Box Office Beat Down: Prince Caspian Beats Back the Competition with $56.5 Million in First Place

Weekend Box Office

1)The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian $56.5 million

2)Iron Man $31.2 million

3)What Happens in Vegas $13.8 million

4)Speed Racer $7.6 million

5)Baby Mama $4.5 million

6)Made of Honor $4.5 million

7)Forgetting Sarah Marshall $2.5 million

8)Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay $1.8 million

9)Forbidden Kingdom $1 million

10) The Visitor $687,000

The second film in Disney's The Chronicles of Narnia trilogy entitled Prince Caspian topped the box office charts this weekend with $56.5 million. While it managed to conquer that number one spot, expectations for the sequel to The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe were not quite met. That film earned $65.5 million when it opened in December of 2005. A difference of 9 million dollars.

With no other major film opening this weekend, the rest of the chart was filled out by older films fighting to keep an audience. In only its second week of release, Speed Racer managed to earn just an extra $7.6 million, putting it in the fourth place position. That brings its very weak cumulative gross to $24.3 million, a sum earned by most films on their opening weekend. Speed Racer was once again thwarted by the powerhouse that is Iron Man. The popular Marvel comic book adaptation dropped to second place with $31.8 million. That brings its total ticket sales to $222 million thus far. Also beating Speed Racer for the coveted third place spot was the Ashton Kutcher/Cameron Diaz comedy What Happens in Vegas, which grabbed an additional $13.8 million. It is proving to be quite the little sleeper of the summer.

Next weekend will surely belong to the man in the hat. There is no denying that Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will top the charts when it bows on Thursday, May 22nd. But will it have the legs to carry it for more than one week? That is looking doubtful as Sex and the City: The Movie, which opens the following weekend, is destined to be one of the bigger surprise openings of the entire year.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian was released May 16th, 2008 and stars Ben Barnes, Georgie Henley, Skandar Keynes, William Moseley, Anna Popplewell, Sergio Castellitto, Peter Dinklage, Warwick Davis. The film is directed by Andrew Adamson.

That's a big figure for Narnia. Wonder what Indy will take this weekend? Will be surprised if it doesn't top that. But will be watching Prince Caspian myself, if it's good. Anyone see a review of it?

Sex and the city movie, my God. Sarah Parker is so f*cking fugly. If you have been unfortunate and have witnessed the trailer for this sh*t movie you saw the image of her in a wedding dress. She looked like a gay snow yetti. The series was stupid and the movie will be much worse. Who ever decided on a movie for this should be shot.

Narnia was really good. There is no way Sex and the City will get number one, I don't think it will beat Indy even in its second week.

"The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian"...was "OK"...not as good as the 1st film...I would give it a C+!

I also saw "What Happens in Vegas", not a bad film, that would be a B- in my book!

I read that when "Iron Man" was #1 in it's 2nd week out, it surpassed "Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!" as the highest-grossing film of 2008!!!! WOW! WOW! WOW!

Next week is "Indy 4"..already have my tickets for a 4PM showing on Thursday night...great way to spend the night at the movies after work!

56 million is not a bad number, and the movie was great so I expect it to be at number 2 next weekend. As for Iron Man....wow that's great another good weekend very well deserved! And Speed Racer haha the numbers suck for it and you can now conclude that it will NOT reach the 50 million mark. One other thing, there is noooooooo way Sex in the City is going to be number one at the box office! I say Indy at number one for at least two weeks. Sex in the City looks like another Speed Racer to me.

I contributed to that 31.2 million dollars for IRON MAN. It was well worth the money. I'm glad to see it's still going strong.
