Box Office Beat Down: Hulk Smash with $54 Million!

Weekend Box Office

1) The Incredible Hulk $54.5 million

2) Kung Fu Panda $34.3 million

3) The Happening $30.5 million

4) You Don't Mess with the Zohan $16.4 million

5) Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull $13.5 million

6) Sex and the City: The Movie $10.1 million

7) Iron Man $5.1 million

8) The Strangers $4 million

9) The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian $3 million

10) What Happens in Vegas $1.7 million

At first tracking low, the hype surrounding the second coming of The Incredible Hulk built itself into such a fervor that the film managed to walk away with the number one spot on this weekend's box office chart. Everyone involved made sure that we all knew this wasn't a sequel to Ang Lee's 2004 Hulk, but a wholly new try at rebuilding a franchise. And that premise worked. Louis Leterrier's film earned an impressive $54.5 million. If it keeps going strong on word of mouth, we just may be witnessing the resurrection of a once thought dead property.

M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening didn't fare quite as well in this, it's debut weekend. The film came in third with $30.5 million. That simply wasn't enough to beat back Jack Black's Kung Fu Panda, which walked away with the number two spot after earning another $34.3 million in its second week of release. The DreamWorks animated film has nabbed a total of $117.9 million total, shaking it into blockbuster status.

Very few limited release films saw the light of day this weekend. Werner Herzog's latest documentary Encounters at the End of the World stumbled into $17,500 playing on just one screen. This put its per screen average in second place just behind the two week old Mongol, which earned another $107,000 playing on five screens. It's per screen average it at $21,400, putting its cumulative grosses at $307,000. The comedy horror show Baghead only managed to pull in $8,900 on two screens.

Next week, The Incredible Hulk and the Kung Fu Panda will be going up against Maxwell Smart and the Get Smart crew, as well as The Love Guru and Kit Kittredge: An American Girl.

The Incredible Hulk was released June 13th, 2008 and stars Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, Tim Roth, William Hurt, Tim Blake Nelson, Ty Burrell, Christina Cabot, Peter Mensah. The film is directed by Louis Leterrier.

I just came from "The Happening"...and what a huge disappointment ....this has to be the 1st true dud of the Summer of 2008 for films!!!

Now I can see why it was booed at Cannes..and it placed #3 at the box office over the weekend. By next weekend it will slip past the #5 spot...and by the end of June it will be gone!!!

Nothing happend..No twist ending....No big plot bang......JUST NOTHING!!!!

Between "The Happening" & "Lady in the Water" M. Night Shyamalan proved after "The Sixth Sense" he was a 1 trick pony!!

Any new M. Night Shyamalan films that come out I will skip them & wait for late night cable!!!

i havent seen it yet, im waiting for this weekend, but heres the review from 'the guardian' news:
"Hulk. Smash!" Yes. Hulk. Smash. Yes. Smash. Big Hulk smash. Smash cars. Buildings. Army tanks. Hulk not just smash. Hulk also go rarrr! Then smash again. Smash important, obviously. Smash Hulk's USP. What Hulk smash most? Hulk smash all hope of interesting time in cinema. Hulk take all effort of cinema, effort getting babysitter, effort finding parking, and Hulk put great green fist right through it. Hulk crush all hopes of entertainment. Hulk in boring film. Film co-written by star. Edward Norton. Norton in it. Norton write it. Norton not need gamma-radiation poisoning to get big head. Thing is: Hulk head weirdly small. Compared with rest of big green body.

this sucks, Sex and the City got more on its opening weekend that Hulk. And what the hulk got wasnt really impressiv, but because of the big let down by the first hulk movie, the new one being number one is very good.

I did the same thing Ed Wood, the manager told me to keep my voice down, because there was a line at the door waiting to see it.
Hulk was playing at our 2nd theater in town, it was awesome. I'm surprised it didn't make more than 54.5.
