The new comedy Hall Pass just barely managed to beat out Gnomeo and Juliet last week to take the top spot at the box office in its debut. But with four new films entering the box office race this week including the animated Western Rango, The Adjustment Bureau with Matt Damon, the teen drama Beastly, and the '80s comedy Take Me Home Tonight, the Owen Wilson comedy was unable to retain its box office crown for a second week in a row.
Debuting at number one this week is the new computer animated Western from Pirates of The Caribbean director Gore Verbinski called Rango. The film stars Oscar nominee Johnny Depp (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas), as well as Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers), Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine), Bill Nighy (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End), Alfred Molina (Spider-Man 2), Ray Winstone (Edge of Darkness), and Timothy Olyphant (I Am Number Four). The film made $9,701 on each of its 3,917 screens for an opening weekend total of $38 million. But the film will need to continue to do well in the next few weeks if it has any chance of recouping its entire $135 million production budget.
Debuting at number two this week is the new science-fiction thriller The Adjustment Bureau. The film stars Oscar winner Matt Damon (The Bourne Ultimatum), as well as Emily Blunt (Charlie Wilson's War) (Charlie Wilson's War), Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker), Michael Kelly (Fair Game), Daniel Dae Kim (Lost), John Slattery (Mad Men), Terence Stamp (The Limey), and Oscar nominee Shohreh Aghdashloo (House of Sand and Fog). The film made $7,375 on each of its 2,840 screens for an opening weekend total of $20.9 million.
Debuting at number three this week is the new fantasy romance Beastly, which is based on the classic Beauty and the Beast story. The movie stars Vanessa Hudgens (Sucker Punch) and Alex Pettyfer (I Am Number Four), as well as Neil Patrick Harris (The Smurfs), Lisa Gay Hamilton (Beloved), Peter Krause (Six Feet Under), and Mary-Kate Olsen (Full House). The film made $5,182 on each of its 1,952 screens for an opening weekend total of $10.1 million, which earns back over half of its initial $17 million production budget.
Dropping three places back from its debut last week to number four is the new comedy from There's Something About Mary directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly called Hall Pass. The film stars Owen Wilson (The Royal Tenenbaums), and Jason Sudeikis (Saturday Night Live), as well as Jenna Fischer (The Office), Alyssa Milano (Who's the Boss?), Christina Applegate (Going the Distance), and Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins (The Visitor). While the movie fell 33.4% from last week, it earned $3,056 on each of its 2,950 screens for a weekend total of about $9 million. In two weeks of release, the film has now earned about $27 million, which earns back over half of its initial $36 million production budget.
Finally, rounding off the top five this week and falling three spaces back from last week is the new CGI animated film Gnomeo and Juliet. The film is based on William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, and features the music of Grammy Award winner Elton John. The film also features the voice talents of James McAvoy (Wanted), Emily Blunt (Charlie Wilson's War), Jason Statham (The Expendables), and two-time Academy Award winners Michael Caine (The Dark Knight), and Maggie Smith (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince). While the movie fell 48.4% from last week, it earned $2,316 on each of its 2,984 screens for a weekend total of about $6.9 million. In three weeks of release, the film has now made around $83.6 million.
Unfortunately, not all of the new films released this week were able to find an audience.
The new '80s comedy Take Me Home Tonight couldn't quite crack the top ten and debuted at a disappointing eleventh place this week. The film stars Topher Grace (Predators), and Anna Faris (Lost In Translation), as well as Dan Fogler (Balls of Fury), Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four), Chris Pratt (Parks and Recreation), and Michael Biehn (The Terminator). The film only made $1,747 on each of its 2,003 screens for a disappointing opening weekend total of $3.5 million.
Next week will see the opening of three new films in wide release and three in limited release.
Opening in wide release next week is the new alien invasion movie from Darkness Falls director Jonathan Liebesman called Battle: Los Angeles. The film stars Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight), and Michelle Rodriguez (Avatar), as well as Bridget Moynahan (I, Robot), and Michael Peña (Crash).
Also opening in wide release next week is the new fairy tale based horror film Red Riding Hood from Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke. The film stars Amanda Seyfried (Dear John), as well as Max Irons (Being Julia), Lukas Haas (Brick), Billy Burke (Drive Angry), Michael Hogan (Battlestar Galactica), Michael Shanks (Smallville), Oscar nominees Virginia Madsen (Sideways), and Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight), and Oscar winner Julie Christie (Heaven Can Wait).
Finally, opening next week in wide release is the new computer animated film called Mars Needs Moms. The film stars Seth Green (Robot Chicken), Joan Cusack (Toy Story 3), Dan Fogler (Take Me Home Tonight), Elisabeth Harnois (A Single Man), Mindy Sterling (Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery), and Tom Everett Scott (Southland).
Opening in limited release next week is the new dramatic film Jane Eyre. The movie stars Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland), and Michael Fassbender (Jonah Hex), as well as Jamie Bell (Jumper), Sally Hawkins (Made in Dagenham), and Oscar winner Judi Dench (Quantum of Solace).
Also opening next week in limited release is a sequel to director Sebastian Gutierrez's Women in Trouble called Elektra Luxx. Carla Gugino (Watchmen) reprises the title role and is joined by returning cast members Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception), Marley Shelton (Grindhouse), Adrianne Palicki (Legion), and Emmanuelle Chriqui (Entourage), as well as new cast members Timothy Olyphant (Justified), and Malin Akerman (Watchmen).
Finally, opening in limited release next week is the new documentary I Am from Bruce Almighty director Tom Shadyac. The film features interviews with Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Coleman Barks, and Desmond Tutu. So please check back in seven days to see who comes out on top at the box office next week!

@gandoff2169 Haha, nice zinger with bringing up Snow White. Witches and witch craft to boot in that, and you don't hear people whining.

@dan1.. I 100% agree... Its like some people need to just relax. She talked like it was bad, but I have douts her kids felt the same. Gosh, Shrek to me, had more adult themed jokes then Rango to me. She didnt know what to say when I asked if she like Snow White and such, then pointed out the whole "witch craft" thing. lol

@gandoff2169 Rango was geared more towards an adult audience anyways. They say damn, hell, almost son of a bitch (the bitch part being bleeped out by a hawk hilariously), and that's it. Boo frickin' hoo. Get over it. lol. As for the praying to a false god thing, so what? Different cultures refer to God by different names and conceive of Him in different ways. Rango just took a Native American approach to it, and there is nothing wrong with that.
And as you said, we grew up with movies that had these same "offensive" themes in them, so I'm not getting what the big deal is :P
(my rant isn't aimed at you, but this fellow student you got into it with, of course).

I got into a heated debate with someone I went to school with about Rango. She was crying about some cussing and praying to a fake god thing. I was like, we watch Disney movies growing up. Had things from killing things, to witch craft; so please dont cry your "christian" faith sob stories out couse of a movie....

No way Rango made so little. I expected $60 mil. The first time I saw it it was sold out, the second time I saw it at my local theater and there was a line, There's never a line in my local theater. Also the place was mobbed not one seat left. But I guess the same went for Scott Pilgrim. Loved Rango 4.5/5
