WEEKEND BOX OFFICE
Three new movies entered the box office race last week, MegaMind, Due Date and For Colored Girls, and to nobody's surprise MegaMind ended up saving the day and taking the number one spot at the box office. But with three highly anticipated new films entering the race this weekend, including the alien invasion film Skyline, the runaway train movie Unstoppable and the romantic comedy Morning Glory, will MegaMind be able reign supreme for a second week in a row?
The answer is yes! Holding on to the number one spot for a second week in a row is the new super-hero themed animated family film MegaMind, which stars Will Ferrell (The Other Guys), Tina Fey (Baby Mama), Jonah Hill (Superbad) and Brad Pitt (Troy). While the movie dropped 34.7% from its debut last week, it was added on five screens for a total of 3,949, earning $7,611 on each for weekend total of about $30 million. Now in just two weeks the movie has earned around $89.7 million, which puts it a little closer to earning back its entire $130 million production budget.
Debuting at number two this week is the fifth film from director Tony Scott and actor Denzel Washington (Crimson Tide, Man on Fire, Deja Vu, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3) called Unstoppable. The film is based on the true story of a runaway train in Pennsylvania and also stars Chris Pine (Star Trek), Rosario Dawson (Sin City) and Kevin Dunn (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen). The movie made $7,328 on each of its 3,207 screens for an opening weekend total of $23.5 million, which is not even close to earning back its entire $100 million production cost.
Falling one place from last week to number three is the new comedy from Old School director Todd Phillips, entitled Due Date. The road trip comedy stars an excellent cast of actors including Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man 2), Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover), Juliette Lewis (Natural Born Killers), Michelle Monaghan (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang) and Oscar winners Jamie Foxx (Ray) and Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine). While the movie dropped 52.5% from its debut last week, it was added on ten screens for a total of 3,365, earning $4,615 on each for weekend total of about $15.5 million. Now in just two weeks the movie has earned around $59 million, which puts it very close to earning back its entire $65 million production budget.
Debuting at number four this week is the new alien invasion movie Skyline from directors Greg and Colin Strause (Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem). The film stars Eric Balfour (24), Donald Faison (Scrubs), Scottie Thompson (Star Trek) and David Zayas (Dexter). The movie made $4,055 on each of its 2,808 screens for an opening weekend total of $11.6 million, which is enough to earn back its entire $10 million production cost.
Finally, rounding off the top five this week in its debut is the new romantic comedy from Notting Hill director Roger Michell called Morning Glory. The film revolves around the inner workings of a morning talk show and boasts an all-star cast that includes Rachel McAdams (Sherlock Holmes), Harrison Ford (Raiders Of The Lost Ark), Diane Keaton (The Godfather), Patrick Wilson (Watchmen) and Jeff Goldblum (The Fly). The movie made $3,822 on each of its 2,518 screens for an opening weekend total of $9.6 million. But because the film actually opened on Wednesday, it has earned $12.2 million since it's release, which is still not enough to earn back its entire $40 million production cost.
Continuing to do well in limited release in its debut is the latest film from Oscar winning Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle called 127 Hours. The film is based on the true story of a mountain climber who was forced to cut off his own arm in order to survive. The film stars James Franco (Milk) in the lead role and also features Amber Tamblyn (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2) and Lizzy Caplan (Hot Tub Time Machine). The movie rose 71.0% this week from its debut last week and was shown on 18 additional screens. The film earned $20,591 on each of its 22 screens for a weekend total of $453,000.
Also doing well in limited release on its opening weekend is Jumper director Doug Liman's new film, Fair Game, based on the true story of the CAA spy who's cover was blown by the Bush administration. The political thriller stars Naomi Watts (King Kong) and two-time Oscar winner Sean Penn (Milk, Mystic River). The movie rose 65.7% this week from its debut last week and was shown on 129 additional screens. The film earned $6,166 on each of its 175 screens for a weekend total of $1 million.
Next week will see the opening of two highly anticipated new films in wide release and one in limited release.
First up next week is part one of the long awaited final chapter of the beloved Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1. The film features returning stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Alan Rickman, Ralph Fiennes, Michael Gambon, Maggie Smith, Helena Bonham Carter, Bill Nighy and Rhys Ifans.
Also opening in wide release next week is the new prison break thriller The Next Three Days. The movie stars Russell Crowe, Elizabeth Banks, Olivia Wilde, RZA, Brian Dennehy and Liam Neeson.
Finally, opening in limited release next week is the new independent film Made in Dagenham, which is based on a true story. The movie stars Sally Hawkins, Miranda Richardson, Rosamund Pike, Richard Schiff and Bob Hoskins. So please check back in seven days to see who comes out on top at the box office next week!
MegaMind was released November 5th, 2010 and stars Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, David Cross, Justin Theroux, Ben Stiller, Jessica Schulte. The film is directed by Tom McGrath.

Even though Skyline opened at #4 with 11 million, it's already earned back its budget (10 million). Oh well. I'm glad to see Dreamworks on top again. Need to see Unstoppable :P

Unstoppable was awesome. There isn't much character development but the action is edge of your seat can't sit still. If you want to see a movie that will get your heart racing go see Unstoppable!

I guess 2010 is fast ending
we only got 4 blockbusters left
HP7 , Tron Legacy , Narnia 3 , & Yogi Bear
well its been a great year of movies
But I want HP7 to be the highest billionaire

even if Skyline flopped it only cost 10 million to make. There is no way it could NOT make its money back which in Hollywood terms looks like a win no matter how terrible the reviews are.

wow DreamWorks has a very good year!
all of their films stayed for more than two weeks
but MegaMind is not the real winner because this is not their month!
Because 4 days left the world of Muggles will witness the beginning of the epic war between good and evil wizards!
Harry Potter and The Deathly hallow - Part 1or HP7 is the real king in november or could be in the 2010!

Skyline started off okay but after the first 10 minutes it started falling apart..the ending could have bee WAY better...i personally think they should have ended with the aliens ripping the boyfriend's head as well as his girlfriends, and to sweeten it up rip her stomach out too ...then maybe this movie wouldn't have been so bad :/
But next weekend Harry Potter is gonna OWN the bow office, definitely going to the midnight showing on thursday!!

I wish Morning Glory would do better. It was satisfyingly fun, and it was good to see Ford doing some banter with McAdams. Good acting, simple/fun script.

Um hell no i think Unstoppable shouldve claimed the top spot but at least both are good movies. AND WHAT DID I TELL YOU FOLKS- Skyline was going to be a FLOP

Megamind is awesome. I'm glad to see it at the top again. Skyline was just a bad movie, but it's so bad that it's actually entertaining to watch. So I won't say whether you should see it or not lol
