Moviegoers hungry for a little excitement this weekend flocked to see Will Smith in the third reincarnation of I Am Legend. Though not quite legendary, the film's weekend grosses were $76.5 million. This haul is better than any other film's since summer ended a couple of months ago. It must have been Mike Patton's throat-generated vocal effects that drove the crowd into their theater seats. It certainly wasn't the fate of Will's poor dog. Or the misty ending. I'll just say, don't hold your breath waiting for a sequel to this one folks.
The film that fell into second place was also a huge surprise. Alvin and the Chipmunks scrapped in a heaping pile of mullah in the form of $45 million. This is also one of the best first weekend takes seen since the sun went down in September. It made double what The Golden Compass did last week when it debuted in the number one spot with $22 million. This week saw New Line's franchise hopeful falling into the number three spot with just $9 million.
There were surprises all around, as the film with the highest per screen average was Juno in eleventh place with an amazing $1.4 million run. It took in an unheard of $36,000 per screen playing in just forty theaters. Also posting a pretty good per screen average was DreamWorks The Kite Runner, which nabbed an estimated $451,000 playing on just thirty-five screens. Francis Ford Coppolla didn't find the same respect with his return to the box office. His Youth Without Youth culled a lofty $27,800 playing on just six screens. Poor little guy.
Next week ushers in the last of 2007 with Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, P.S. I Love You, Charlie Wilson's War, and Sweeney Todd. Geez, what the heck are you going to spend your money on next time? I can't wait to find out!
I Am Legend was released December 14th, 2007 and stars Will Smith, Alice Braga, Charlie Tahan, Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Willow Smith, Darrell Foster, April Grace, Dash Mihok. The film is directed by Francis Lawrence.
