The new romantic comedy, No Strings Attached starring Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher, debuted at number one last week, knocking down reigning box office champ, The Green Hornet starring Seth Rogen. But with two new releases this weekend, including The Rite with Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins, and The Mechanic starring Jason Statham, the romcom was unable to successfully defend its crown.
Debuting at number one this week is the new horror film, The Rite. The movie stars Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins (Red Dragon), along with Ciarán Hinds (Miami Vice), Alice Braga (Predators), Toby Jones (Amazing Grace), and Rutger Hauer (Batman Begins). The film made $5,027 on each of its 2,985 screens for an opening weekend total of $15 million. The movie was just short of earning back half of its $37 million production budget in its debut.
Dropping one place from last week to number two is the new romantic comedy from director Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters), called No Strings Attached. The film features an all-star cast that includes Natalie Portman (Black Swan), Ashton Kutcher (Killers), Lake Bell (What Happens in Vegas), Cary Elwes (Saw 3D), and Oscar winner Kevin Kline (A Fish Called Wanda). While the movie fell 30.5% from last week, it earned $4,517 on each of its 3,022 screens for a weekend total of about $13.6 million. In two weeks of release, the film has made $39.7 million, which earns back its entire $25 million production budget and then some.
Opening at number three this week is the new action thriller from Con Air director Simon West called, The Mechanic. The movie is a remake of the classic Charles Bronson film and stars Jason Statham (The Expendables), Ben Foster (X-Men: The Last Stand), Tony Goldwyn (The Last Samurai), and Donald Sutherland (Klute). The film made $4,255 on each of its 2,703 screens for an opening weekend total of $11.5 million. The movie will need to hold strong in the next few weeks if it hopes to earn back its entire $40 million production budget.
Falling two spots from last week to number four is the new film from director Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), The Green Hornet, which is based on the classic super-hero TV series from the '60s. The movie stars Seth Rogen (Superbad), Jay Chou, Cameron Diaz (In Her Shoes), Tom Wilkinson (Batman Begins), Edward James Olmos (I'm Still Here), and Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds). While the movie fell 34.9% from last week, it earned $3,263 on each of its 3,524 screens for a weekend total of about $11.5 million. In three weeks of release, the film has made $78.8 million, which is still short of earning back its entire $120 million production budget.
Rounding off the top five this week, and slipping one slot from last week is The King's Speech. The film stars Colin Firth (Bridget Jones's Diary), Helena Bonham Carter (Alice in Wonderland), Guy Pearce (Memento), Geoffrey Rush (Pirates of The Caribbean: The Curse of The Black Pearl), and Michael Gambon (Layer Cake). While the film only went up 41.3% from last week, it was added in 877 theaters for a total of 2,557. The movie earned $4,342 on each screen for a weekend total of $11.1 million. In over two months of release, the film has now earned a total of $72.2 million at the box office, which is over four times its initial $15 million production budget.
Doing well in its debut in limited release this week is the new film from 21 Grams and Babel director Alejandro González Iñárritu, entitled Biutiful. The film stars Oscar winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men), Maricel Álvarez, Hanaa Bouchaib, Guillermo Estrella, Eduard Fernández, Cheikh Ndiaye, Diaryatou Daff, Cheng Tai Shen, Luo Jin, and George Chibuikwem Chukwuma. The film made $8,088 on each of its 57 screens for an opening weekend total of $623,000. The movie also recently earned actor Javier Bardem an Oscar nomination for best actor.
Continuing to do well in limited release this week is the new independent drama, Barney's Version. The film features an all-star cast that includes Oscar nominees Paul Giamatti (Sideways) and Minnie Driver (Grosse Pointe Blank), Rosamund Pike (An Education), Rachelle Lefevre, Scott Speedman (Underworld), and Oscar winner Dustin Hoffman (Marathon Man). The movie went up 75.5% from last week and earned $6,436 on each of its 39 screens, for a weekend total of about $251,000. The movie has now made $587,000 in three weeks of release, but will need to continue to improve if it has a chance of earning back its entire $30 million production budget.
Next week will see the opening of two new films in wide release and two in limited release.
Opening next week in wide release is the new underwater, 3D action-thriller, Sanctum, from producer James Cameron (Avatar). The film's cast includes, Richard Roxburgh (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen), Ioan Gruffudd (Fantastic Four), Alice Parkinson (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), and newcomer Rhys Wakefield.
Also opening in wide release next week is the new thriller The Roommate. The film stars an excellent cast of young actors and seasoned veterans including, Leighton Meester (Country Strong), Minka Kelly ((500) Days of Summer), Cam Gigandet (Burlesque), and Alyson Michalka (Easy A), with Billy Zane (The Phantom), and Frances Fisher (Titanic).
Opening in limited release next week is the new romance film Waiting for Forever. The movie's cast includes, Rachel Bilson (Jumper), Tom Sturridge (Pirate Radio), Nikki Blonsky (Hairspray), Matthew Davis (Pearl Harbor), Richard Gant (Hudson Hawk), Blythe Danner (Little Fockers), and Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins (Eat, Pray, Love).
Finally, also opening in limited release next week is Frankie & Alice. The movie stars Oscar winner Halle Berry (Catwoman), Stellan Skarsgård (Good Will Hunting), Matt Frewer (Watchmen), and Phylicia Rashad (For Colored Girls). i love me some Natalie Portman so i am glad that her movie at least made more than its production costs. I hope she doesnt fall into that Rom-Com rut so many other promising actresses fall into. she is so talented in the right hands. Seeing her in black Swan makes me wonder why Lucas couldnt get a lil more out of her in his SW movies. Oh well why beat a dead horse.
