In a surprising turn of events, it was the PG-13 rated remake of Prom Night that conquered the weekend box office. The Nelson McCormick directed thriller took in an estimated $22.7 million dollars to become number one on the chrats. With this sort of unsuspected success, it surely means that we will be seeing more PG-13 rated horror films in the very near future.

This week's other two big releases didn't fare quite as well. The David Ayer directed cop thriller Street Kings landed in second place with just $12 million, while Smart People hit way down in seventh place with $4.2 million.

The film with the highest per screen average this week happened to be The Visitor, which earned $88,000. That's $22,000 for each of its four screens. The documentary Young@Heart nabbed $52,300 on four screens, bringing the second highest per screen average with $13,075 at each of its locations.

Next week will see the release of the comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall, the horror film Pathology, and the kung fu adventure Forbidden Kingdom.

Prom Night was released April 11th, 2008 and stars Brittany Snow, Scott Porter, Jessica Stroup, Dana Davis, Collins Pennie, Kelly Blatz, James Ransone, Brianne Davis. The film is directed by Nelson McCormick.
