BOX OFFICE BEAT DOWN: Paul Blart: Mall Cop Stands Tall with $21.5 Million for First Place

Weekend Box Office

1) Paul Blart: Mall Cop $$21.5 million
2) Underworld: The Rise of The Lycans $20.7 million
3) Gran Torino $16 million
4) Hotel for Dogs $12.3 million
5) Slumdog Millionaire $10.5 million
6) My Bloody Valentine 3-D $10 million
7) Inkheart $7.7 million
8) Bride Wars $7 million
9) The Curious Case of Benjamin Button $6 million
10) Notorious $5.7 million

For the second week in a row, Kevin James' security guard managed to keep his strangle hold on America. Paul Blart: Mall Cop came in first place at the box office, adding another $21.5 million to his savings account. So far, this fumbling comedy has earned $64.8 million and it has no intentions of slowing down. Paul Blart: Mall Cop is the first official hit of the New Year, and it will more than likely see $100 million before its out of theaters. Plus, look for it to make bank when it hits the home video market. I doubt this is the last we've seen of Blart or James.

Coming in second place was the werewolves versus vampires sequel Underworld: The Rise of The Lycans. This third outing in the franchise managed to pull in $20.7 million, which just wasn't enough to squash that pesky mall cop. This week's only other major new release was Inkheart. It failed to impress the crowds, slipping all the way to number seven with just $7.7 million to its name. It's poor performance just might mark the end of children's' novel adaptations. For the moment, anyway.

The film with the highest per screen average this week was Slumdog Millionaire, which was certainly helped by its Academy Award nominations. Playing on 1,411 screens, it earned $7,477 at each location for a total of $10.5 million. Two other films opened in limited release. The aliens versus Vikings adventure Outlander earned $53,200 playing on 81 screens, while the long-shelved Elmore Leonard adaptation Killshot brought in $10,060 on just five screens.

Next week doesn't offer Paul Blart: Mall Cop much competition. Liam Neeson returns to the screen to avenge his daughter's kidnapping in Taken, more ghosts abound in The Uninvited, and Renee Zellweger drops the comedy bomb New in Town. It should be a fun fight.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop was released January 16th, 2009 and stars Kevin James, Keir O'Donnell, Jayma Mays, Raini Rodriguez, Shirley Knight, Stephen Rannazzisi, Peter Gerety, Bobby Cannavale. The film is directed by Steve Carr.

Gran Torino was released December 12th, 2008 and stars Clint Eastwood, Christopher Carley, Bee Vang, Ahney Her, Brian Haley, Geraldine Hughes, Dreama Walker, Brian Howe. The film is directed by Clint Eastwood.

My Bloody Valentine 3D was released January 16th, 2009 and stars Jensen Ackles, Jaime King, Kerr Smith, Betsy Rue, Edi Gathegi, Tom Atkins, Kevin Tighe, Megan Boone. The film is directed by Patrick Lussier.

Bride Wars was released January 9th, 2009 and stars Kate Hudson, Anne Hathaway, Bryan Greenberg, Chris Pratt, Steve Howey, Candice Bergen, Kristen Johnston, Michael Arden. The film is directed by Gary Winick.

Took my son to see Mall Cop. It was good for a couple chuckles, but by no means a great movie. It is just a movie that folks can take the kids to and not worry about content (rare it seems), so it's a no brainer it made good box office (parents and kids going together 2 for 1 = $$).

I'm still having trouble believing "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" beat "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans" in revenue.....

wtf???mall cop looks extremely stupid and underworld looks dumb too.benjamin button is a masterpiece and more people see it.i also thought defiance would do better.
slumdog millionaire is the most overrated piece of crap.it is gonna win best picture at the oscars and it doesnt come close to deserving it.benjamin button should win best picture and david fincher should win best director.

WTFFFFFFFF. Underworld should rock the socks like the first 2 movies of the series did. and yes I do feel vamp on that one. because if it wasn't for watchmen my page would have been filled with the pics of underworld 3.
hey I didn't even take intrest in paul bart. I actually hated the movie previews and thought it was a wast of time and money. i can't beleive people would still pay money to go see that.
right now I am only taking intrest in Underworld 3 which i'll get to seee soon if I had the chance to get to a theater.
I wanted to go see defiance alot, but i don't think I will after all. I wanna save money to movies coming out next month like friday the 13th and Pink Panther 2 and Coraline and Push.

Well I am a little sad because I really liked underworld and always thought it would break the #1 in the box office as it always did through the first and the second movie. Oh well I wish it would get better in the box office through the weeks to come.

hey people don't forget that paul bart is only 0.8 million away. that is kinda pathetic. LOL.

Whoops, just noticed a typo, I meant to say, "I'm saying that I think saying 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop' is an AMAZING movie might be a little over-the-top, that's all." Forgot to say WHAT I thought was over-the-top. LOLZ!

I do not think it is so much that people do not like vampires than it is the violence. I am with Cell on this one, Mall Cop does not interest me in the least.

    Defiance was awesome!!
I watched it pirated online, and holy crap it still rocked. I give it say, 4.3 out of 5.
Gonna see Taken, and Rise of the Lycans soon.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop was #1 again.... WOW!!! I didn't think it looked "THAT" good!!! LOL! I have no interest!

I finally saw "Defiance" W./Daniel Craig! Good film, not great, but Daniel Craig knocks it out of the field. Great performance! Shows he can do more than play Bond!
    I would give it a C+!

Nothing thrilling comes out next weekend!

I saw a trailer for "New in Town, & it did look like a bomb! Not really funny to me! Not sure about "Taken"!!?? Don't know!??!

Money doesn't mean anything amazing movies like American History X, Requiem For A Dream, and Boy A made barely any money but big steaming piles of crap like Godzilla (1998), The Village, and Fantastic Four made tons at the box office. even really great big budget movies don't always make a lot of money take The Island for example. Underworld was clearly the better movie and it doesn't need money to prove it.

ok and because its pg means more people will flock to it... granted this is the third movie in the underworld series... and by me saying Paul blart was amazing may have been a little over the top but it was very enjoyable movie and its the definition of what movies are all about and that entertainment that everyone can enjoy not everyone loves vampire movies sadly even tho the underworld movies are the best

Plus Paul Blart is rated PG (not PG-13, but just parent guidance suggested) and Underworld is rated R.
