BOX OFFICE BEAT DOWN: The Final Destination Pulls in Another $12.4 Million
1) The Final Destination $12.4 million
2) All About Steve $11.2 million
3) Inglourious Basterds $10.8 million
4) Gamer $9 million
5) District 9 $7 million
6) Halloween II $5.6 million
7) Julie & Julia $5.2 million
8) G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra $5.1 million
9) The Time Traveler's Wife $4.2 million
10) Extract $4.1 million
The highest grossing summer in box office history came to an end this holiday weekend, not with a whimper or a bang, but with a modest cull that was neither surprising nor disappointing. For the second week in a row, Warner Brothers' fourth installment of their popular Death franchise The Final Destination, directed by David R. Ellis, came in first with $12.4 million. With the film continuing to do so well in 3D, we can certainly expect that this won't be the "final" installment of this long running horror series. The film has made $47.5 million to date, with even more coin to be added after this Labor Day weekend calls it a close.
The Sandra Bullock comedy All About Steve debuted in second place, giving the actress her second substantial hit of the year. The film pulled in an estimated $11.2 million over the course of the weekend, though it was welcomed with a lukewarm reception. This week's other new comers didn't fare quite as well. Gamer, Neveldine and Taylor's second high-octane action film of the year, this one starring Gerard Butler, failed to muster up much attention. It arrived in fourth place with $9 million. Though, the worst opening in recent history goes to Mike Judge's Extract, which opened at number ten with just $4.1 million. This bodes well for Judge's track record. His films usually flounder and flop at the box office, but go onto become huge cult successes that rack up quite a bit of dough on the home video circuit. I doubt this is the last we'll here from this Jason Bateman comedy.
The only art house film to open this week was Cherien Dabis' dramatic comedy Amreeka. The film managed to garner the highest per screen average, taking in an estimated $50,000 at just 4 screens. That's an average of $12,500 per theater. If Amreeka had been given the 3,121 screens that Final Destination held down this week, it would have pulled in $39 million to be the highest grossing film of Labor Day weekend.
Next weekend will see a host of new films including 9, Whiteout, Sorority Row, and Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All by Myself. It's a pretty easy call that Tyler Perry will own this coming weekend.
The Final Destination was released August 28th, 2009 and stars Bobby Campo, Shantel VanSanten, Nick Zano, Haley Webb, Mykelti Williamson, Krista Allen, Andrew Fiscella, Justin Welborn. The film is directed by David R. Ellis.
Julie & Julia was released August 7th, 2009 and stars Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, Stanley Tucci, Chris Messina, Linda Emond, Helen Carey, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Jane Lynch. The film is directed by Nora Ephron.
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra was released August 7th, 2009 and stars Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Christopher Eccleston, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Byung-hun Lee, Sienna Miller, Rachel Nichols, Ray Park, Jonathan Pryce. The film is directed by Stephen Sommers.
All About Steve was released September 4th, 2009 and stars Sandra Bullock, Thomas Haden Church, Bradley Cooper, Ken Jeong, DJ Qualls, Keith David, Howard Hesseman, Beth Grant. The film is directed by Phil Traill.
Gamer was released September 4th, 2009 and stars Gerard Butler, Amber Valletta, Michael C. Hall, Kyra Sedgwick, Logan Lerman, Alison Lohman, Terry Crews, Ramsey Moore. The film is directed by Mark Neveldine, Brian Taylor.
Extract was released September 4th, 2009 and stars Jason Bateman, Mila Kunis, Kristen Wiig, Ben Affleck, J.K. Simmons, Clifton Collins Jr., Dustin Milligan, David Koechner. The film is directed by Mike Judge.

"The Final Destination"....according to USA Today and Newsday, The Final Destination debuted as the top of the North American box office, beating Rob Zombie's Halloween II, by earning $28.3 million during its first weekend.
"The Final Destination" also topped the box office in the UK.

big difference between final destination 3d and avatar, there is only "things" flying at u in final destination when they kill someone, while Avatar apparently its the whole film, like sam worthington's character is in his chair wheeling himself forwards its like your behind him pushing it

mikehd, i could not agree with you more. the quality of movies is gonna go down the toilet with this 3d takeover thats coming. but then i have to say yet again, a crappy ass movie is 10 times better in 3d. i know final destination and bloody valentine, etc. are crap by themselves, but the 3d visual just makes it so much more exciting. i watch this avatar trailer and it looks like nothing new to me, but when i saw it in 3d it made me interested again. i guess everyone needs to get ready for a change in this movie viewing world. the only thing that will make a difference is the quality of a 3d movie on dvd and blu-ray.

it's a shame that this movie is number 1 for 2 weeks after talking with a bounch of the kids who work at the theatre i work and they said the 2d version sucked but said the 3d version was better just because it was cool to see things come at you and that doesn't make since to because i've seen both version and they both sucked so guys get ready hollywood is about to shove alot of garbage 3d movies down are throats and alot people wil like it just because it's 3d forget about story plot any of that

Has anybody ever noticed that when there is a comment made about Newkill, August22 is the only one to say something about it. Hey Newkill quit pretending to be a girl. Just go ahead and have your sex change operation. its not like anyone will think less of you since youre nothing but a pile of sh*t in every one's minds on this site. By the way, everyone go and read Newkill's Halloween 2 review and then read all of the other reviews of the film on here. You will see that he likes to steal others reviews.

Blitz, your hilarious man. Because your pissed off that Halloween did bad in theaters, now your picking on the Saw franchise. Stop your whining you little bitch.
Yeah, Kingbrady looks like i overestimated Gamer. Too bad. But I'm pretty sure Tyler Perry will do number one because mostly all his films open up number one.

Really, Delgren, man get a life, and stop stealing people's profiles. Blitz, Newkill never said he hated Zombie. If you read the guy's review, then you would know that he did see it. Your just pissed because Halloween 2 was a bad movie. That's why it did so bad in theaters.

ya i know Saw isnt so great anymore but at least there is a storyline so to speak, final destination is the same movie jus different people dying and ways to die (Saw is similar on that aspect but their story is better)

Newkill shut the f*ck up about halloween you didnt even watch it. for the past eight months you have stated every day that zombie sucks and halloween sucks. yeah we hear your bitch ass crying so how about you shut up. if by some small chance, which i doubt, you saw the movie its your own dumbass fault. kingbrady do you know what else is a horrible franchise saw. saw is the batman and robin of torture porn.

Newkill200 are you sure this time about Tyler Perry, you were very wrong about Gamer in which I told you it wont be close to #1, Whiteout has alot of advertising, but there isnt anything appealing except snow, i think Tyler Perry will do #1 as well, he never disappoints in box office. They better not do another Final Destination that is a horrible franchise

9 is a gay ass piece of sh*t. I hope in the next final destination it's at least a decent story or one at all. Glad to see gamer made it to top five. Great District 9 passed the hundred dollar mark and Inglourious Basterds is about to do the same. I wish Halloween would have been further down, because it f*cking sucked. Tyler Perry will be number one no doubt.
