BOX OFFICE BEAT DOWN: Disney's Race to Witch Mountain Finishes in First Place with $25 Million

Weekend Box Office

1) Race to Witch Mountain $25 million
2) Watchmen $18 million
3) The Last House on the Left $14.6 million
4) Taken $6.6 million
5) Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail $5.1 million
6) Slumdog Millionaire $5 million
7) Paul Blart: Mall Cop $3.1 million
8) He's Just Not That Into You $2.9 million
9) Coraline $2.6 million
10) Miss March $2.3 million

Disney's Race to Witch Mountain flew out of the gate going 100 miles per hour. The kid-friendly thriller raced into the number one spot this weekend, taken in an estimated $25 million. This was $3 million more than the opening grosses for Dwayne Johnson's 2007 comedy The Game Plan, which proved to be a substantial hit for both Disney and The Rock. That film went on to collect more than $90 million at the box office. Race to Witch Mountain will most likely do the same.

Dropping to number two in its second week of release is the comic book adaptation Watchmen. The action drama pulled in another $18 million, which places its cumulative grosses at $86 million. Opening in third place was Wes Craven's remake of The Last House on the Left. A crowd pleaser, this horrifying new take on an old classic pulled in $14.6 million. This week's only other major release Miss March kerplunked itself all the way down in the number ten spot. It opened this weekend to a rather lackluster $2.3 million take.

Opening in limited release, the dramedy Sunshine Cleaning had the highest per screen average for the weekend. It took in an estimated $214,000 playing on four screens. If given the 3,187 screens held by Race to Witch Mountain, the film could have potentially walked away with $6.8 billion dollars. Also opening in limited release was the film Tokyo Sonata which earned $30,000 from just two screens.

Next week makes for a crowded marketplace as the comedy I Love You, Man opens against the Julia Roberts' caper Duplicity as well as Nicolas Cage's Knowing. The Rock doesn't stand a chance.

Race to Witch Mountain was released March 13th, 2009 and stars Dwayne Johnson, AnnaSophia Robb, Alexander Ludwig, Carla Gugino, CiarĂ¡n Hinds, Tom Everett Scott, Chris Marquette, Billy Brown. The film is directed by Andy Fickman.

Watchmen was released March 6th, 2009 and stars Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Patrick Wilson, Carla Gugino, Matt Frewer. The film is directed by Zack Snyder.

Taken was released January 30th, 2009 and stars Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, Leland Orser, Jon Gries, David Warshofsky, Holly Valance, Katie Cassidy, Xander Berkeley. The film is directed by Pierre Morel.

Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail was released February 20th, 2009 and stars Tyler Perry, Derek Luke, Keshia Knight Pulliam, David Mann, Tamela J. Mann, RonReaco Lee, Ion Overman, Vanessa Ferlito. The film is directed by Tyler Perry.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop was released January 16th, 2009 and stars Kevin James, Keir O'Donnell, Jayma Mays, Raini Rodriguez, Shirley Knight, Stephen Rannazzisi, Peter Gerety, Bobby Cannavale. The film is directed by Steve Carr.

Jesse Ventura was excellent in "Predator." :P

And it's been ages since I saw "Jingle All the Way," so my bad. It's really not that big of a deal that Dwayne Johnson (You can't call him The Rock anymore, people) does Disney films, since he's good at em. But w/e. We all have opinions for a reason, right?

Well somehow The Rock pulled off the big guy with the little kids thing. Vin tried it and it flopped lol. I'm actually suprised to not see The Rock in any chick flicks since there are a lot of women who find him attractive. I'm just sayin', he's around for a reason, I don't know what the big deal is lol. That's like you being mad that Jesse the Body Ventura was in movies.

..... Wasn't "Jingle All the Way" a Disney movie? And he was in the "Around the World in 80 Days" remake with Jackie Chan, too...

He already tried and failed which is y he's hanging onto his career with Disney. C'mon Doom? Scorpian king? what about Spyhunter? Williams may b perverted an foul mouthed but hes also talented.

He needs to break out of his mold. Walking Tall and The Rundown were his best films.

So what if he is getting money to make these corny kids movies lol? He's getting $$$$$$$ lol. You might as well be hating on Robin Williams too. He's one of the most perverted, foul mouthed comedians ever. His personality is completely opposite in most of the films he does. I mean come on, Aladdin and RV? He was still funny, just in a kids movie. Btw, I thought the Game Plan was good for a family film. I think The Rock needs to do a serious bad ass role (not Doom haha). Something that's a big budget action movie. Like a superhero movie or a villian in one.

I'm not saying that it didn't do well financially, which it certanlly did. It's just that they sold it as "the movie to end all comic-book movies" and it ended up with a cold reception at best, and falling behind a Disney movie in its second weekend...
It is a matter of proportion between the amount of previous hype and the actual result, that's where it failed.

hes an ass. he tried making himself the next "annuuld" but that fell flat which is y hes ruduced 2 making cheeky family crap like this and the gameplan. yes some actors r talented. some r stuck up. id put Johnson in the latter. i mean he speaks about himself in the 3rd person in some interviews! oh well 2 each there own. an i wouldent go so far as 2 say Watchmem "flopped" didint live up 2 expectations Dani it has made some great money so far. and i do agree that Craven is a hack nowandays. ugh another rem

Actually, The Rock can act, that's why he was so popular. Why do I have to argue common sense to people? It's f*cking annoying. He has charisma, acting, muscles, humor, and overall seems like a pretty good guy (if you have seen him behind the camera he's nice and fun which is rare for how popular he is). Some actors are stuck up.

giving the amount of hype that was created around Watchmen, it's easy to say this movie FLOPED. Just look at how well 300 performed as an R-rated film without having that much expectation.

I skipped both films this weekend......being a flm buff ...I found it stupid to waste moeny in these hard economic times on two films which I already own the "ORGINIAL" & found it pointless to see films which have already been done ....

...and Wes Craven is a hack for Re-Making "The Last House on the Left" ...Man it also got the "WORST" reviews of any film so far this year!!!

I knew "Watchmen" would fall ....the hype wore off!!!

NEXT WEEK IS "Duplicity: W./Clive Owen & Julia Roberts...This is what I can't wait to see this weekend (03/20/2009)!
Nicolas Cage's "Knowing" LOOKS interesting ...but most of Mr. Carge's films have sucked!!!

  20. Vamp

Don't be dissing The Rock (Actually, it's Dwayne Johnson now. He doesn't own the rights to use the name "The Rock," anymore. That belongs to Kevin Nash, or whatever. ;]) He's a pretty good actor, and to be honest, I don't know why it's such a problem that he wants to do Disney movies. Sure it's nice to see him in a more serious action role, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with Disney movies (Done right), except that you're all trying to convince yourself that you're older than you are. Embrace your inner child people! EMBRACE IT! lmfao...
