The re-teaming of legendary director Martin Scorsese and international superstar-actor Leonardo DiCaprio proved successful again as the pair scored the number one spot at the box office this weekend with their psychological thriller Shutter Island. The film, which was seen in 2,991 theaters made $13,440 per theater for a total of $40.2 million in its first weekend, earning back a little over half or its estimated $80 million budget. Dropping a ridiculous 69.5% from last week to the number two position is the holiday themed film Valentine's Day, which was directed by Gary Marshall (Pretty Woman) and features an all-star cast that includes Julia Roberts, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Jennifer Garner, Anne Hathaway, Jamie Foxx, Ashton Kutcher, Topher Grace, Bradley Cooper, Taylor Lautner, Taylor Swift, Shirley MacLaine and Kathy Bates. The movie, which was seen in 3,665 theaters earned $4,682 per theater for a weekend total of $17.1 million, bringing its grand total to $87.4 million in just two weeks and easily surpassing it's $52 million production budget.
Astonishingly, while still down 31.8% from last week but moving up one spot on the charts to take third place is the film that just won't quit, Avatar. James Cameron's 3D outer-space epic juggernaut was seen in 2,581 theaters and despite loosing 104 theaters from last week still managed to earn $6,238 per theater for a weekend total of $16.1 million, which brings its total domestic gross to around an incredible $687.8 million. The film has not only been in the top five on the box office charts for over ten weeks, but has earned nine Oscar nominations, won two Golden Globes and made over $2 billion worldwide now making it the highest grossing film both internationally and domestically of all-time. Following behind it in forth place and dropping two spots from last week is the Greek mythology adventure film Percy Jackson & the Olympians: Lightning Thief based on the popular children's book, directed by Chris Columbus and starring Logan Lerman, Pierce Brosnan, Uma Thurman, Sean Bean, Catherine Keener and Ray Winstone. The movie, which dropped over 50% from its opening week, added 40 theaters earning $4,505 in each of its 3,396 theaters for a weekend total of $15.3 million, bringing its total gross to around $58.7 million in its second week but still quite shy of its $95 million production budget. Finally, rounding out the top five this week was the long awaited retelling of the classic hairy-monster story, The Wolfman, featuring Oscar Winner Benicio Del Toro as the shaggy-man and co-starring Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt and Hugo Weaving. The film, which dropped 68.7% from last week added only one theater earning $3,055 in each of its 3,223 theaters for a weekend total of $9.8 million, bringing its total box office gross to around $50 million in it's second week. But the movie will have to earn a lot more money if it hopes to breakeven and earn back its $150 million production budget.
Doing very well in limited release in their debut weekends are the independent films The Ghost Writer and The Good Guy. First, the Roman Polanski directed film The Ghost Writer starring Ewan McGregor, Pierce Brosnan, Kim Cattrall, Olivia Williams, Tom Wilkinson, Timothy Hutton and Eli Wallach earned an impressive $44,750 on each of the four theaters that the film was shown in for an opening weekend total of $179,000. Also doing well in limited release was the Manhattan based romantic drama The Good Guy featuring former Gilmore Girls star Alexis Bledel, Scott Porter and Bryan Greenberg. The movie, which had an edge on the competition by opening Wednesday before the weekend was shown in only nine theaters and earned $4,022 per theater for a total of $36,200 in its debut week.
Next weekend will see two new films enter into both wide release and limited release. First up, in wide release we have the Breck Eisner directed remake of the George Romero classic, The Crazies, about a plagued small American town starring Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell. Also opening in wide release next week is Kevin Smith's new buddy-cop movie, Cop Out, starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan. Opening in limited release is the post-Katrina road-trip film The Yellow Handkerchief, starring William Hurt, Maria Bello and Twilight star Kristen Stewart. Finally, in limited release next week we have the FBI-set action film, Formosa Betrayed starring James Van Der Beek (Dawson's Creek), Leslie Hope (24) and John Heard (Prison Break). So please check back in seven days to see who comes out on top at the box office next week.

What is stange is that last year the studios were saying "Shutter Island" was delayed due to Re-shoots ...poor test screenigns etc....and filming also a new ending was filmed ..... Now Paramount head executive Brad Grey blamed the recent economic downturn as the main decision behind the delayed release date.
Recent economic downturn ... What recent economic downturn!?? Hollywood can afford "Avatar" and a sleazy "Remake" of a "A Nightmare on Elm Street" ..but can't release "Shutter Island" last year!
Hmmmmm...!

In very limited release, "The Ghost Writer," from Oscar winning director Roman Polanski, (in four theaters), grabbed nearly $200,000.

I only said the Crazies would do well because there hasn't been a slasher flick in theatres lately, and they've been promoting it like crazy on TV.

I didn't find Shutter Island predictable. My wife did, but she guesses the end of every movie.

I enjoyed Shutter Island. Although the film slugged along at times, the performances shined and engaged, particularly from DiCaprio. You could feel and sympathize with his terror, anguish, and distress. Also, while it was extremely predictable, the ending worked in every way intended. Especially, the very last scene. It was not Scorsese's greatest, but it definitely deserves a "job-well-done."

Cop Out and The Crazies should open in #1 or #2 (I don't know which will be which. They're both R-rated), with Shutter Island dropping to #3, and Avatar in 4th. I don't think it will be a big difference between any of the titles, though. Probably something like $22 and $21 million for the first two, $18m for third, and $17m for fourth.

I figured Avatar would bounce back up again. It's virtually tied for #2 since Valentines day only earned $1 million more. Pretty surprised Shutter Island did so well being an R-rated movie, but then again it was very good and had pretty wide appeal for a Scorsese film. What comes out next week? I predict more decline for Valentine's Day.

Uh, it says in that report that it earned nine Oscars. No it hasn't. It's earned nine Oscar "nominations". And it's not going to win Best Director or Best Picture, Hurt Locker will. What it will sweep is the technical departments, which it deserves.
