5) Watchmen $6 million
6) The Last House on the Left $5.9 million

Nicolas Cage knows a thing or two about dominating the box office. Despite going up against heavyweights like Julia Roberts and the Apatow All-Stars, his latest thriller Knowing managed to open number one this weekend, pulling in an estimated $24.8 million. This is his third straight number one film after both Bangkok Dangerous and National Treasure: Book of Secrets opened at the top of the charts. Too bad his latest film doesn't leave itself open to a sequel.
Paul Rudd and Jason Segel managed to slide into the second place spot with their latest comedy I Love You, Man. The John Hamburg directed laugher pulled in an estimated $18 million. Not bad for a male-centric romantic comedy. Julia Roberts and Clive Owen trailed behind in third place, with there romantic heist Duplicity earning roughly $14.4 million. It seems that Julia Roberts just doesn't have the star power pull she used to carry.
The film with the highest per screen average this week was Valentino: The Last Emperor, which pulled in $20,300 from just one screen. The immigration chase thriller Sin Nombre held the second highest per screen average, taking in $12,900 on each of its six screens for an estimated gross of $77,400.
Will Nicolas Cage be able to reign supreme next week? It seems unlikely, as he will have to battle DreamWorks' Monsters Vs. Aliens, John Cena in 12 Rounds, the scary The Haunting in Connecticut, and Greg Mottola's Superbad follow-up Adventureland.
Knowing was released March 20th, 2009 and stars Nicolas Cage, Chandler Canterbury, Rose Byrne, Lara Robinson, D.G. Maloney, Nadia Townsend, Alan Hopgood, Adrienne Pickering. The film is directed by Alex Proyas.
I Love You, Man was released March 20th, 2009 and stars Paul Rudd, Rashida Jones, Sarah Burns, Greg Levine, Jaime Pressly, Jon Favreau, Jane Curtin, J.K. Simmons. The film is directed by John Hamburg.
Duplicity was released March 20th, 2009 and stars Clive Owen, Julia Roberts, Tom Wilkinson, Paul Giamatti, Dan Daily, Lisa Roberts Gillan, David Shumbris, Rick Worthy. The film is directed by Tony Gilroy.
Race to Witch Mountain was released March 13th, 2009 and stars Dwayne Johnson, AnnaSophia Robb, Alexander Ludwig, Carla Gugino, CiarĂ¡n Hinds, Tom Everett Scott, Chris Marquette, Billy Brown. The film is directed by Andy Fickman.
Watchmen was released March 6th, 2009 and stars Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Patrick Wilson, Carla Gugino, Matt Frewer. The film is directed by Zack Snyder.
Taken was released January 30th, 2009 and stars Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, Leland Orser, Jon Gries, David Warshofsky, Holly Valance, Katie Cassidy, Xander Berkeley. The film is directed by Pierre Morel.
Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail was released February 20th, 2009 and stars Tyler Perry, Derek Luke, Keshia Knight Pulliam, David Mann, Tamela J. Mann, RonReaco Lee, Ion Overman, Vanessa Ferlito. The film is directed by Tyler Perry.

agree wit comic book guy VIS. granted he he owns a dictionary but the fact that he rags and puts down ne 1 who doesent agree with him. which jus shows hes the least mature of us all. il stop now as hes probly got a boner from all this feedback. oh and good retort gambit. as ive read the Watchmen an stil think it wasent that good. but that was partly my fault for holding it in such high aclaim before actualy seeing it. Shame on me.

couldn't agree more, I am not the boss but I can still have my saying about many people not because they liked the movie or they didn't but because of why they liked it and why not. the material in the movie was too deep for many people to understand and I really don't expect from everyone to get out of the theater happy because many people waited for an action movie, not a good remarkable movie. that's my last saying. but if you can tell me you understood it and you didn't like it, like comrade did, then I wont enter the whole maturity thing, because comrade did read the book and understand it(I know it from another argument we had) anyways, my friend I really don't say that anyone is immature for no reason and I have explained it briefly in this comment.

No, gambit, my friend, it still doesn't change the fact that that's someone's opinion and you have to respect it, no matter how it comes out. Your not the boss, remember that, son.

also answering Newkill, yes I don't call a person mature or immature for nothing. i don't call you immature because you had said your veiwing point of the movie. it's just the way you say it that shows your personality as immature or mature.
'nough said.

well technically you can, cause at the same time many people did not think it sucked. in fact many people thought it was good and they are right here on movieweb. also, I agree that much of north america thought it sucked. does that make it suck in my eyes. NOT ONE BIT. the movie gave me what I expected and I have read the novel. that is why I think that it is worth a celebration.
i really am not talking about the world, I am talking about my own vweing point and I considered it a movie very hard to go deep into it, for sure. many people complained about the long hours, the violence and the nudity and never had gotten to see the story.
comrade henson, nothing personal but if you think it sucked I think you should change your avatar.

Well said Newkill any time someone doesn't agree with Agent Vis he has to come out and bash them. Well guess what Watchmen sucked I said others have said it and you can see by the numbers it's putting up mostt of north america thinks it sucks. So I guess we can't all be wrong now can we.

Snyder f*cked it up. Granted, his production was probably the least of all evils at this point, but his film had too many flaws and too little soul for me to even consider it the Watchmen movie. A feeble, off caffeinated attempt at a cerebral masterpiece. Like a 16 year old jacked up on mountain dew and pop tarts trying to explain Machiavelli.

Why can't the guy just think it sucks? Everytime someone says they hate something their IQ or maturity has to be brought into it, which, frankly, has nothing to do with it. I liked Watchmen, but you don't see me calling this guy immature.

I'm surprised Watchmen is that far down. I would have expected a lot more than 6 million.
Sadly, I didn't get to contribute to those numbers last weekend.

Knowing was much better than Duplicity, and I Love You, Man was just ok. Of the top ten Madea is the only one I haven't seen.

ok the knowing had me for about the first 45 min then they brought god into it and the last 25 min totally lost it for me... i heard it had to do with the Scientology religion which i know nothing about but the movie was good till the last minutes of it..... and as for I LOVE U MAN... i was hoping for another forgetting Sarah Marshall which was a bad idea cause that is a movie that is hard to beat but this movie just didn't do it for me.

What is up with these Cage movies making number one when they suck? The bad thing out of this is that he's going to make more dumb sh*t like this. Looks like we've lost our old Nic Cage. No doubt Monsters Vs. Aliens is going to take the crown.

Word VIS. Don't forget, the DVD/Blu Ray will have an HOUR of cut footage. I'm sure that will be even more incredible than the theatrical release.

"Numbers" don't mean sh*t. The moviemaniak's of the world need to realize that a movie shouldn't be based on the money it recieves. Watchmen was made with the fans in mind, so yeah, it stuck to the novel, and how can you call yourself a "comic book guy" and not have read Watchmen? Besides, you're missing my initial point. You like action above all else. Taken was garbage. Bad dialogue and a sh*t ending, but when a superhero movie comes along that wants to focus more on world issues and morality, we can't take it because our attention span is too low...btw, yeah, Watchmen had flaws. Some stuff was cut out that should have made the cut, yes. Carla Gugino was miscast, yes. But Snyder in no way "f*cked it up." Do you realize that the movie was going to be a PG-13 modern day superhero story starring Keanu Reeves before he came along? He saved Watchmen from a worse fate

Agent Vis Just because you have been praising the novel and the movie for months now does not make the movie any better like many others on this site have said the movie was all over the place. Just like the novel that YOU enjoyed so much. But not all of us ran out to buy the novel to read it before watching the movie. The sign of a great book adaptation is that you do not need to read the novel to like the movie. It should be able to stand on it's own not have to be faithfull to the source material... Now get your head out of your ass go get a job at Mcdonalds and for GOD sake stop touching yourself.....

The only one I've seen in the top ten was Taken. It was okay, but should've been more violent. He was too level headed for me to believe. I would've gone ape sh*t ballistic, even more so than he did in the movie.
Going to sit and watch three next weekend... Watchmen, I love you Man, and Last House on the Left. Anyone seen Last House yet?
