James Bond's latest adventure Quantum of Solace dominated the weekend box office charts, debuting with a solid $70 million in first place. This is the biggest opening a Bond film has every brought in, outweighing Daniel Craig's first outing as 007 in Casino Royale by $30 million. That film made $40 million when it opened around the same time in 2006. It even beat Die Another Day, which premiered in 2002 with $47 million, the spy's best weekend until now. Quantum of Solace's three day haul placed it at number six on the James Bond franchise chart. By the time its theatrical run ends, it might be number one, a spot currently held by Casino Royale.
No other new film managed to crack the top ten this weekend. In second place was last weekend's number one stunner Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. It still managed to pull in a strong family audience, raking in another $36.1 million. Combined with last week's haul, that brings its cumulative grosses to $118 million in just two weeks of release. That certainly solidifies its place in 2008 box office history as a hit. The David Wain comedy Role Models also continued to build its audience. It took in another $11.7, proving that people still want to laugh. Its cumulative gross after two weeks now rests at $38 million.
Next weekend, Bond will face two great adversaries. The Vampires of Twilight and the combined evil forces of John Travolta and Miley Cyrus in Bolt. It certainly sounds like we are gearing up for a Thanksgiving Massacre. My money is on Bella and Edward, but Disney's CGI dog movie might just cause an upset. Lets hope that 007 can hold on!
Quantum of Solace was released November 14th, 2008 and stars Daniel Craig, Olga Kurylenko, Mathieu Amalric, Judi Dench, Giancarlo Giannini, Gemma Arterton, Jeffrey Wright, David Harbour. The film is directed by Marc Forster.
Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa was released November 7th, 2008 and stars Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Jada Pinkett Smith, Sacha Baron Cohen, Cedric the Entertainer, Andy Richter, Bernie Mac. The film is directed by Eric Darnell, Tom McGrath.
Role Models was released November 7th, 2008 and stars Seann William Scott, Paul Rudd, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Bobb'e J. Thompson, Elizabeth Banks, Jane Lynch, Ken Jeong, Ken Marino. The film is directed by David Wain.

That's the problem. Royale was made for both old AND new fans and it was expected that a direct sequel would follow the formula. People can't get that through their heads

I expected this. Too bad "QoS" wasn't as good. I think the producers & screenwriters seriously listened to the fans that moaned about lack of action in "Casino Royale" (2006) that wanted it to return to the action oriented "Die Another Day" (2002) for this end result.

I have no interest in "Twilight" & even "Bolt" for that matter!
I tried reading "Twilight"...& I found it so boring, & well so silly. I gave the book up after the readin gthe 2nd chapter...very silly!
Give me Harry Potter any day!!
The Up-Coming weekend (11/21/08) is going to be another weekend in dulls-ville!!
The films I can't wait to see this year are:
"Frost/Nixon"...."Valkyrie"..."MILK"..."Transporter 3".
"Australia"...!!!

Interesting numbers, Ringwraither. I can't imagine the numbers, but my guess is as follows...
1: Twilight
2: QoS
3: Bolt
4: M:E2A

I think Bolt is going to pull a #1 on Twilight. I expect:
Bolt: 66 mil
Quantum: 45 mil
Twilight: 32 mil

Brian's right. I said Twilight looks like crap today in school and the girls could have bit my head off

The Narrator: The Better Man
Royale is still the best bond film to me, but solace was more than worth it. My money says that it will be close, with Twilight #1, then Quantum, then Bolt, then Madagascar 2.

Quantum had better action but Royale had a better story... however... it did set up well for future films. Its obvious that there is a huge evil organization that the US and British secret services did not know about and have hardly scratched the surface on. Kind of like SPECTRE in the earlier Bond films. Quantum could have set it up pretty nicely for future and better Bond films.

Ha. Twilight is gonna KILL Solace. Don't underestimate the power of teenage girls. Believe it or not, their dollar is stronger than that of fanboys.

I really do not think Twilight will beat it, but stranger things have happened.

The movie was not really as good as Casino Royale.

Thats a pretty big number, I don't know if Twilight will reach that. Bond was pretty good though.

Wow...my $5.25 is in there somewhere. Gotta love matinees.
Now the real question is, will Twilight have a stronger opening than 70.4 million next week? Place your bets folks! Place your bets!
