BOX OFFICE BEAT DOWN: Iron Man 2 Destroys the Competition with $133 Million

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE

Iron Man 2 takes home $133 Million for the weekend of May 7, 2010 With the summer movie season officially on its way and to nobody's surprise, the most anticipated film of the summer, Iron Man 2, blew up the box office with an astonishing $133 million. The film came in just a little over it's predicted $130 million total and scored the fifth highest grossing opening weekend of all-time, right behind The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 3, The Twilight Saga: New Moon and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, respectively. The film, which is directed by Jon Favreau and stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson, opened on 4,380 screens and earned $30,502 per screen. The film opened last week internationally and had already earned $132 million before this weekend, which combined should make Marvel Studios and Paramount executives very happy having already earned back their purported $200 million production cost and then some in the first two weeks of it's worldwide release. Last week's number one film, A Nightmare On Elm Street dropped an amazing 72.1% in it's second week taking the number two spot on the charts. Director Samuel Bayer's re-imagining of the classic 1984 horror film stars Oscar Award nominee Jackie Earle Haley as the iconic Freddy Krueger and earned only $9.1 million at the box office this weekend. The film was seen on 3,332 screens and earned $2,752 on each, which brings the films total gross to around $48 million in just two weeks, well beyond it's $35 million production cost.

Slipping one spot back from last week to number three is the animated movie that just won't quit, How to Train Your Dragon, which earned another 6.7 million this weekend. The film, which stars Gerard Butler, Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, Craig Ferguson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jonah Hill and Kristen Wiig has now made $201 million in seven weeks on the charts, surpassing it's $165 million production cost. While the film dropped 36.3% and was seen on 423 less screens than the week before, it still managed to earn $2,251 on each of its 3,003 screens. Falling one spot back from last week to the number four position on the charts is the Steve Carell & Tina Fey comedy Date Night, which earned an additional $5.3 million this weekend. The film dropped 30.1% from the previous week and was seen on 359 less screens, earning $1,939 in each of the 2,734 theaters it was shown in. The movie has now earned $80.8 million in just five weeks, surpassing its $55 million production cost. Finally, rounding off the top five this week and falling back one spot from last week is the Jennifer Lopez romantic comedy The Back-Up Plan co-starring Alex O'Loughlin. The film dropped 40.1% from its debut last weekend and earned $1,447 on each of its 3,003 screens for a weekend total of $4.3 million. The film has now grossed around $29.4 million in just three weeks but is still short of earning back it's $35 million production cost.

Doing well this week in limited release are two brand new movies, Mother And Child and Babies. Mother And Child stars Annette Bening, Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and Samuel L. Jackson, and earned $44,400 in its opening weekend. The film was seen on only four screens and managed to earn $11,100 on each screen, however it still has a long way to go if it wants to earn back it's $7 million production cost. Also doing extremely well in limited release in it's opening weekend is the new documentary film, Babies. The film was released on 534 screens, earning $2,949 on each for a total of $1.5 million. Also, continuing to do well in limited release is Please Give, which stars Catherine Keener, Amanda Peet and Oliver Platt. The film, which rose an exceptional 114.2% this week also added 21 new theaters and managed to earn an additional $253,000 in its second week. The film was seen on 26 screens and managed to earn $9,731 on each screen.

Next weekend will see the summer box office race heat up with three new films in wide release and two in limited release. Another highly anticipated summer film, director Ridley Scott's Robin Hood, opens next week. The film stars Oscar winner Russell Crowe as the famous bow & arrow wielding hero, along with fellow Oscar winners Cate Blanchett and William Hurt, and accomplished actors Mark Strong (Kick-Ass) and Danny Huston (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) rounding out the cast. Also in wide release next week are the romantic comedies, Letters to Juliet starring Amanda Seyfried (Dear John) and Just Wright starring former rappers Queen Latifah and Common. Finally, next week in limited release will be the independent film Daddy Longlegs as well as the documentary Best Worst Movie about the making of '1989s Troll 2. So please check back in seven days to see who comes out on top at the box office next week!

Iron Man 2 was released May 7th, 2010 and stars Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke, Samuel L. Jackson, Clark Gregg. The film is directed by Jon Favreau.

A Nightmare on Elm Street was released April 30th, 2010 and stars Jackie Earle Haley, Kyle Gallner, Rooney Mara, Katie Cassidy, Thomas Dekker, Kellan Lutz, Clancy Brown, Connie Britton. The film is directed by Samuel Bayer.

Iron Man 2 will be number 1 again next week also. I don't see Robin Hood breaking 70 million next weekend. Iron Man 2 will probably make about 80 to 90 million.

  8. The Narrator: The Better Man

Whoop! It wasn't something that stayed with me much after I left the theater or after I left my screen (I got a HD bootleg version, but still saw it in the theaters afterwards. Anyways, it was still fun. Robin Hood for the win next week!

Also, wth? Who keep comparing TDK and Avatar? And then this guy throws in IM2?

Iron Man 2 - Pales besides the original.

    My Final Rating: C-

Loud, Over-Blown, train-wreck of a plot ....and Don Cheadle as Lt. Col. James 'Rhodey' Rhodes / War Machine ...he had just about a much charisma as cardboard .... I wish Terrence Howard was not replaced!
