Do-it-all filmmaker Tyler Perry has notched another opening weekend win under his belt. Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All by Myself debuted atop the box office charts with an impressive estimated gross of $24.03 million, securing yet another hit for the filmmaker. The film scored a sizeable $10,656 per-screen average from just 2,255 theaters, despite two other films opening wider than Perry's film this weekend.

Debuting in second place was the animated film 9 with an estimated $10.8 million. The film debuted in far fewer theaters (1,661) but still held strong with a healthy $6,536 per-screen average. The film opened on Wednesday (9-9-09) and the film's cumulative gross stands at $15.2 million for the five-day opening tally. It wasn't clear if this film plans to expand to more theaters in the coming weeks, though. Inglourious Basterds continued its stellar run in third place this weekend with $6.5 million, bringing its domestic total past the $100 million mark with $104.3 million.

Two other films debuted in wide release - wider than both top two films - but the results weren't as promising. Sorority Row and Whiteout finished in a virtual dead-heat in sixth and seventh place with an estimated $5.2 million and $5.1 million grosses respectively. The films both received the highest new-release rollouts of the weekend (2,665 for Sorority Row and 2,745 for Whiteout) but they both faltered with paltry per-screen averages of $1,997 for Sorority Row and $1,858 for Whiteout.

Next week will see several vastly different films vying for the box office crown. The animated film Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Steven Soderbergh's new dramedy The Informant! and Megan Fox's foray into horror Jennifer's Body all open wide next weekend, with the Jennifer Aniston/Aaron Eckhart romantic comedy Love Happens also getting a semi-wide release as well. Make sure to stop back here next week to see which film comes out on top in this crowded weekend.

I didn't see the Tyler Perry one, but 9 was awesome. Sorority Row and Whiteout were both terrible. I like Beckinsale but she couldn't even save this movie.

On stranger tides.... you are dilusional to think 9 wouldve topped teh box office over tyler perry....as for next week the advertising on TV for the cloudy chance of meatballs isnt huge but its all over 3D and IMAX so that could be #1 or Jennifer's Body because of Megan's body lol

I haven't seen Whiteout but a sign of a good movie, if done well, has all those elements. But 9 had a very thin story....everything else was good.

Whiteout was f*cking terrible. Are you kidding me! It cannot decide whether it wants to be a thriller, horror, or drama/suspense and it just ends up being a comedy. So laughably bad. No wonder it was shelved for two years.
