I wish Dredd would have done a little bit better, but this is not terrible news... logically speaking, it makes sense that all the films are around the same intake... There were too many huge films released at one time... I blame poor marketing for Dredd's performance...

Dredd and The Raid have very similar basic plots for some unknown reason considering Dredd was finished filming a full month before The Raid went into production as far as films go. Huntsman is spot on about The Raid... Dredd felt better to me on all cylinders, it was very much a cop movie but also very much a dystopian future sci-fi action movie, while at the same time being a character piece.

Dredd wastes no time with unnecessary characters, plot elements, conversations, drama or even action, all that is there is very simple and straight to the point, and what it excels in doing is showcasing the world the characters live in, then showcasing how it truly affects the hirarchy, on both ends of the law... which all is a very significant way to show you just how stoic Dredd, the man, really is.

He is a hero of few words, to him, he is just a guy doing his job, he is a man of the law and his view of it is decidedly black and white which is partly what makes it interesting to see him forced to consider that grey areas do exist. there is minimal character development but that's also true to the nature of the character and the world he lives in, he's like Batman but unapologetic, brutal and willing to use deadly force within the confines of the law. It's an interesting line to walk and it's great that they have in Olivia Thirby a character who presents more of what the audiences mindset might be at the onset, so the shock she feels is something some people might feel.

Overall they did a great job of saying, this is the world Dredd lives in, this is how screwed up things are and why Judges exist. This is why Dredd is necessary but then they sneak in enough talk here and there by other characters to show that Dredd has made somewhat of a name for himself already.

@youngrizo It really did. It established the idea of bought Judges, inferring Dredd's pure view of justice is rare and he's fighting enemies on both sides of the law. It established the benefits of Anderson's mutant abilities as a Judge and how that could be expanded. And that there were many other criminal elements besides Mama's clan. But even if it never does see a sequel, I walked away happy.

@superman81 The Raid has excellent action sequences (some are literally "did he just do that?!"), and a simple plot that comes together by the end. For me it was like Ong Bak (the first one). You can watch it, enjoy its choreography, and say 'eh, whatever' to the plot.

People should really check out Dredd. It's such a great Judge Dredd film and it sets up that universe so well that it can only mean good things if it does well

People, see "End of watch" terrible title for the film, but overall it was ABSOLUTELY amazing. Jake Gyllenhaal's and Michael Pena's best performances to date. I literally teared up in this movie. It was that intense. DO NOT miss it.

Human Centipede movies are trash that shouldn't be given any attention whatsoever.

@ghostman I couldn't ever sit through something like that. Maybe I'm just too squeamish, but that will never be something I voluntarily sit down to watch.

@bawnian-dexeus Instead of this one being 100% medially in-accurate, it will be 100% politically incorrect. which again, is appropriate for it's american setting.

I did not contribute to any of these numbers this weekend, sadly. I thought Dredd would be doing better, seeing as though seemingly a lot of reviews popped up for it on this site. Oh well, I personally am not very interested in it. As for House on the End of the Street, I kind of did want to see, despite it's awfully generic and boring title.

@skywise@bawnian-dexeus I saw another trailer for Sinister while seeing Dredd today. It explained the pagan demon in it and its goal. Intrigued me. Its 100% on Rotten is also hopeful. Perhaps it'll be some old school good horror. Ethan Hawke is underrated.

@bawnian-dexeus It is disheartening that that is what sells. And Hollywood knows it too.So Torture Porn has become a safe Horror venture. I find it all to be in poor taste old chap.

  27. skywise

@bawnian-dexeus Overall, horror is like the bastard child in hollywood. It seems that most studios do not want to take the risks involved (liked they did in the horror heyday). That means we get watered down crap. But I have been annoyed with a lot of what has been Rated R. Lately it seems to be all about the gore and less about the substance. There is a fine line and it takes a great director to get it right. Something that I feel we have not really seen in H-wood as of late.

    9 months agoby @skywiseFlag

  28. Bawnian©-Dexeus

@skywise I guess it depends on the movie as well. Some R rated movies are for adults and others are supposed to be for adults but target teenagers
