screens, earning an additional $15.4 million this weekend. The movie has now made an impressive $135 million in just three weeks of release, far surpassing its $40 million production cost.
Finally, rounding off the top five this week is the big screen adaptation of the classic '80s TV show, The A-Team, which starred George Peppard, Dirk Benedict, Dwight Schultz and Mr. T. The A-Team features an all-star cast which includes Liam Neeson as Col. Hannibal Smith, Bradley Cooper as Face, Quinton Jackson as B. A. Baracus and Sharlto Copley as Howling Mad Murdock, who together are an elite unit of soldiers of fortune, eventually living in the Los Angeles underground, hunted by the government for a crime they didn't commit. The movie dropped 58.3% this week and was seen in three hundred and two less theaters than the week before. Still the film managed to earn roughly $1,851 on each of its 3,242 screens for an additional $6 million this weekend. The film has now earned around $62 million in three weeks but will still have a ways to go if it hopes to earn back its $110 million production cost.
Doing well in limited release this week is Oliver Stone's new documentary South of the Border about Venezuela's controversial President Hugo Chavez. The film only opened on one screen but managed to earn roughly $21,000 in it's opening week.
Also doing well in limited release is the documentary Restrepo about the Afghanistan War. The movie was seen in only two theaters but earned around $15,250 on each for an opening weekend total of around $30,500.
Next week will see the release of two highly anticipated new films in wide release and one in limited release over the 4th of July weekend. First up is the long awaited third chapter of the phenomenally popular Twilight film series, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, (Taylor Lautner, Dakota Fanning, Anna Kendrick, Ashley Greene, Peter Facinelli, Billy Burke and Bryce Dallas Howard.
Also next week in wide release is M. Night Shyamalan's long awaited adaptation of the popular Nickelodeon animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender, simply entitled The Last Airbender.
Finally, in limited release next week is Ray director Taylor Hackford's new film, Love Ranch, based on a true story about a legal Reno brothel in the late '1970s starring Oscar winners Helen Mirren and Joe Pesci. So please check back in seven days to see who comes out on top at the box office next week!
Toy Story 3 was released June 18th, 2010 and stars Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Ned Beatty, Don Rickles, Michael Keaton, Wallace Shawn, John Ratzenberger. The film is directed by Lee Unkrich.
Grown Ups was released June 25th, 2010 and stars Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, Rob Schneider, Salma Hayek, Maria Bello, Maya Rudolph. The film is directed by Dennis Dugan.

Heads Up! Early reviews on Rottentomatoes.com are VERY BAD on Airbender! This movie will flop! It will have a midnight show, but I do believe TS3 will come out ahead, as it should. The best summer movie so far...Hands down is Toy Story 3!

hahaha sorry monkeyiron, I have to agree with Diaigma here buddy. Toy Story 3 is going into it's third weekend, It's already lowered to around $60 million it's second week which tells me that it's third will be around another $40 million which is still good, but not enough to handle the oncoming train that is known as Twilight. Airbender should also do better than Toy Story 3 as well.

What alternate universe are you hailing from? :P
It's Toy Story 3 that doesn't stand a change next weekend, ya goof :P

Excellent. So far Box Office Mojo is reporting 4000 screens to twilight, 3000 for Airbender.
About what I figured it would be. You can already see what the #1 film will be :P

Anytime man. Dude that's great. They're selling the tickets at the AMC I go to finally and they're selling like crazy now! The other theaters around here are already sold out for the midnight showing, so far so good.

That's what I'm expecting, too, with Airbender being 2nd, I mean.
@Dark enV
Thanks for the backup. I knew we had a troll on our hands with that one. I just checked with my friend at Cinemark. Yep. He's giving Airbender a 4th screen, 1 in 3D. Twilight gets 5

I'm not saying The Last Airbender will stop Ecipse I'm just saying it will stand it's ground and keep it close.

I know it was the name of the cartoon series, but it got dropped for the movie. Just saying.
I think you underestimate the power of the teenage girl lol Obviously, more people than that will be seeing Eclipse, but that's the target audience.
I don't think even angry fanboys seeing the Last Airbender in rebellion can stop Eclipse.

I am wrong about Grownups though.

The Last Airbender has better effects and a better story line to reach more than just the fans of the show and Avatar was the name of the cartoon serise before (Avatar) the movie came out so it can also be used when talking about the movie. And I still say it will be closer than everyone is saying. Also Eclipse is coming out on Tue. and Last Airbender on Thur. By the weekend more families will be out trying to catch The Last Airbender; not Eclipse.

@(Insert Username Here), actually since Eclipse is opening on a wednesday it won't be making as much as New Moon on the weekend (Fri-Sun). My guess would be from $70-$80 million on the weekend using the Harry Potter films as an example.
@moviesRme Toy Story 3 will definitely beat Grown Ups, most who saw Grown Ups hated the film and no good word of mouth has spread for it.

T.Clark
Aw man, I keep forgetting that Eclipse is opening on Wednesday...I still think it'll beat Last Airbender, though.
In that case, moviesRme's figures seem pretty accurate, except for Grown Ups being at #3. No way in hell. I'd also drop Last Airbender down to 70 million-something.
2 years agoby @insertusernamehereFlag
T.Clark
How the hell would Grown-Ups be at #3 when it didn't even surpass Toy Story 3 on its opening weekend?
Eclipse will make more than 92.8 mil. New Moon made 142 mil in its opening weekend, and this will surely surpass it. The Last Airbender(not Avatar), won't be that close to Eclipse. Your figures need some rethinking.
2 years agoby @insertusernamehereFlag
moviesRme
My guess for Fri.-Mon only is Boring Eclipse#1 $92.8 mil., Avatar#2 $89.9, #3Grown-ups $32.5 mil. is my top 3.

So you are a troll, then?
How about that wager, then? Are you confident in your prediction or not?
Multiple accounts, huh? Thanks for admitting that, because it invalidates any truth your prior comments had. You're trolling movieweb, plain and simple. Your stories do not measure up to what I'm seeing in the industry. Enjoy your hobby.

Are you sure you aren't talking about Twilight? I mean, I have several big cities in our company top 5 theatres in the state that are selling very few, if any at all at their complex? All I can say Diaigma is by looking at your picture is you are obsessed with this film. I love to come on this site and watch all these freaks and geeks obsess about their movies...Last Airbender is just not going to perform that well in the states. Oh sure, overall it might do ok, but I don't think it's a picture that makes 100 million at the box office. Our film buyer saw the movie...Said 3D was basically worthless and not needed in the picture. He said the story is ok at the beginning, slow in the middle for about 45 minutes, and then finished ok overall. It's just another picture that will do so-so business...Keep living in your fantasy world...I will live in the real world where this film directed by Shama-lama-ding-dong will do nothing but go wrong! This film is #3 this weekend, at best! Mark it down!

Airbender is currently the most popular topic on Twitter.
Sources say that Airbender has already earned back most of its 130 million marketing campaign with merchandising alone!!!
What does that tell you?
30 theaters in your chain and no more than 10 tickets sold? What are you talking about? way to be general. My midnight showing is already sold out, and my source (a friend who manages a local Cinemark) is considering upping Airbender to 4 screens because of advanced ticket sales.
Airbender will do fine. Mark my words.

That's just a number graph, an example, Toy Story 3 had less people on FB click on it. I have faith in it but it will all depend on how well the movie was done and if people want to continue to see it. I work in the industry too, and the theaters down here that I go to have already sold out of midnight showings, 30 theaters really isn't anything, besides most people choose to buy tickets the DAY they go see it not always in advance, which will account for the money made. There's no point in arguing with you, you'll just see this weekend.

Ooohh...Way to sell yourself short. If this movie is going to be big..Why not go for a bigger choice of movies other than Robin Hood & Prince Of Persia....What, no faith in the picture? The way the summer has been, being I work in the industry, I hope this film works, but I really have a hard time grasping that it will. If the film has a fan base, I hope they come out, but again, I just don't see it. And if all 180,000 facebook fans even do come out to the movie, that only accounts for 1.8 million in box office revenue. That my friend, would be a failure. Prove me wrong...Make me eat my words....I just had lunch, but would be willing to eat again. I just have a hard time believing that this film works. You better hope those 180,000 people come and see the film like 10 times...Then you have a 10 million dollar gross...I do know this for a fact...Our company, and we have over 30 theatres in the chain, has not sold more than 10 tickets in any location, for any show, at any time. That is NOT good. BTW, I really could care less if it sells overseas...Doesn't add anything to the states. I really only care if it works in our theatres.

No way TS3 will finish ahead of Airbender it has already been out for 3wks and say what you will about M. Night; his movies at least have one good week when they open; and this movie has way to many fans not to have one GOOD week weather your a fan of Airbender or not familar with the cartoon at all the effects still look awsome enough to have a good turnout.

You really have no idea how big the fanbase for this show is do you? It comprises of more adults and teenagers than kids. The fanbase isn't quite as big but close to the size of the Twilight fanbase. What facts are you stating? That in your small area where you live no one's interested in it? 179,000 people who are only on facebook clicked there were excited and also on Flixter 86% of over another 180,000 said they were going to see it. Those are the facts. Nobody goes by what one theater's employees say, they're not the only people going to the theater. The polls also have been viewed were the movie is one of the most anticipated of the year. I'm not making this crap up, and I'm not saying all of this because I'm a fan. Mark MY words! This movie is going to score big. Even if it doesn't show big #'s in the US wait till you see the worldwide gross, it's going to score bigger than Robin Hood and Prince of Persia easily.
