There was a storm at the box office this weekend as moviegoers embraced falling meatballs this weekend. The animated film Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs dominated the box office this weekend, taking the top spot with an estimated $30.1 million. The film had the widest release of any film currently in theaters (3,119) and scored an impressive $9,651 per-screen average. The film's dominance was even more impressive since three other films opened in wide release, but couldn't even come close to the Sony animated film.
The new Matt Damon/Steven Soderbergh collaboration The Informant! came in a very distant second place with $10.1 million. The film received a decent 2,505-theater rollout, but could only muster a $4,210 per-screen average. Still, the film was produced under a $22 million budget, so the film shouldn't have many problems earning its money back. Last weekend's box office winner, Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All by Myself dropped to third place with $10.06 million, dropping a sizeable 57.1% in its second weekend.
The Jennifer Aniston/Aaron Eckhart romantic comedy Love Happens took fourth place with an estimated $8.4 million, but the big news was the failure of the Megan Fox horror-comedy Jennifer's Body, which took fifth place with a paltry $6.8 million. The film had the second-highest theater count of the weekend (2,702), but it only took in a meager $2,517 per-screen average. On the arthouse side, Jane Campion's Bright Star took in $190,000 from just 19 theaters for an impressive $10,000 per-screen average.
Next week brings us three new releases and two notable films in limited release. The dance remake Fame is expected to get the widest release with the futuristic Bruce Willis thriller Surrogates and the horror film Pandorum going wide as well. On the limited release side, the hotly-anticipated horror film Paranormal Activity will be released in 12 theaters in scattered markets nationwide while the new Michael Moore documentary Capitalism: A Love Story will be released in just four theaters in New York and Los Angeles, leading up to its nationwide rollout on October 2. Be sure to check back here next Sunday to see who came out on top at the box office.

Love Happens was terrible. Cloudy was pretty funny and the Informant was great. And I can't beleive it but, Jennifers Body was watchable.

I went to see "Jennifer's Body" more out of curiosity ...since I was familiar with the plot ...and who couldn't ignore the hullabaloo over Megan Fox...(I.E. Rolling Stone Mgazine!)...but I was really surprised with the film overall!
Not bad ...slow in parts...wild plot ....
