As predicted, director Christopher Nolan's Inception defeated the new Steve Carell comedy Dinner for Schmucks and the family film Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore last weekend to take the number one spot at the box office for a third week in a row. But this weekend Nolan's Oscar-caliber movie was no match for the much-talked-about new buddy-cop comedy The Other Guys, which knocked the buzz-worthy film out of the top spot for the first time in almost a month.
Debuting at number one this week is the buddy-cop action/comedy film The Other Guys starring Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne Johnson, Michael Keaton and Eva Mendes. The film opened on 3,651 screens and earned about $9,751 on each for an opening weekend total of $35.6 million. While the film had an excellent opening weekend it will still need to still attract audiences for a few more weeks in order to earn back all its entire $85 million production budget.
Falling one place to number two this week for the first time since it entered the charts almost a month ago is Inception, the extremely popular sci-fi action thriller from director Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight). The film stars an incredible cast of actors including Oscar nominees Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page and Ken Watanabe, Oscar winners Marion Cotillard and Michael Caine, as well as Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, and Lukas Haas. While the film dropped 32.3% from the previous week and was seen on 127 less screens, it still managed to earn roughly $5,442 in each of its 3,418 theaters for a weekend total of $18.6 million. Now in just four weeks the film has earned $227.7 million, which surpasses its purported $160 million production budget.
Debuting at number three this week the third chapter in the extremely popular dance film series Step Up, Step Up 3D. The film stars Adam G. Sevani, Sharni Vinson and Rick Malambri. The movie opened on 2,435 screens and earned about $6,366 on each for an opening weekend total of $15.5 million.
Dropping one place from last week to number four is Salt, the CIA espionage movie starring Angelina Jolie. In the film, Jolie plays Evelyn Salt, a CIA agent accused of being a Russian sleeper spy who must go on the run in order to clear her name. The film also stars Liev Schreiber (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (2012). While the film dropped 43.0% from the previous week and was seen on 295 less screens, it still managed to earn roughly $3,346 in each of its 3,317 theaters for a weekend total of $11.1 million. Now just about in three weeks on the charts the film has already earned $91.9 million, which is very close to earning back its initial $110 million production budget.
Taking a dramatic fall from its debut at number two last week to just barely rounding off the top five this week is the workplace comedy Dinner for Schmucks starring Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Ron Livingston, Jemaine Clement, Bruce Greenwood and Zach Galifianakis. The film dropped an astonishing 55.4% from the previous week despite adding about 93 theaters, but it still managed to earn roughly $3,495 in each of its 3,004 theaters for a weekend total of $10.5 million. Now just about in two weeks on the charts the film has already earned $46.7 million, which is pretty close to earning back its initial $69 million production budget.
Cracking the top ten this week for the first time since it debuted over a month ago is the new independent film from acclaimed filmmaker Lisa Cholodenko (Laurel Canyon) entitled The Kids Are All Right. The film is about a happy lesbian couple raising two teen-age kids who finally decide that they would like to meet their biological father. The movie stars a fantastic cast of critically acclaimed actors including Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo and Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland). Thanks in part to good reviews and good word of mouth the film managed to add 147 theaters this week despite dropping almost 26.1% from the previous week. The film earned $2,622 on each of its 994 screens for a weekend total of around $2.6 million. The movie has now earned $14 million in five weeks of release, far surpassing its $4 million production cost.
Continuing to do well in limited release this week, thanks to great reviews and Oscar worthy performances from it's leads, is the new independent drama Get Low starring Oscar winners Robert Duvall and Sissy Spacek and Oscar nominee Bill Murray. The film added 22 theaters this week and rose an amazing 165.4% from its debut last week. It earned $9,000 on each of its 22 screens for a weekend total of $234,000. The film has now earned $365,000 in just two weeks and if it continues to have good word-of-mouth as it opens in more cities it could end up earning back its $7 million production cost.
Next week will see the opening of three new films in wide release and one in limited release.
First up and opening in wide release next week is the testosterone-filled action movie The Expendables from writer/director and star Sylvester Stallone. Besides Stallone, the film stars an array of the toughest action stars from several different decades including Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, Terry Crews, Oscar nominee Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Also opening next weekend is the mush anticipated new film, Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World from Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright based on the popular series of comic books from author Bryan Lee O'Malley. The film stars a who's who of popular young actors including Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Brandon Routh, Alison Pill, Satya Bhabha, Ellen Wong and Jason Schwartzman.
Rounding off the list of films opening in wide release next week is Eat, Pray, Love directed by Ryan Murphy (Glee) and based on the internationally popular novel by author Elizabeth Gilbert. The film stars Oscar winners Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem, as well as Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins, Golden Globe winner James Franco and Billy Crudup.
Finally, opening next week in limited release is the Australian gangster film Animal Kingdom starring Guy Pearce, Joel Edgerton, Ben Mendelsohn, Jacki Weaver and James Frecheville. So please check back in seven days to see who comes out on top at the box office next week!
The Other Guys was released August 6th, 2010 and stars Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Steve Coogan, Michael Keaton, Eva Mendes, Dwayne Johnson, Samuel L. Jackson, Rob Riggle. The film is directed by Adam McKay.
Inception was released July 16th, 2010 and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Tom Berenger. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan.

@DarkenV and @moviegeek, this time is different. Inception will at the very least get a best picture nomination, which is more than TDK. This is thanks to the fact that the Academy raised the number from five to ten nominations. Look at last year- D-9, Inglorious Basterds, Up, and The Hurt Locker(which won) all came from the summer months. By adding to the number of nominations, movies like Inception can get in the door, which is sometimes all that is needed to make its mark.

Erm.. I don't know what a 'snumb' is :P My bad...

@avatarREALsequel I agree, the academy has made plenty of snumbs in the past (i.e. Brokeback Mountain, Saving Private Ryan, The Shawshank Redemption) but all of those have bigger fan followings than any of the respective champions of the year. And Inception will be that, regardless.

I don't care if Inception gets snubs. In my eyes and mind, much like rest of the world, it was and will prob be the best movie of 2010, whether the voters with the Academy recognize it or not.

Dark enV
@moviegeek exactly. I'm not saying it doesn't have a chance because it certainly does. I'm just really hoping they won't screw it like they did The Dark Knight.

It's all about timing. Both of those were December picture, hot with word of mouth and buzz. The Dark Knight came out in the summer. Inception may fall into the same fate. (it won't get snubbed, of course, but I doubt it will take home any big prizes.) Time will tell. So far it's the best movie of the year.

@Dark enV i kind of disagree when titanic was a blockbuster and it won 11 oscars lol

@ejk1, I believe Inception has a real chance to win some Oscars too but the thing that will ultimately hurt it is that it's a blockbuster. Stupid I know but look how The Dark Knight got screwed with Best Pic and Best Director and Best Score noms. But I really hope it gets some real good nominations at the least, Nolan better freaking get a nomination or I'm gonna go nuts!!! LOL

I'll check out The Other Guys tomorrow, and maybe see Scott Pilgrim on Friday or next week. I'm not really interested in The Expendables.
Inception has a real chance to win many Oscars. The Hurt Locker was a summer movie from last year, and look at how it cleaned up at the Oscars. The additional nominations for Best Movie make it possible for movies like Inception to get a fair chance.
