5) Eagle Eye $7 million

6) Body of Lies $6.8 million

7) Quarantine $6.3 million

8) Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist $3.9 million

9) Sex Drive $3.5 million

10) Nights in Rodanthe $2.6 million

With so many films hitting the marketplace this weekend, a true box office winner was anybody's guess. Well, it looks like the gamers triumphed as they came out in small droves to support the Mark Walberg shoot-em-up Max Payne. This exciting video game adaptation, which was directed by John Moore, racked up $18 million for first place.

In a surprising turn of events, it was Disney's Beverly Hills Chihuahua that picked up the slack in second place. The talking pooch picture managed to outpace several other high profile projects this weekend, nabbing another $11 million in its third week at bat. That brings its cumulative tally to $69 million. With this kind of staying power, it should top out at $100 million easily by mid-November.

The third and forth place spots belonged to two other newcomers this week. Queen Latifah and Dakota Fanning brought their latest drama The Secret Life of Bees in with $11 million for the bronze. And Oliver Stone's seemingly anticipated biopic W. underperformed in fourth with a less than triumphant $10.5 million. George W. Bush is probably grinning about the whole thing right now.

Sex Drive, this week's only other major release, didn't quite attract the teens it was hoping for. Despite it being one of the funniest films of the year, it quickly flopped itself into the number nine position with a mere $3.5 million. Just barely enough to beat out the weepy romance Nights in Rodanthe, which has become a modest hit with a cumulative gross of $36 million after 4 weeks in release.

Next week continues to be a guessing game for box office pundits across the country. A plethora of films are being released, and all of them will attract a slightly different audience. First up, we have the horror workhorse Saw V, but will Jigsaw be any match against the kids of High School Musical 3: Senior Year? And then there is Clint Eastwood's heavy drama The Changeling, along with Collin Farrell ironing babies in Pride and Glory. Who will be the true winner? I guess you'll just have to wait and find out.

That's actually not too susprising, because Max Payne isn't getting the best reviews, so not many people would have seen that. I thought it was only ok, as many others did. An the rest of the movies have already been out for a week or longer.

apparently the opinions are max payne was nothing special.. but your right diaigma, duke nukem, half-life(would be awesome), halo, or even some kind of adaptation of Counter Strike although it would never work, I just love the game.. but either of these, if done right, would rake in TONS of money..

    Don't forget bioshock ;)
STILL WANT MORE NEWS ON THAT!

I've also been playing mass effect recently...i honestly don't see what the fuss is about. There's points in the game that make me think "wow, this is really something" but then there's others where i want to slit my wrists. The gameplay at times is excrutiating and there's technical errors like pausing in the middle of combat to load or save or some sh*t. Some aspects are really quite annoying, but the graphics and unique quality of it and character customization keep it alive, and i think that's the only thing that got it hyped up. I only bring it up because while I don't think it's as great as the hype(i'd give it prob. an 8.7 at this point, but I haven't finished it; I have to beat a big krogan toad-lookin dude after saving dr. t'soni on the artemis tau cluster and it's f*cking hard), I think it would make an AWESOME film, no doubt. The character development, story, and action are all film worthy. I suggest zack snyder to direct it if it gets made(and it will). I know i suggest him a lot, but come on, his style is perfect for it..that is, if he's into doing a sci-fi flick, but i don't think he'd have a problem with it

  12. Diaigma

I think Resident Evil was the best game adaption, and that's not saying much for my film palate. Now, if they ever bring out Duke Nuken, Half-Life, or even Halo, and do it justice, my opinion might change.

Silent Hill was laughable, btw ^_^
    "YOUR...FAITH...BRINGS...DEATH!"

no, no, you're missing the point vis.
    quality means nothing.
its profitability that makes a movie worth while, duh.

jeez people like you who think that a movie should be GOOD, egad you make me sick.

    good movies are for losers.
movies that make money because they appeal to the masses with fluffy bunny bullsh*t, now thats what movies are all about.

My post re-posted: We don't care if it comes out on top, i'm not even doubting that given how much of a fan base it has...we're just saying it's stupid despite how much money it makes

I have two cities close by my town. In one of the cities, the theater is strict, but it's nicer and bigger. But in the other, they let me into r-rated films w/o even asking for i.d. or anything, so i go there for they r-rated ones

It's hysterical that you could be that short-sighted about the box office. Beverly Hills Chihuahua was #1 for two weeks! If that's any indication, then HSM3 has NOTHING to worry about. Besides, on the east coast you need to be 17 to see an 'R' rated movie and I think Saw is losing its appeal.

max payne I waited for way more, what the hell is this, It is like sh*tty for a movie that great, I haven't seen it but planing on seeing it the first time I get the chance.
anyways saw V is surely going to wrip the # 1 next week, but please americans, DON"T GO WATCH HIGH SCHOOL F*CKIN MUSCIAL 3. it is stupid I asure you, SRRY disney, but come on, this is more than stupid. saw is gonna be incredible, so let it get the number one, not only cause he diserves it, but becasue it is a series that shouldn't be beat up by a f*ckin kids show like hsm 3

"Max Payne" Was not a bad film, I just felt like "Max Payne" was just mismarketed! I'm not familiar W./the video game, & the trailer made it out the film was going to be some supernatural thriller, in reality it was more of a Neo-noir, Hard-Boiled Detective story!!

Mark Wahlberg redeemed himself from his last crappy film "The Happening" (2008)!!!

    MY FINAL RATING: B+!!
