I read that "Rum Diary" couldn't scrape up more than $5 million at 2,272 North American locations and is considered a "flop"!

They've already greenlit PA4. It's fine with me if they keep making them. If they're good, I'll enjoy them and if they're not, it doesn't ruin the ones that were good.
I will say that the third one did show a bit of diminishing returns, though. As tightly woven as the first two were, story-wise, the third one almost seems to have retroactively written its mythology.

$34 million sounds about right, doesn't seem to have the same appeal as the Shrek franchise. Up until its release I've been hearing "Are they actually making this movie??"
Agreed about Paranormal Activity though, time to take a breather.

@thedude1 Very true. They kept going up up up until it came down down down. If they're smart they'd take a break for at least a year to keep demand up.
As for Puss in Boots, this number is very underwhelming. What is it with Dreamworks and low opening weekends lately? I know that Halloween weekend threw this off a bit, but still. They've gotta get their act together quick on the animation front. Kung Fu Panda 2's dropoff grosses is still puzzling me to this day. Makes very little sense.

@shuabert Sounds very similar to Saw 3. And starting with Saw 4 they kept going down and down until they brought in 3D.

@shuabert I know right?! Can't wait to see what they have in store with Paranormal Activity 4!

Paranormal 3 has made over $100 million in ten days on a $5 million budget. That franchise is like a free pass to print money.
