Fanboys didn't turn out in the droves needed to push Sucker Punch, Zack Snyder's first attempt at original material, into the top spot at the box office this weekend. Instead, the family-friendly sequel Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules proved surprisingly strong and handily beat the competition.
At a reported production cost of only $21 million, Fox's Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules looks to be already in the black and given that families are less likely to see a movie on opening weekend the numbers should hold strong as more and more kids get their spring breaks over the next couple of weeks. Also, apparently the actor playing Rodrick, Devon Bostick, is piquing the interest of teen girls helping to get them into the theater as well.
Unfortunately for Sucker Punch, the poor grosses do not bode well. Its target audience is known for seeing movies on opening weekends and this less-than-stellar showing, combined with its scathingly bad reviews, means Warner Bros. will have a hard time recouping their investment which is said to be anywhere between $85 million to $100 million plus. Of course, this doesn't include the marketing expenses either. Looks like Zack Snyder will have to double-down on his upcoming Superman remake if he wants to retain his golden boy status at the studio.
There wasn't much else of note this weekend. Mars Needs Moms continues to bomb, clinging to the bottom spot with a measly $2.5 million. On the other hand, The Lincoln Lawyer is proving to have legs with its nearly $11 million take giving it the smallest week-to-week drop (-17%). Ditto for Limitless which also remained strong with only a 19% drop from last week.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules was released March 25th, 2011 and stars Zachary Gordon, Devon Bostick, Rachael Harris, Robert Capron, Steve Zahn, Connor Fielding, Owen Fielding, Peyton List. The film is directed by David Bowers.
Limitless was released March 18th, 2011 and stars Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro, Abbie Cornish, Andrew Howard, Anna Friel, Johnny Whitworth, Tomas Arana, Robert John Burke. The film is directed by Neil Burger.
Rango was released March 4th, 2011 and stars Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Ned Beatty, Alfred Molina, Bill Nighy, Stephen Root, Harry Dean Stanton. The film is directed by Gore Verbinski.
Sucker Punch was released March 25th, 2011 and stars Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Carla Gugino, Oscar Isaac, Jon Hamm. The film is directed by Zack Snyder.

@soylentgreen2 I care because with this success, and the likely success of the sequels to come, we are going to get even more sh*tty ass movies like wimpy kid. And they are going to bring in money that other, better, films released at the same time deserve.

Sucker Punch was highly enjoyable. It's not Avatar people. If you won't see it because it's PG13 then you were already looking for a reason to hate.

wow, Im saddened that children and their parents find gross-out jokes more entertaining than explosions and hot girls
whatever, at least Sucker Punch made an effort and didn't fall off the top 10
I saw it with some friends and we had a hell of a lot of fun
the critics can kiss my ass again

@slysnide Oh I see, that makes sense.
@brew1701 I think it was supposed to be, but then they decided not to. I don't know if it was because of the people who were complaining, if the 3D was just not good enough, or if zack snyder just wasn't into 3D. it's weird though watching sucker punch, because you can totally tell it was supposed to be in 3D because there are scenes where sh*t flies at the screen that you can totally tell were pretty much made for 3D (mainly the samurai and robot fights.)

@PRsjSzssdZUcwv I thought that Sucker Punch was supposed to be in 3-D?? did they change that or am I completely wrong? If it wasnt than I think that it should have been it would've helped it @ the BO I think.

Im eager to see how much Sucker Punch will drop by next weekend, then we will know for sure if it will be a complete fail, or just a utter fail. As for the BO numbers, this is a little surprising but goes and shows you that family/kids movies can kick ass

maybe im alone here but i lost intrest in Sucker punch the second i found out they were going with a pg 13 direction. Plus i know im probly gonna get more hate mail then George Lucasfor typing this but im getting a little tired of the "tough hero chick" genre, Besides the RE an underworld movies we got "Salt" leaving a bad taste in my mouth. Dont get me wrong im all 4 girl power but where are all the tough guy action hero's we grew up watching and looking up too as kids? Vin Diesel??? Dwayne Johnson??? shame when that's the best we got in theatres, No wonder they keep draging Arnie an Sly to make "Real guy action flicks".. jus my 2 cents people....

@combatmadness360 i know but Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2 appeals to family's it was going to win one way or the anther sucker punch has girls and skimpy outfits not something family's want to see i know thats not want sucker punch is all about but the TV spots and adds were helping sucker punch to fail.

I saw Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2 with my nephew, we both loved the first one, and this one was just as funny, it was good and deserved to be #1. I love Zach Snyder's work, he is a good director, but the marketing for the movie was not very clear as to what the hell the movie was about, I think that was the main killer for it, oh well just get to work on Superman already!!

Wimpy Kid wasn't a wimp after all, and what happened to the fanboys showing up for Punch? Yep we didn't help by giving it negative reviews. I got a kicked out of it considering they edited the hell out of it to get a Pg-13 rating. 5 dance scenes, topless scene, narrative overdub. How wonder it was a mess. Hopefully Directors cut like Watchmen in maximum mode could explain all this. But #2? what a shame...
