It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas. It's also beginning to look a lot like last weekend at the box office. Only this week, numbers were about half of what they were over the holiday. Enchanted stayed in the first place position for the second straight week in a row. It topped out at $17 million, bringing it's cumulative gross to $70.6 million. This is a big end of the year hit for Disney, and they may just rule the end of the year box office when National Treasure: Book of Secrets opens in a couple of weeks. That movie already has hit written all over it. This is a good time to be a family friendly film.
This Christmas knows that all too well. It came in second place for the second straight week in a row, bringing in $8.4 million. While this is a little less than half of what Enchanted made, it must be noted that This Christmas only opened in about half as many theaters. So far, the film has pulled in a tidy sum of $36 million, making it a modest hit.
This week's only new release was the Jessica Alba thriller Awake. With almost no promotional push whatsoever, the film still managed to grab $6 million. This dropped the film into fourth place. Two highly touted independent films also opened this weekend. The Savages, starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman, earned $153,000 playing on just four screens. Oscar hopeful The Diving Bell and the Butterfly opened on three screens and took in an estimated $75,300.
This was a particularly slow weekend, coming off of the holiday. Next week should liven up a bit. We have the highly anticipated Juno opening, as well as New Line's behemoth blockbuster The Golden Compass. Plenty of independent films will be rolling in as well. Revolver, Atonement, The Amateurs, and Grace is Gone will all see limited release.
Enchanted was released November 21st, 2007. The film is directed by Kevin Lima.
