1) District 9 - $37 million
2) G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra - $22.5 million
3) The Time Traveler's Wife - $19.2 million
4) Julie & Julia - $12.5 million
5) G-Force - $6.9 million
6) The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard - $5.3 million
7) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - $5.1 million
8) The Ugly Truth - $4.5 million
9) Ponyo - $3.5 million
10) (500) Days of Summer - $3.02 million
With an amazing critical reception at its back, the humans and non-humans of District 9 ran roughshod over its box office competitors this week, taking in an estimated $37 million in its first weekend of release. Director Neill Blomkamp's $30 million film debut has already made its budget back in the first three days and it will be interesting to see if the film drops off much in its second weekend, with such great word-of-mouth and critical praise.
Last weekend's big winner had a pretty big drop-off in its second week in theaters. G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra took second place with an estimated $22.5 million, a 58.9% drop from last weekend's $56.2 million take. The Time Traveler's Wife, the film adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger's best-selling book, did solid biz in third place with $19.2 million, but the rest of the newcomers this week didn't fare that well at all.
The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard came in sixth place with $5.3 million, but this R-rated comedy was only given a modest rollout of 1,838 theaters. The lauded animator Hayao Miyazaki's new film Ponyo took ninth place with just $3.5 million, although it was only screening in 927 theaters. Both films still managed to outdo the teeny-bopper flick Bandslam, which took 13th place with $2.2 million from 2,121 theaters for a dismal per-screen average of $1,061. A new documentary made some noise in limited release, though, with It Might Get Loud taking in $101,000 from just 7 theaters, for an impressive $14,429 per-screen average.
Next week brings us Quentin Tarantino's World War II masterpiece Inglourious Basterds along with Robert Rodriguez's kids film Shorts and Alexis Bleidel's Post Grad in wide release. Be sure to stop by next week to see how District 9 fares against this diverse competition.

D9's already made $62,232,336. That's $32,232,336 profit having broke even with the $30,000,000 budget. It'll go far.

The doc*mentary styled footage looks really f*cking good. Whereas in Cloverfield it was a mediocre ish camera they seemed to be using (I doubt they really used the cam corder lol). So in D9, it still looked cinematic even though it was shot differently than most films. You stop noticing it when stuff starts happening. The catfood thing isn't a big deal and no reason to dislike a movie over. It's actually kind of funny because it's strange. And they explained the how the catfood is to them which was cool (otherwise we would have been like 'what the heck?' lol).
It wasn't a masterpiece, but it was different, which is probably why it got so much praise. They even kind of added a bit of geekness into it by have that Mech looking machine lol. The only downsides in that film are that the main character swore out the same phrases "bloody f*cking whatever" which was kind of annoying and I don't know if anybody else noticed that but I was like "he's not very creative with his words" haha. But anyway, the other was the inevitable cliche' "going back to save the friend alien" which is fine cause we all wanted him to, but it was kinda cliche' in that way. But oh well, overall it was entertaining and intense for a while.

Wait, why am I a f*cktard? ;)
Maybe I should have given D9 a fair chance. The doc*mentary stylized footage, the cat food, my friends sarcastic comments and constant complaining; all to much...
As a film it excelled: original concept, unique direction, and critic backing. As a Saturday night blockbuster to just chillax and enjoy, not so much.
I'll go again sometime with a much more open mind....
But the general consensus, as of now is just "boo-hoo Mr. Jackson...." Hopefully, that'll change. ;)

The Narrator: The Better Man
Yeah Chad, he was sorta the run of the mill guy. Not a dumb brute, just a normal guy, with no taste, preferring action and hot girls to amazing story and dedication. God there's to much of those people like that ALREADY in the movie business.

Why argue anyway? It wasn't meant for you and you didn't understand it, so why continue. That argument isn't even going on anymore. Lol, your very late. I don't have the time to go back to that comment, but maybe i didn't put the right tone into it but who gives a f*ck. It's over and i know i went. Again, did you see where i said 'if'. I had never seen that trailer before. All i watched was the teaser where the alien is in that doc*mentary covered. How could i see the spoiler if i never watched that f*cking trailer? Well, if i had seen that trailer with the spoiler first i would not have blamed him, but I didn't see the trailer and he let out that spoiler from it. Luckily, i had seen it already, but if i hadn't i would be pissed. Your right though, not a big deal. So, let's just leave it alone.

I don't really want to argue with you Newkill, but you didn't explain yourself well enough the first comment and I don't know how to argue against the comment that I've just explained to you that you said before your other comments (that actually do explain what you meant). You should have made sense in your first comment so you didn't have several people arguing with you about something so trivial haha.
"kingbrady, if that was in the trailer than it must have been a quick shot which you could only see by pausing it so that was a spoiler you just gave." - Newkill
I understand that it is a spoiler that was put into the trailer (which you didn't have to pause it to see it-that part was about 10 seconds long) so I don't know how you didn't see it. But how you stated in your first comment, you made it seem like it was kingbrady's fault which it really wasn't (it was the studio or whoever edited the trailer which we are on the same page about now). Like you kinda blamed kingbrady in the first comment then changed it to blaming the studio for the spoiler in the following comments. But yeah anyway not a big deal I just want to clear this up haha.
Fallen, is that guy you work with a meathead or something? Only watches sport films? lol.

Lol. Comrade, they are my friends, but have poor movie taste. And some random people at my work place randomly bash LOTR for being gay, over long, and a crappy story. I almost pummeled the guy. Crappy story my ass!

Newkill's probably right about District 9 getting a nomination over actor Sharlto Copley, especially since there will be ten movies nominated , at least for the forseeable future. Also, leaving a two hour movie twenty minutes into it is very stupid. You have to give movies time to set up. Not all of them can be Saving Private Ryan(the best opening sequence in movie history, at least in my eyes).

The movie would probably have a better chance of getting nominated rather than the main star getting a nom. I doubt Depp will get a nom.

this movie was excellent from beginning to the end and think the main character should get an academy award he has no acting experience and out acted every 1 in any film this year

Well, Chad, if you learned how to understand what you read, you wouldn't have this problem. I said the trailer gave a away a spoiler and kingbrady made it more known by saying that spoiler. I know alot of people that have just watched the teaser and not that trailer with that spoiler in it, because everyone knows trailers have many spoilers. Notice that i said if, because i did not see that trailer, luckily i saw the movie before i heard that but if i would have read that spoiler before i would have been upset.

Well Zany is not a f*cktard. He actually has good taste and is a buddy of mine. Which is why I am surprised he walked out. Then again a lot of people bash me for liking LOTR when they have no idea the work that went into it. Typical. Each their own.

Newkill, maybe you should re-read your comments so I don't have to make fun of you right now haha. You told kingbrady he gave out a spoiler and then you guys argued about it remember? Read your first comment again unless you left out certain words, it was apparant that you were strictly telling kingbrady he gave out a spoiler because you didn't see it in the trailer. Here is your comment:
"kingbrady, if that was in the trailer than it must have been a quick shot which you could only see by pausing it so that was a spoiler you just gave."
It's not that big of a deal I was just helping out, clarifying the whole argument (and Vis I think even chimed in and told us that he saw it too) so it's not I'm making things up here lol. But I do appreciate you being a lot cooler and more civilized conversations to the users lately duder :) Granted, you will be attacked occasionally but I've seen you hold out which is actually healthier for you to do. I only attack people who are hypocrites, unhonest, unfair, and good ol' fashion *ssholes. They actually have to do those things for me to say anything or get a rise out of me.

I laugh at anyone that walks out of D-9 in the first 20 minutes, yes it was the slowest part of the film and kinda felt like sh*t, but i knew from ppl saying its great i wanted to stay and enjoyed every bit,
Perfect Getaway.....nice twist, Funny People kinda long but was a mix of love, sadness and humour.........GI Joe dropping 60% well duhhh that isnt surprising, they took in a strong $22 mill

I agree Newkill, with your last comment that is. But for me, I will always love Reign On Me. That'll be his best work.
Again, D-9 was mind numbing action with an actually good story. I am surprised you walked out Zany..

Yeah, I must say even though i'm the guy that loves the crazy Adam Sandler films like Little Nicky and Waterboy. I do appreciate that he's the only comedian/actor who shows that he actually gives a sh*t about his career and tries to do a lot of different stuff, unlike Eddie Murphy, who's every resource in a film are a fat suit and women's clothing.

So far the only 2 (Two) films I have been impressed with so far are this summer of 2009 that really stuck with me are:
"Orphan" & "A Perfect Getaway" ...at least both of these films were scary and they both had a "Shhhhh! Don't give the ending away"...!!!
& I loved "The Hurt Locker"!! Damn Good film!

I think that many people expected a full-out comedy and disliked the direction Apatow and co. took. I, for one, enjoyed the film on numerous levels.
It's to bad it dropped off the list...

Zany, I almost forgot about Funny People. Wow, that isn't even in the list anymore. I guess a lot of people wasn't used to that serious side of Adam Sandler.

As a point I am open to all movies, and at least try to enjoy even the sh*ttiest of films; District 9 proved to be an exception. What the f*ck happened? I kept nodding off, hoping for an exit. Finally, I walked out (which I had never done before), and my buddy and I "traded up" for Funny People.
I'm satisfied knowing my nine dollars was not part of its box office revenue...
