BOX OFFICE BEAT DOWN: Eagle Eye Soars to the Top with $29.2 Million

Weekend Box Office:

1) Eagle Eye $29.2 million
2) Nights in Rodanthe $13.5 million
3) Lakeview Terrace $7 million
4) Fireproof $6.5 million
5) Burn After Reading $6.1 million
6) Igor $5.5 million
7) Righteous Kill $3.8 million
8) My Best Friend's Girl $3.8 million
9) Miracle at St. Anna $3.5 million
10) Tyler Perry's the Family That Preys $3.1 million

Some people may be suffering from Shai LaBeouf fatigue, as his latest thriller didn’t quite meet its expected quotient. While Eagle Eye soared into the number one spot with $10 million over its competitors, the film only racked in $29.2 million. While this is better than Disturbia’s $22 million opening take, analysts were wrong in thinking that Shai and director D.J. Caruso’s second collaboration together would reach the $40 million mark. Hopefully strong work of mouth will give it the same kind of legs that Disturbia had.

Weeping its way into second place was the third onscreen coupling of Richard Gere and Diane Lane. Nights in Rodanthe, based on a Nicolas Sparks novel, cleared $13.5 million in ticket sales. This seemed on track with the last Sparks adaptation The Notebook, which made a close $13.4 million on its opening weekend.

The faith based Fireproof managed to do all right for itself. Playing in only 839 theaters, Kirk Cameron’s latest drama took in $6.5 million for a fourth place spot on the charts. Spike Lee’s latest drama, Miracle at St. Anna, didn’t do quite as well. It fared poorly, earning $3.5 million on 1,185 screens, placing it at number nine for the weekend. The only other major release was Choke, an adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk’s popular novel starring Sam Rockwell. It nabbed $1.3 million for the number fourteen spot playing in just 435 theaters. Playing in 425 theaters, Neil Burger’s adult road trip film The Lucky Ones took in a less than stellar $208,000.

Next week will see the release of Walt Disney’s Beverly Hills Chihuahua, which analysts think will break some fall box office records. Opening against it are the political spoof An American Carol, the drama Flash of Genius, the Simon Pegg comedy How to Lose Friends and Alienate People, and Michael Cera in Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist.

Eagle Eye was released September 26th, 2008 and stars Shia LaBeouf, Michelle Monaghan, Rosario Dawson, Michael Chiklis, Anthony Mackie, Ethan Embry, Billy Bob Thornton, Anthony Azizi. The film is directed by D.J. Caruso.

Nights in Rodanthe was released September 26th, 2008 and stars Diane Lane, Richard Gere, Christopher Meloni, Viola Davis, Becky Ann Baker, Scott Glenn, Linda Molloy, Pablo Schreiber. The film is directed by George C. Wolfe.

No pole Phat, but I did talk to the people around me about it, and some people were saying things like "That was better a second time around" and "I can't believe I just saw that for the 4th time" as they were leaving. It was a big Die-Hard Batman fan party. Again, it was awesome!

Even though The Dark Knight is no longer listed, I saw it for the 3rd time Friday night, and the place was still packed. Just about everyone there had already seen it once. It was awesome!

Hey moviemaniac, I cant believe youre defending Mamma Mia. The amount of money it made has no baring on the fact that it should never have been made. Thats great for Universal but what about all the poor guys that had to be dragged to it, what about them? Mamma Mia is a disgrace to film. The large amount of money it made only says there are a lot of suckers out there.

ha...movie maniac... what we need is people who know what a good movie is leaving comments and not some little kid. That movie was very well done. I think the movie did so poorly because people really dont pay attention to what movie they pay to see, most people are just cattle, going into whatever movie spent the most on advertising. (eagle eye...)

Ha. I knew after seeing the dreadful trailer for Miracle at St. Anna that it would tank. I am so happy it did. We need less films of this caliber. Actually, less films from Spike Lee. He is WAY overrated. I hope this is dropped from theaters by next weekend. Oh and this comment will be addressed towards Moviebuff123. Just so you know, Mamma Mia! is Universal's top grossing film of the year and is a HUGE hit overseas as well. Just goes to show you that you were wrong about it going to be a bomb. Easily in my top 3 films of the summer which include Dark Knight and Wall-E.

That's about what I thought, except I thought Miracle at St. Anna would have done better. Sad to see The Dark Knight not in the top 10.
