3) Brothers - $9.7 million
4) Disney's a Christmas Carol - $7.5 million
5) Old Dogs - $6.9 million

7) 2012 - $6.6 million

After three weeks on the box office charts Sandra Bullock's football film, The Blind Side based on the true story of NFL Offensive Lineman Michael Oher, finally takes away the number one spot from the Twilight sequel, The Twilight Saga: New Moon. The Blind Side, which was in an additional 186 theaters this week made $6,146 per theater for a total of $20.4 million over the weekend. The film, which only cost $29 million to make, has now earned its money back plus a hundred million equaling a total of $129 million. The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the sequel to the unbelievably successful 2008 teen-vampire film based on the books by Stephanie Meyer was also released in an additional 82 theaters earning $3,808 per theater for a total of roughly $15.7 million over the weekend. The movie, which cost about $50 million to make, has now earned four times that with a total box office of roughly $255 million.

The psychological thriller Brothers starring Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal as his brother who gets a little too friendly with wife, Natalie Portman, while he is off at war earned the number three spot on the charts. The movie, which was in 2,088 theaters made $4,646 per theater for an opening weekend total of $9.7 million. The holiday film, Disney's a Christmas Carol, featuring Jim Carrey as Scrooge moved up one place this week to take the number four spot on the charts. The film made an additional $7.5 million this week for a total gross of $115 million in its five weeks at the box office. Finally, rounding out the top five at the box office this week was the John Travolta/Robin Williams parental comedy Old Dogs, which made an additional $6.9 million for a total of $33.9 million in its second week on the charts, just shy of its $35 million purported budget.

In limited release, Disney's The Princess and the Frog, which is the studio's first hand-drawn animated musical in several years, has done modestly well. The film, which has only been in two theaters for the last two weeks has already grossed over $2.4 million and looks to do even better when it goes wide next week. Also doing very well in limited release is Up In The Air from Juno director Jason Reitman starring George Clooney as a traveling corporate axe-man. The film, which was only in fifteen theaters in it's first week made $77,33 per theater for a total of $1.1 million, showing a lot of promise going into next week where it will be released in several additional theaters before it opens wide on Christmas day. However, not fairing as well at the box office this weekend was the Matt Dillon and Laurence Fishburne led heist film Armored, which was release in 1,915 theaters and only made $3,446 per theater for a disappointing opening weekend of only $6.6 million.

Next week will see the holiday film season continue to heat up with the release of several big Oscar contenders. First, the highly anticipated new film from acclaimed director Peter Jackson called The Lovely Bones based on the beloved book of the same name. Director Clint Eastwood is gaining a lot of Oscar consideration with his new Nelson Mandela biopic, Invictus, starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon which also opens next week. As does fashion maven Tom Ford's directorial debut A Single Man starring Colin Firth and Julianne Moore, which is in limited release. As previously mentioned, Disney's The Princess and the Frog finally opens wide next week and Broken Lizard fans will have an opportunity to see their new film The Slammin' Salmon next week as well. Check back in seven days to see who comes out on top at the box office next week.

The Blind Side was released November 20th, 2009 and stars Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw, Quinton Aaron, Jae Head, Lily Collins, Ray McKinnon, Kim Dickens, Adriane Lenox. The film is directed by John Lee Hancock.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon was released November 20th, 2009 and stars Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Robert Pattinson, Billy Burke, Ashley Greene, Anna Kendrick, Christian Serratos, Michael Welch. The film is directed by Chris Weitz.

You can make a pretty compelling case for racist subtext in Resident Evil 5 (though I don't agree with it).

The same activists group that said Resident Evil 5 was racist because it showed a white guy killing a bunch of africans?

The same activist groups Disney caved to when they changed the plot of Princess and the Frog so it made no historical sense, probably.

Yeah, I remember when King Kong was released all the activist groups were "outraged" because it depicted a large black creature kidnapping a white woman. They didn't exactly put it that way, but that's what they were going for...and they called the movie racist. Ugh.

Well, I don't think it will flop as magnificently as Waterworld by any means. I used King Kong because it was a large budget film that was expected to do really well because it was Jackson's followup to LotR, and it ended up making far less than predicted.

I think next King Kong is the wrong movie to use for bad turn out. The next Waterworld seems more like it.

I think Holmes and Alvin will both do really well. I haven't seen any of Ritchie's films since Snatch, but this looks to be his film with the broadest appeal (for a variety of reasons).
The big one to watch is Avatar. Considering the budget on it, it's going to have to work really hard to turn a profit. It could either be the next King Kong or it could be the next Titanic.

My decision stays Princess and the Frog will be number 1 next weekend watch!

On a side note, i think De niro should be nominated for best actor in Everybody's Fine. That was his best performance in a very long, long time.

Yeah, i hear Blind side is very good, but i have no interest in seeing it. I'm almost positive that it's a typical sports drama movie for middle America.

  12. Newkill3000

Lol, i haven't seen The Lovely Bones trailer anywhere except the internet. But then again it is a small budget movie from what i hear so i wouldn't really expect to see that much promotion for the lovely Bones. Also, The lovely Bones will be limited release. On it's theater count it only has 3 theaters. I've alot of Invictus ads. I still think Blind Side and New Moon will be battling for the top spot, but honestly this is a who gives a crap weekend. I think the big weekend is coming up next week with Avatar against New Moon and Blindside and maybe Christmas Carol.

Word of mouth is spreading fast about Blind Side, that's why it's doing so well.

All fair points. Certainly critical consensus doesn't dictate box office results. I have, however, seen several ads on TV, certainly more than for The Lovely Bones and about equal to what I've seen for Invictus. A week will tell, I guess. Anyone care to make predictions with figures?

  15. Newkill3000

Josh, Drag Me to Hell got rave reviews as well and it didn't perform so well. Also, Transformers 2 and New Moon got tons of bad reviews and guess what they performed very well. Enchanted did well because it was promoted like crazy. The movie was even parodied in Disaster Movie.

    2 years agoby @newkill200Flag

  16. Josh

Planet 51 was also slagged by critics whereas Princess and the Frog is getting very positive reviews. I don't think people have lost faith in Disney. Enchanted did very well too, and it was largely not even animated.

I love how Newkill was all polite in his explanation and then started trash talking lmao Ah, gotta love the new MovieWeb. I haven't been this excited to come on this site in a long time.

  18. Newkill3000

Josh, i don't think Princess and the Frog got a good enough advertisement. And that's surprising for a Disney movie, because they usually promote the hell out of there movies. I watch alot of tv and i've only seen like two or three trailers for this movie. hey, but who knows maybe it'll surprise me and end up number 1 or 2. But i think the real reason Disney isn't promoting alot of this is because they've kind of lost faith in 2d animation and are all about the Pixar stuff. There is that enough explaining for you, you piece of sh*t. Next time ask politely, Bitch. You know Planet 51 was the only family film to come out a few weeks ago and that did poorly, so really your claim is meaningless.

Next week, Blind Side and New Moon will continue to battle for the top spot, leaving Princess and the Frog at #3, Invictus at #4 and Lovely Bones at #5, unless those other movies decide to get crammed somewhere in between the new releases. That's my guess anyway. Princess and the Frog performed well in limited release so I'm expecting it will do well in wide release. I've been noticing Invictus TV spots every night on the hour, so it's getting noticed. Plus, everyone loves a good Eastwood film, whether he's starring or directing. Lovely Bones has a fan following with the book, but I haven't noticed any marketing for it and I doubt that fan following is big enough to get it above #5, or even in the top five for that matter. Me giving it that spot was being considerate seeing as how Brothers will most likely have a big nosedive in sales next week. Hell, Carol might stay in the top five. It's that time of "jolly" year after all.

  20. Josh

Newkill, why would Princess and the Frog perform terribly? At least back up your claim or it's meaningless. I think it will do well because it's the only children's/family film out right now until Alvin 2. Yes, for at least the first two or three weeks, it will do well.
Joekerr makes a good point about the Lovely Bones. We all know Jackson's last film, King Kong, underperformed at the box office, but I'm assuming Lovely Bones cost a lot less to make. It could go either way. Of the three, though, The Lovely Bones will be the one I'll see if I can only see one, because the novel is amazing.

"Poor Twilight emos... plz don't /wrist!"

You're the reason this country is f*cked up: ignorant pieces of sh*t. Not Twilight fans. I'd rather be a Twilight fan than an impulsive arrogant prick any day. Are you meaning to tell me that "emos" are the reason this movie has made nearly $300 million? If that many "emo" kids went to the movies, Tim Burton would be the richest man on the planet. No. This movie is being seen by more than just what you call "emos." People of all kinds are seeing it. God, people like you are the ones who should be slitting their wrists and dying because you serve no purpose to the development of this country or planet.

Putting more proof to my statement... I agree with Newkill on next week. Invictus will do well, cause it has Damon, Freeman, and Eastwoods name attached to it. Blind Side is doing so well, cause it's one of the greatest sports books you'll ever read. Twilight, cause the emo girls love boys that glitter in the sunlight... I'll not take the New Moon statement any further. My bet is someone else will. Lovely Bones doesn't have a whole lot of word of mouth. I know it's coming out, you know it's coming out, but none of my friends and family are asking about it... and the ppl I hang out with and my family, usually know when somethings coming out that they're excited about. Christmas Carol, yeah, it's out to make the long haul through the season... they better hope it starts pickin' up too. over $200mil to make and only $115mil in so far? I'm sure it'll make for the dvd sales and all, but not a blockbuster by far.

Princess and the Frog will do terrible. The battle will continue this weekend for the same two movies, Blind Side and New Moon. New Moon will get to the 300 mark. Invictus is the only movie coming out with a chance to take the top spot. Josh, they released Carol early because they knew it would linger on til January.

Next week should be interesting at the box office. I think Princess and the Frog will do really well and The Lovely Bones and Invictus should both do pretty well. I wouldn't be surprised to see Twilight knocked into the #5 spot after those three and The Blind Side.
I also think A Christmas Carol will continue to hang out in the top ten and do well the closer it gets to Christmas. They released that too early, but I guess Disney likely didn't want to have two films competing.
