After four weeks of battling it out for the top two spots on the box office charts, Sandra Bullock's football film The Blind Side, based on the true story of NFL Offensive Lineman Michael Oher, and the Twilight sequel, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which finally lost it's number one crown last week to the gridiron flick have finally both been bounced from the top spot by newcomer The Princess and the Frog. The Disney animated film based on the classic fairy tale is the studio's first hand-drawn animated musical in several years and had been doing quite well over the last few weeks in limited release but after adding an additional 3,432 theaters this weekend conquered the box office with an estimated $25 million earning roughly a quarter of it's budget back. However, the Sandra Bullock vehicle, The Blind Side, continued it's winning ways scoring an additional $15.4 million for a total of a whopping $150 million.
Clint Eastwood's Nelson Mandela biopic, Invictus, was also able to crack the top three on it's first week on the charts with an impressive $9 million. The film which is earning awards and critical acclaim left and right was in a total of 2,125 theaters this week end and made roughly $4,275 per theater. The teen-vampire juggernaut, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, also continued to take a bite out of the box office this weekend with an additional $8 million bringing the films impressive total to a little over $267 million in just four weeks. Finally, rounding out the top five and just managing to hold on to a top five spot in it's sixth week on the charts is the holiday film, Disney's a Christmas Carol, featuring Jim Carrey as Scrooge in 3D. The film, which entered the charts at number one but has been holding on to the last two spots of the top five ever since continues to draw traction as we get closer to the holidays by earning an additional $6.8 million this weekend.
In limited release, the highly anticipated new film from acclaimed director Peter Jackson, The Lovely Bones, based on the beloved book of the same name did quite well considering it was only shown in three theaters. The film, which made on average of $38,667 per theater that it was shown in, grossed a total of $116,000 over the weekend. Also doing well in limited release is Up In The Air from Juno director Jason Reitman starring George Clooney as a traveling corporate axe-man, now in it's second week at the box office. The film, which was added in roughly fifty-seven theaters this week made $34,028 per theater for a total of $2.45 million over the weekend and roughly $4 million total gross so far. Finally, fashion maven Tom Ford's directorial debut A Single Man starring Colin Firth and Julianne Moore, which is getting rave reviews also showed impressive numbers over the weekend making $24,000 in each of the nine theaters that it was shown in for a total of $216,00 in it's first week.
Next week will see the holiday film and award season continue to heat up with the release of several highly awaited big films and Oscar contenders. One of the most anticipated films of the year and probably the decade will finally hit theaters next week as James Cameron's 3D, outer-space epic Avatar is released. Also hitting theaters next week is the theatrical version of the popular musical Nine starring Oscar winners Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cottilard, Penelope Cruz, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Nicole Kidman, Sophia Loren and Judi Dench, as well as the royal biopic The Young Victoria starring Emily Blunt as the young queen. Finally, next week will see the release of the Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker witness-protection comedy Did You Hear About The Morgans? as well. Check back in seven days to see who comes out on top at the box office next week.
The Princess and the Frog was released December 11th, 2009 and stars Anika Noni Rose, Bruno Campos, Keith David, Michael-Leon Wooley, Jennifer Cody, Jim Cummings, Peter Bartlett, Jenifer Lewis. The film is directed by Ron Clements, John Musker.
The Blind Side was released November 20th, 2009 and stars Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw, Quinton Aaron, Jae Head, Lily Collins, Ray McKinnon, Kim Dickens, Adriane Lenox. The film is directed by John Lee Hancock.

Gump, there's a lot of people who felt Gran Tarino was a lackluster movie. Trust me. Like i said, the piece of sh*t didn't even get nominated. And it does not take reviews from critics who happen to be Eastwood fanboys to make a movie good.

It's because he was proven wrong, and now he's shaking in his sh*tstained pants trying to regain some sort of... well it's impossible for him to maintain dignity so I'm not sure what you call it.

Asked Anyone and i am pretty sure they will say Gran Torino was amazing and ask amercia they liked it to and critics seem to like it to and just ask its 80% on rotten tomatoes to your New Moon's 29% i am sure they will beg to differ yeah you are right no one liked gran torino i think no one liked New Moon... and it does not take a movie to get nominated to be a good movie!!!! Just look at Zombieland!, The Hangover, Suberbad, Star Trek, Harry Potter 6, Knocked Up great films never nominated???

230 mil is only the production budget. Add that to the 100 mil marketing making it 350. The production budget doesn't include the entire amount. In order to know that actual amount, take 230 and multiply by 2 than add on the 100 mil for marketing.

avatar official budget is 230 mil + 100mil marketing - producers said that 500 million is ridiculous number

ForrestGump, no one likes Gran Tarino. The f*cking sh*tty movie wasn't even nominated. If you like Gran Tarino, then you definitely love every Uwe Boll movie.
Josh, Avatar does not have a 300 mil budget. It's 500 dude.

God dammit. Stop with all the p*ssy and f*ggot talk. You guys are like f*cking hyper-masculine junior high schoolers who are verbally butt-f*cking each other to prove your superiority. It rings really pathetic. I expect as much from Newkill, but I expect better from Comrade.
As for Avatar, I wonder how much of that 300 million dollar budget actually went towards R & D for the new technology; I would imagine a good sized chunk. I don't think under those circ*mstances that it needs to make more than 200 million to be considered a success because its legacy in the effects industry is going to make it a success over the long run.

Comrade, it will have to make four times it's budget to be a financial success. As far as content wise, can't be counted because everyone has different opinions about movies. Remember this is a 500 million dollar budgeted movie. It's gotta do Transformers 2 numbers, domestically. Well, when this movie bombs, nothing of what i say will be bullsh*t but bull-fact. Unlike a p*ssy like you, I admit when i'm wrong like I stated earlier on about being wrong about Princess and the Frog not getting to the number one spot. It made to number one and i stated i was wrong.

Newkill just barrels out with negativity, gets called on his bullsh*t, and is too much of a p*ssy to admit he's wrong.

You think a movie needs to make four times its budget to be a success? Pretty high f*cking standards... I'd say 200 million domestically is a bit low, probably closer to 300, which means that combined with international grosses (usually about 70% of domestic), it will be way above the profit line, even after they sink a little money into advertising it.

Fallen, your right Freeman and Damon delivered wonderful performances, but that doesn't mean Invictus is a good movie. There are none Eastwood fan boys out there that realize Million Dollar Baby was Eastwood's last good movie.

The Princess and the Frog was a great movie. Glad to see it got #1. Can't wait for Avatar, since my favorite film critic gave is four stars.

The Narrator: The Better Man
Invictus was Eastwood's direction skills in a whole different way than usual. Very different from his past films. And Freeman shines along with Matt Damon. So it was a really good film. Newkill, what are you talking about?
And also, I still can't believe you liked New Moon that much... it's not like you.

Yes, I did. I see every movie that plays at my nearby Amc theater. It's cheap. Also, Avatar will only gross 200 mil domestically.

Newkill, did you even see Invictus?
Avatar may not have as strong an opening weekend as that sh*t New Moon (which you admitted you liked, f*ggot), but it will make its money, by and by.
