Get Smart soared past studio expectations this weekend, earning $39.1 million dollars for that first place spot. Some experts claim that the last minute push of advertising featuring Dwayne Johnson pulled in a much needed older, multi-cultural demographic. If the film continues to stay strong in the next few weeks, we may be seeing the start of a brand new (yet very old) franchise.
It was a brawl for that coveted second place spot, and the fight was between two older films that have been out for a while now. Last week's number one gunner The Incredible Hulk couldn't quite keep up with the three week old Kung Fu Panda. DreamWorks' animated karate epic, which stars the voices of Jack Black and Dustin Hoffman, held onto its number two spot with $21.7 million, putting its cumulative grosses at $155 million. The Incredible Hulk was close on the heels of its CGI companion, taking in $21.5 million. The Marvel comic adaptation is closing in on the hundred million dollar mark, having earned a total of $96.4 million thus far.
Paramount's The Love Guru failed to muster up much audience interest. It debuted in the number four position with a very weak $14 million. The surprise of the weekend was actually Kit Kittredge: An American Girl. The film opened in limited release on five screens across the country, taking in an amazing $223,000. That gives it the highest per screen average with $44,600 for each of its locations. That's compared to Get Smart's per screen average of $10,011. And Werner Herzog's Encounters at the End of the World continues to do very well playing on just one screen. It took in $17,600, giving it the second highest per screen average.
Will Get Smart stay smart for two weeks in a row? Will Kung Fu Panda manage to hold onto its second place position for a fourth week? Those are tough questions to answer as Pixar's WALL-E opens next weekend alongside the Angelina Jolie action-adventure Wanted, which is hands-down the funnest movie of the summer. Guaranteed.
Get Smart was released June 20th, 2008 and stars Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, Dwayne Johnson, Alan Arkin, Terence Stamp, Terry Crews, David Koechner, James Caan. The film is directed by Peter Segal.

I agree with Moviemaniac you have 2 pg movies (Wall-E and Kung Fu) plus you have Get Smart with 39 mil and The Hulk taking up most of the moviegoers...Wanted is another Speed Racer and Guru up and coming. And it is one of 2 "R" films and the fact that it looks like it jumps the shark too many times...works against it!

Wanted will place 3rd or 4th next weekend. It will not nab the second spot. Reason being it looks friggin God awful and WAY too unrealistic, and the R rating is going to REALLY restrict it. I think it will be another summer bomb.

"Get Smart:...Very Cool that it's at #1......I saw "Get Smart".......It was ok...it worked in some parts....other parts it failed...My Rating: C+!
Nice to see that "The Love Guru" bombed & that the "The Happening" fell to #5...Sad it still made money...I guess enough people out there failed to understand the film was a sh*t fest!
"WALL-E" will be at #1 next weekend...followed by "Wanted"!
Most of the reviews so far about "Wanted" have been favorable!
So next weekend I will see both "Wanted" & "WALL-E"!
Still a loooong way before "The Dark Knight"!

saw Get Smart and it is funny. A sequel is probable. I just didn't think Hulk would fall so much. Thought it would be #2. Hmmm... Kung Fu Panda sure is hanging tough.
