I remembered seeing "The Lion King" twice on vacation in Phoenix visiting relatives when I was 6, way back in summer '94. Definitely one of their best, if not the best of their animated films of the past two decades.
...Loved "Contagion" too!! Very impressed....Gave that an A- too ...Glad to see it's still int he Top 5!!
PS:
As of September 18, Contagion has grossed an estimated $44.2 million in the United States and Canada and $2.1 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $46.3 million.....CONGRATS!!
I was surprised at how packed my theater was to see the Lion King when I went to see it. But it is a classic movie, and it is great to see it at the top of the box office.
@moviegeek When I went to see Warrior last night at 10 it was practically empty. Guess that explains why =/
What this does prove however is that ticket prices aren't an excuse for bad box office results. I'm assuming that 95% of american families own the movie in some format and they still chose to pay the $13 or whatever to see it. Indeed, if you play you're cards right it goes a long way.
I saw the Lion King at a 9:20 showing at NIGHT. You'd think there wouldn't be people there cuz it's a family film, right?
It was absolutely packed. And it was college-age kids and adults! A lot of fun to see the movie with a large crowd of people. I hope there aren't a bunch of copycat releases because of this, but Disney really played their cards right on this one. Bravo.
figured as much how the numbers would turn out this weekend cause everybody loves a Disney classic I love the movie so much still today but I already have the DVD and I dont want to shell out money for the 3D
@m2 so sad for drive? Really, Really. In Case you have forgotten drive's budget was 13 million so it made it's money back making 11 million this weekend at the box office. now that's happy. it's a good thing. another huge hit for FilmDistrict. SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Of course Lion King would come out on top. 1) It's f*cking Lion King in 3D. 2) Straw Dogs is getting sh*t reviews. 3) Drive is more of an indy film in a main stream world...which is probably why it was so f*cking great.
you guys come on Drive and Warrior haven't even been released in the UK yet.
Tom Hardy's fan base is massively and majority the UK, so it will rake in a lot of money this week when its released over here on Weds. & Drive after all is an 18 rated flick and well didn't have a massive marketing campaign, its more in the underground circuit and festivals
More people need to see Drive. It's the best movie I've seen all year. And I was really hoping Warrior would get a bigger box office this weekend, that's very sad they didn't.
Feel bad for Warrior and Drive not getting the profit they deserve. Don't get me wrong, Lion King's great, but the theater is for something new experiences.
Yea but don't forget, Disney puts their releases in the vault. So Lion King disappeared from store shelves in 2004, a year after it first hit DVD. Many people probably dont own the DVD. If anything the VHS from 1994. But it will be on Blu-ray on October 4th and will sell like crazy then.

I have a feeling Warrior might get one of those Oscar season re-releases. Once a movie like that starts getting Oscar buzz, everyone wants to see it.

I love that Rise of the Apes is still at the top 10. I was gonna see Drive and/or Lion King this Friday but I was sick... I'll go next Friday.
And yeah, people should see Warrior, awesome film. The Debt and Contagion were great too.
