BOX OFFICE BEAT DOWN: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Conjures Up $79.4 Million for First Place.

Weekend Box Office:

1) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince $79.4 million
2) Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs $17.7 million
3) Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen $13.7 million
4) Bruno $8.3 million
5) The Hangover $8.3 million
6) The Proposal $8.2 million
7) Public Enemies $7.5 million
8) Up $3.1 million
9) My Sister's Keeper $2.8 million
10) I Love You, Beth Cooper $2.6 million

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince dominated the mid-July box office, bringing in an estimated $159.6 million since opening on Wednesday. Over the course of the weekend, the film brought in $79.4 million, but failed to break any single record, most of which are now owned by that giant robot film Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. J.K. Rowling's sixth book still proved to be quite popular on the big screen, as fans secured its place as the 2nd biggest five-day opening for a movie that debuted on a Wednesday. Strong word of mouth will more than likely keep this highly praised sequel afloat through most of August.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs stayed in second place this weekend, bringing in another $17.1 million. That brings its cumulative grosses up to $152 million. Pretty hefty, though still not enough to beat its previous two entries in overall earnings. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is still going strong in its fourth week of release. Earning $13.7 million for third place, the film has now earned $363 million domestically, and $746.9 million worldwide. That still only makes it the 13th highest grossing film of all-time, so it has some distance to go before it's at the top of the cinematic dog pile.

(500) Days of Summer opened on the arthouse scene to the tune of $838,000, placing it at number twelve on the charts while giving it the highest per screen average of the weekend. Playing on 27 screens, this romantic comedy starring Joseph Gordon Levitt and Zooey Deschanel took in $31,037 at each of its locations.

Next weekend is a mixed bag of genre films as Disney's kiddy flick G-Force opens against the R rated comedy The Ugly Truth and the horrific thriller Orphan. Its tough to say who'll come out on top, as all of these new releases have to contend with Comic-Con 2009.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was released July 15th, 2009 and stars Daniel Radcliffe, Michael Gambon, Dave Legeno, Elarica Gallacher, Jim Broadbent, Geraldine Somerville, Bonnie Wright, Julie Walters. The film is directed by David Yates.

Up was released May 29th, 2009 and stars Edward Asner, Christopher Plummer, Jordan Nagai, Bob Peterson, Delroy Lindo, Jerome Ranft, John Ratzenberger, David Kaye. The film is directed by Pete Docter, Bob Peterson.

G-Force was released July 24th, 2009 and stars Bill Nighy, Sam Rockwell, Will Arnett, Jon Favreau, Zach Galifianakis, Nicolas Cage, Kelli Garner, Penélope Cruz. The film is directed by Hoyt Yeatman.

The Ugly Truth was released July 24th, 2009 and stars Katherine Heigl, Gerard Butler, Bree Turner, Eric Winter, Nick Searcy, Jesse D. Goins, Cheryl Hines, John Michael Higgins. The film is directed by Robert Luketic.

Orphan was released July 24th, 2009 and stars Vera Farmiga, Peter Sarsgaard, Isabelle Fuhrman, CCH Pounder, Jimmy Bennett, Margo Martindale, Karel Roden, Aryana Engineer. The film is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra.

I was merely speaking of "best movie of 09" even though it kinda belongs to Star Trek (in my opinion)

Chad and CBF... you really think HP6 will beat out Tranformers 2 for 2009 honors? Potter made 159 million in five days... Transformers 2 made 200 million its first five days. What will help Potter the next few weeks will be the lack of competition. I think devon28 is nuts saying that G-FORCE will beat out HARRY POTTER for the number one spot next week.... BUT.... its not gonna be easy overtaking Transformers 2 for the overall 2009 movie. Transformers is going to easily hit 400 million and be in the top 10 all time money making movies. I don't think Harry Potter will accomplish that. None of the others have. So I doubt this one will.

    Prediction: Transformers 2 ($418 million)... HP6 ($350 million)

mikehd, I can name at least 6 flaws/observations that make it way different that its original. I really don't want to repeat this stuff on here since I already did that on another topic when the movie was out. I like the movie mind you, but there was a lot of noticable flaws throughout that just picked away at my brain and bothered me after the movie was over. Graphics were amazing though of course.

Slysnide I agree with your comment regarding the extra scenes to DVD, that is, hoping they were filmed and kept on the cutting room floor. I know I felt disappointed that Hermoine as a character didn't have any growth or character development as far as her powers being a witch. Moreover, "the brightest witch of her age," in which we all know that she is going to be a quite powerful witch in the last film helping Harry in the final battle against Voldemort and the Death Eaters. And I haven't even read any of the books but I know they left out all the Hogwarts classes this time, only showing Potions class with Slughorn, and no Defense Against the Dark Arts w/ Snape or the nonverbal magic or 6th year students learning to Disapparate.

I still think it will be the 2009 Movie of the Year.

to me transformers revenge of the fallen was the best movie of 2009 i didn't have any flaws i work at about 6 different movie theatre 's and the 2 movies that people are excited about the most when they come out is hang over and transformers 2 few of you would be surprised me and my co workers always ask people what they thought of the movie the other that left people talking was star trek young people even loved it from ages 15 to 25 alot them were saying they didn't even like star trek before this 1 it's a reason why transformers 2 has made 363 million in the us inunder 25 days and 389 million over seas

wow, "Up" is the oldest of these flicks in the beatdown list and it's still going strong considering it's been out for nearly 2 months amongst other summer blockbusters no less.

If HP6 flails after the first week, I won't be surprised, and am actually hoping it will fail fiscally so David Yates could get motivated to include all the deleted scenes in the movie version on dvd, like a director's cut or what have you, assuming of course that data actually pertaining to the book's point & plot is among them.

This serves as a lesson to those who crown movies as movies of the year with the full knowledge that Harry Pothead will be awaiting release. HP has become many directors' nightmare, few can compare

who wouldve thought Warner Bros would have two huge success in the summer with HP6 and Hangover, WB loves to sit back year after year, raking in the top movies....but next year all i saw was a movie called Inception so i guess they dont have anything too big until HP7 in November 2010

and who determines movie of the year for 2009? is it purely on box office domestically or worldwide? i think domestically it will be ROTF and worldwide could be HP6

no movie thats scheduled for release will hit $200 million, 2012 wont do it, GI Joe might, just might scratch at the door, Christmas carol will not....Avatar needs to do advertising as soon as possible, a small lil teaser perhaps, with a background visual and the name lol the look of the landscape will have ppl sayin wow

"Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" is going to be on the top of 2009's box office. I don't think that any movie waiting for release in this year will bring HP6 down. Maybe "2012"...but naah. "G.I.Joe"...haha lol. "Gamer"...might be hit but not very popular. "A Cristmas Carol"...hmmm...just maybe. "Avatar"....very posible but not very popular in the moment. What do you think?

CBF, I think it's because it has positive word of mouth. I think Star Trek actually had more people liking it than HP so that's kinda weird. Transformers 2 had too many flaws so that's why it won't be #1 movie of '09. The best movies I've seen thus far have been The Hangover, Star Trek, and this movie (HP).

    Dude...

WOW. Harry Potter may be Movie of the Year. How did that happen? It is a good movie. But I figured either Star Trek or Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen would have filled that spot, but HP6 is giving those films a run for their money...literally. Again: WOW.
