Box Office Beat Down: Hancock Takes 4Th of July Weekend with $66 Million

Weekend Box Office

1) Hancock $66 million

2) Wall-E $33 million

3) Wanted $20 million

4) Get Smart $11 million

5) Kung Fu Panda $7.5 million

6) The Incredible Hulk $4.9 million

7) Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull $3.9 million

8) Kit Kittredge: An American Girl $3.6 million

9) Sex and the City: The Movie $2.3 million

10) You Don't Mess with the Zohan $2 million

Will Smith stepped it up and reclaimed his 4th of July weekend by bringing in $66 million with the superhero epic Hancock. This is his highest grossing holiday weekend ever, as well as the third highest grossing 4th of July film of all time. Since opening on Tuesday, the Peter Berg directed Hancock has pulled in an estimated $107 million, quick kicking it into blockbuster status simply on Smith's star power alone.

Coming in at second place was the Disney/Pixar animated sci-fi comedy adventure Wall-E. The film, directed by Finding Nemo's Andrew Stanton, drew in close to $33 million during its second week of release. So far, the film has earned an estimated $128 million. Wanted, also in its second week of release, continued to amaze audiences, pulling in another $20.6 million. So far, it has earned an accumulated gross of $90.7 million, making it one of the bigger surprises of the summer so far.

On the independent front, Jonathan Levine's second directorial effort The Wackness opened on 6 screens, pulling in $145,000. This gave it a per screen average of $24,166, besting Hancock, whose per screen average was locked at $16,645. Also in limited release was the Hunter S. Thomson documentary Gonzo. It pulled in $190,000 on 26 screens across the country.

Will Hancock be able to survive in the number one spot yet again next week? It's highly doubtful as word of mouth has been poor. And the fact that another highly anticipated comic book adaptation by the name of Hellboy II: The Golden Army is debuting doesn't help matters either. Also opening against it are Brendan Fraser's Journey to the Center of the Earth and Eddie Murphy in Eddie Murphy in Meet Dave (that's not a typo!). It should be a fun three-way battle, and I bet ol' Big Red comes out on top.

Hancock was released July 1st, 2008 and stars Will Smith, Charlize Theron, Jason Bateman, Jae Head, Eddie Marsan, David Mattey, Maetrix Fitten, Thomas Lennon. The film is directed by Peter Berg.

    Next Week's Top 5:

    1.Hellboy 2
2.Journey to the Center of the Earth
    3.Hanc*ck
    4.Wall-E
    5.Meet Dave

I really hope Meet Dave takes in less than 20 mil because Murphy hasnt done one good comedy since the first Nutty Professor. He's suffering from Chevy Chase syndrome!

I think 115 - 125 million for an opening weekend sounds about right Nyfresh. Batman Begins opened with only 48 million so the Dark Knight should EASILY surpass that. It should surpass Begins' 5 day total too. Batman Begins opened on a Wednesday and even if you add the Wed and Thurs totals to its first weekend, it only adds up to about 72 million. I also think the Dark Knight will be steady for about 4 to 5 weeks due to word of mouth. Kind of like Pirates 2 a couple of years ago.

THINK ABOUT IT: This is the kind of buzz that Pirates 2, Shrek 2, and Spiderman 2 all had. And all 3 of those movies are in the all-time top 10 grossing films. (Pirates 2 - 423 million, Shrek 2 - 437 million, and Spiderman 2 - 373 million). Judging by the fact that Indy 4 will peak around 325 million... I REALLY feel Dark Knight will surpass that.

Besides Moviemaniack1993... were'nt you the one saying that Wanted would place 3rd or 4th its opening weekend cause it was crap while many others (including me) flat out said it would be #2? Who was right there? Well... with all due respect.. Dark Knight WILL be #1 at the end of the summer. Bank on it.

Seeing Hanc*ck get a record-breaking 4th of July weekend doesn't surprise me, wrote a few weeks ago that it could be the surprise 'sleeper' hit of the summer. However, with the hype and great early reviews TDK got, it will be a major surprise if it isn't the highest grossing film this year. That's saying something with the high calibre films that have been released so far this year, with some more big-name films yet to come.

dark knight is gonna have the biggest opening weekend of the year for sure.....batman begins may not have had a huge opening but the reason for that was the damage done to the franchise by the awful batman n robin.....people all around the world are dieing to see the dark knight....it will not only be seen by the fans of the comic, but also some new fans who loved batman begins....

Even little kids aren't gonna wanna see space chimps over batman, and w/ the way parents are nowadays, they'll let thier lil 3 year old see the dark knight. Mama mia will bomb, and won't even be a blip on neone's radar. How's that for an "intellectual comeback"...bitch. I actually agree w/ cell for a change.

Well "Rolling Stone" Magazine July 10-24, 2008
    Issue 1056 stated:

    "PREPARE TO BE WOWED"
Christian Bale and the late Heath Ledger lift Batman to a shocking new level witha jolt of dark magic.

They give "The Dark Knight" 3 1/2 stars!

    The opening Review states:
HEADS UP: A thundebolt is about to rip into the blanket of bland we call summer movies!

So far the reviews are good!

Fair enough moviemaniack1993... you bring in alot of very good points, but as far as the number one movie of the year? Well lets just agree to disagree.

And cell... you're right about never counting out the fan base. Batman has fans that our young, middle aged, AND old. Batman is Batman. And i guarantee that if this movie is as good as all the hype (which i've heard it is from pre-screening), many die hard fans are going to see this movie multiple times... boosting its chances to surpass Indy.

Don't get me wrong. I love the Indiana Jones character and I really liked Iron Man... I just have to disagree with Moviemaniack1993 about Batman failing to be #1 for the year. But I still respect his opinion because of his very thorough and rational analysis.

I never was a Heath Ledger fan Moviemaniack1993...but to say Heath Ledger was for the teenage crowd is a strange statement..true he did a film like "10 Things I Hate About You", but alot of his later films went to a much older crowed I.E. 'Ned Kelly', "The Brothers Grimm"...but it was "Brokeback Mountain" (I hated the film!) that put him into a new light...other films he did were not that successful, but it showed he could act like "Candy" & "I'm Not There"!

Heath WAS an up and coming actor....before his passing he had 18 films to his credit...19 counting " Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus"!

& what is W/."The senior citizens who contributed to Indy's success"...statement..??

There are certain films W./a huge fan base! "Inday", "Star Trek" & "Batman" are some examples! So never count out the fans! They can make or break a film!

"Dark Knight" will surly cross the 100 million mark, & I'm almost sure that it will follow right behind "Iron Man" & "Indy 4" to cross the $300-Million Mark!

But of course "Iron Man" was the first film To Cross $300-Million Mark!
& there was also "Horton Hears a Who!" which crossed the $100 million mark this year as well!

and according to Variety "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" as already topped the $300 million mark at the domestic box office as of 06/30/2008!

"Crystal Skull" is only the second film of 2008 to reach $300 million after "Iron Man."

Thank you moviebuff123. I like that someone on here is actually an intellectual and can retaliate with a real thought out response and not some nonsensical comeback smart remark. Although I am still going to have to disagree with the comment about it being the top grosser of the year. I do not think it will be. Indiana Jones has a far wider audience than this film will. The senior citizens who contributed to Indy's success will ultimately seek other films to see. And this is NOT children's movie. So families will seek other films as well.

maniak1993... I agree with some of your comments... BUT not all of them.

AGREE with: the fact that the Dark Knight is being released rather late in the summer. All other Batman movies have been released in June. Also, the most ANY Batman movie has grossed is Tim Burton's version in 1989 with 251 million (Batman Begins couldn't even surpass it with 205 million), so being #1 movie of the year may be far fetched. HOWEVER...

DISAGREE with: you are wrong about Heath Leadger only known by the teenage and young adult crowd. I'm 43 years old and many of my friends my age agree that this guy was a talent lost. The guy IS known throughout many age groups. THE DARK KNIGHT will be the biggest grossing film of the year with about 340 to 350 million. It is the biggest anticipated film since the first Batman of '89. It will easily surpass it and will just squeak by Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skulls. ALTHOUGH...

NOT SURE OF: can't say it will surpass Spidey 3's first weekend total of 151 million. I'm a little skeptical about that.... BUT IF IT DOES... it IS guaranteed to the #1 movie of the summer.

While I understand his "last" performance defensive statement, Heath was just an up and coming actor with his first real breakthrough role being Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain. I honestly do not believe that he had that big of a following as an actor to have that large of an impact on a film. Like I said, the movie will make LOADS of money, but Heath's death is not the largest factor as to why it will. I mean, I could see that statement being an argument for Jack Nicholson if he had died after The Departed, or Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia! or Adam Sandler, or maybe even Will Ferrell. But Heath is only known through the teenage and young adult crowd (i.e. those who read People Weekly and the Cosmo magazines).

I think hanc*ck might be number one again because the general public(the people who goes to movie forums) actually loved the film and the thing is hellboy might get number one but who knows because the first film did not play that great among the general public. I hope Batman does beat out spidey 3 but I doubt it but then again pirates 2 came out around this time and it beat spidey 1 record so who knows lol

"The Dark Knight" will be be #1 for 1st weekend..."Mabey" also for the 2nd Weeknd too!

...and I believe it will cross the "Over" the $100 million mark...the biggest factor of the film is to see Heath Ledger's "Last" performance!

  17. Moviemaniack1993

The Visionary, I will be lined up to see The Dark Knight as well, however, I do not think it will have the huge numbers most anticipate. Some are saying that it will debut higher than Spider-Man 3 and that is not going to happen. Not for a July release. Spider-Man 3 kicked off the summer season last year and had virtually no other competition. Dark Knight has huge holdovers as well as Mamma Mia! and Space Chimps. All polar opposite films. It will be the most interesting week to date this year. Dark Knight will definitely be #1, but competition as well as the dark subject material of the film are going to cap it off at around $90-100 million for the first 3 days. And Indiana Jones pretty much has the tile for the top grosser of the year pretty much wrapped up.

    4 years agoby @moviemaniack1993Flag

  18. MovieBuff

Totally agree with Visionary. Hanc*ck will fall to #3 next weekend with Hell Boy at #1 and Journey at #2. Meet Dave will probably debut at #5 behind Hanc*ck and Wall-E. Hell... even Wanted might keep it from debuting in the top five.

I skipped "Hanc*ck" becuase mainly (As a film buff this is bad!) because of all the bad word of mouth from friends, co-workers and reviews!!

I went to see the film "Mongol" instead! ("Mongol" is the story that recounts the early life of Genghis Khan!)

Can't wait to see "Journey to the Center of the Earth"!!! Wish it opened over the weekend in addition to ""Hanc*ck"!

Anyone couldv'e predicted this, even with the reviews. It had no competition. Hellboy 2 will prolly take the top spot next weekend, even w/ journey being released. I doubt people will skip del toro for a cheesy 3-D movie starring Fraser as, yet again, an achaeologist. Meet Dave will surely bomb, and i doubt it will even make #3 behind hellboy and journey. Then after that, the dark knight will become the highest grossing movie of the year. Course, that's just a VISION :)
