Weekend Box Office
1) Hellboy II: The Golden Army $35.8 million
2) Hancock $33 million
3) Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D $20.5 million
4) WALL-E $18.5 million
5) Wanted $11 million
6) Get Smart $7.1 million
7) Meet Dave $5.3 million
8) Kung Fu Panda $4.3 million
9) Kit Kittredge: An American Girl
10) Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull $2.2 million
In a surprising upset, it was Hellboy II: The Golden Army that took the top spot on this weekend's box office chart. With an opening of $35.8 million, which was $12 million better than the first film's debut weekend take, Big Red managed to best Hancock. Will Smith's superhero flick was expected to take top honors, but instead only earned $33 million in second place for its second week of release. Don't cry too hard for Peter Berg's action comedy, though. Since opening on July 1st, the film has raked in an amazing $165 million dollars. Battlefield Earth's entire box office earnings were only $20 million, so you can pretty much count Hancock a blockbuster.
This week's other two major releases didn't fare quite as well as Guillermo Del Toro's sequel. The Brendan Frazer 3D family adventure Journey to the Center of the Earth barely squeaked into third place, right above WALL-E, with a nice fall take of $20.5 million. Too bad it's summer, some people might have considered this one a hit. But it's poor Eddie Murphy that took the biggest fall. His latest comedy Meet Dave cracked at number seven with just $5.3 million, making it one of the biggest bombs of recent months. No wonder Murphy has publicly started talking about retiring. Sad thing is, I hear the film isn't half bad. Maybe it will find a second life on home video.
As for the smaller independent scene, an astonishing five films were released in conjunction with each other. And none of them managed to earn a top per screen average that beat the bigger guys. Garden Party made the most noise with $11,050 on seven screens. Poor old Harold grabbed a quick and cool $10,300 on just three screens. August coughed up a small take of $6,500 on one screen, while Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired managed a less than stellar $5,500 on 1 screen. The film Death Defying Acts earned the tiny sum of $3,400 on 2 screens.
You will see the box office numbers of both Hellboy II: The Golden Army and Hancock fall dramatically next weekend as the biggest film of the summer hits, and it is called The Dark Knight. No one will be able to beat this bad boy for some time to come, so get ready to say hello to it for the next couple of weeks, as it will surely be residing in that top position at least until August.
Hellboy II: The Golden Army was released July 11th, 2008 and stars Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Doug Jones, John Alexander, James Dodd, Seth MacFarlane, Luke Goss, Anna Walton. The film is directed by Guillermo del Toro.

"Journey to the Center of the Earth" came in third, which is understandable by the limiting 3-D theaters; but still, just looking at the numbers, you know those theaters were packed.

Yeah, I'll bet. I really don't care either way. I know I am 22, do not care whether or not you believe it. I know I teach at Pinelands Regional School District and I know with 100% certainty that I am a homosexual. And as for, as you so perversely put it, "anal f*cking," no different than if you had done it with your wife. (FYI, I do not take it, I give it).

No, that is me you jackass. Just because I take care of myself and do not let myself go to sh*t like the average American, does not mean it cannot be me. I modeled throughout college and that pic is from 2006. I was 20 then. At least I can have my face as my avatar unlike you. You're probably exactly like I am picturing. An overweight balding man in his 40's.

But you think I am insulted from you saying, "well ur gay." Would you be insulted if someone called you straight? Not in the least. I accept the fact that I am gay. Not ashamed and so whenever you say it I can just take it as a compliment.

Nope, doesn't interest me in the least. Wanna know why? Cuz at the end of the day, u may have more money than i do, u may have a good job, but i have something u don't...boners for girls. Whatever comeback u throw at me, i can say "Well, ur gay" and i wouldn't even be lying. Those are the best comebacks. When u can insult somebody by actually telling the truth. Now that i've won, i think this has gone on long enough. See ya on the flip side, homo homey.

Oh and The Visionary, I am 22 and teach high school English. So now that you know that here's something else that may be of interest, I am pretty wealthy. Actually rich is the best term to define my lifestyle. Sure it was largely inherited from my grandfather, but money is money. And I just laugh at your rhetorical statements about me "crying like a girl." Ha okay. Like this is my life or something. To sit on MovieWeb and comment all the time. I do it in my spare time. Sure I was wrong about Wanted, but so were the analysts. No one thought it would perform as well as it did. I don't care though. I am not contributing a dime to the film.

Your a f*cking jackass.. "and if you vote for Obama, vote for his V.P. because since Barrack Obama is black, he's gonna get assassinated". Same sh*t, and yes you are a f*cking *sshole and probably does take pride in being gay. As you commented on a dragon ball z pic, you were c*mming in your pants when you saw Goku. And it maybe i will go ahead and celebrate your defeat, but it'll be too easy.

I hope when you vote this election you are really voting for McCain's vice president because thats who will be leading our country once McCain dies in office. I may be a misanthropic prick, but I love myself that much to admit it. Yes, I am an *sshole and I take a tremendous amount of pride in that. I can jot down whatever the hell I think as well for The Dark Knight's opening. And I cannot wait to see the results. What's going to happen if you are right? Are you going to come on here and go, "Oh HA HA HA I told you so Moviemaniack1993! I told you so!" Because I will just shrug it off. Could honestly care less. I am not seeing a dime of the money and neither are you.

U "faced facts" bout wanted and u were wrong bout that. And who the f*ck's talking bout midnite showings? Oh, that's right, u are. People are gonna see this movie, midnite or not. They'll prolly even call in sick to thier "6:00 jobs."
And on the contrary, people DO care what i have to say cuz they agree with me and not u. Everyone on here disagrees with u, and ur home crying ur eyes out because of it, like a pissy lil girl. This 15 year old punk gets honor roll and is gonna make somethin of himself while u buttf*ck a homeless person and fantasize its zac efron
Bout my avatar: changing my avatar whenever a new image or poster comes out that i like isn't unusual. It shows i have a wide tasted in films...and not crappy films like u. People change thier avatars whenever a new TDK pic arrives, so bitch bout that like i do. At least i don't put a pic of myself up as my avatar in the off chance that some other gay movie geek will come on and "discover" you so u can move to california and get hitched. U ain't as pretty as u think u are, hot shot, 'kay?

yeah and what do you have moviemaniac, you flamer pic that you probably put on your myspace. Shut the f*ck up already box office guru piece of sh*t f*g, and i do believe it will break Spider-man three's sales of 151 million dollars, being said that more teens and young adults are being attracted to the movie and even midnight showings are selling out in various time slots and are even creating 6:00 am time slots to meet demands. *sshole.

Moviemaniack1993
Have you personally asked all the ticket buyers or taken a poll to see whether or not they are just fanboys? No, so shut your face and face facts. Regular people will see it when they get around to it. Not a midnight showing. I am at the movies every week so a midnight showing is a must for me (as I am a huge Batman fanatic). But the normal joe schmoe has a job to wake up and get to at 6 a.m. The movie will make a lot, but Spider-Man 3's pre sales were fewer because families do not go to midnight showings.

Phatlightning ...."Journey to the Center of the Earth" was not bad...it was fun...but the main reason to see it is for the 3-D....Sometimes you have to be more open-minded to films! I like Brendan Fraser as an actor. He is not bad in some of his films!
The only thought that went through my mind watching "Journey to the Center of the Earth" was........"Look, it's Rick O'Connell ("The Mummy")taking a Journey through the center of the earth!

The Visionary, instead of being a 15 year old punk kid who changes his avatar to every new poster that MovieWeb unveils, try putting up an avatar with some significance and self worth. Maybe no one cares what YOU have to say.

Highly doubtful it will break Spider-Man 3's record. There is far too much competition. Sure pre sale tickets are surpassing, but it is only fanboys. Families and women will not flock to Dark Knight. They will either see Mamma Mia! or Space Chimps or whatever else is playing.I will say $90-$100 million. I hope it surpasses Spider-Man 3, but it will not. Although I wouldn't be surprised if it did wind up with around $130 million.

I actually think 125 to 135 million is a safe call Ringwraither. You're right on the mark... but I have this feeling Spiderman 3's opening of 151 million MAY be in jeopardy.

Eddie Murphy is suferring from Chevy Chase syndrome, and Im glad his movie bombed. The good thing about Hellboy 2 is that it did surpass the original's weekend opening. I expect The Dark Knight at #1 next week with way over 100 million. I'd say 135 million for The Dark Knight!! :) Hey it passed Spider-Man 3 in ticket sales...so who knows! :D

I didn't care for the "Journey" movie's trailer. It was full of CGI!!!!!!!! Even the dinosaur looked fake, and that's sad considering how well ILM could do that, IF they didn't do it that is. But the worst thing is that the whole film is compressed into a mere 95 minutes. Plus it's just action scene after action scene with no clear plot in sight. I'll be definitely be skipping that, along with "Meet Dave," since I typically don't see comedies in theaters #1, #2 I don't much care for Eddie Murphy's films lately, and #3, given rising gasoline & ticket prices, I'll only go to the theater for films that really need to be seen on the big screen to be fully appreciated, like "Indiana Jones," "The Dark Knight," HellBoy II," or "WALL*E." (Pixar films being SO much cooler on the big screen).
