Disney has a bonafide hit on its hands with Beverly Hills Chihuahua. For the second straight week in a row, the film landed in the number one spot despite some major competition. It racked up another $17.5 million, placing its cumulative grosses at $52.5 million. Strong word of mouth has kept this one going, and it should stick around the top ten for at least a few more weeks.

Some audience members were definitely in the mood to be scared, as this week's other major release Quarantine landed in the number two spot with a close $14.2 million. Ridley Scott's latest thriller Body of Lies, which stars the mighty pairing of Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe, climbed into third place with a cool $13.1 million take.

Two other major releases couldn't quite find footing in this overcrowded market place. The Ernie Davis inspired The Express quietly kicked things off in the sixth place spot, earning just $4.7 million. But the true disappointment comes from Fox's City of Ember. The Bill Murray children's tale could only muster up a weak $3.2 million in tenth place. Look for it to be completely off the charts by next week.

Two smaller films did alright for themselves on the Independent arthouse scene. RocknRolla had the highest per screen average of the weekend, taking in $20,143 at just seven theaters for a $141,000 cumulative gross. The Mike Leigh dramedy Happy-Go-Lucky had the second best per screen average, taking in $20,000 on four screens. That evens out to a cool take of $80,000 for the weekend.

Next week, look for Disney's Chihuahuas to go up against Max Payne, W., and the very funny Sex Drive. It should be one heck of a box office brawl.

I'm glad that "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" did good. I want to see that movie, actually.

Body of lies deserves that top spot. Fantastic movie. Of course, the r-rating kept it from it's box office potential. Let's hope it gets an oscar out of it to make up for the lack of money

Wow. City of Ember has entered the "box-office bomb" list, right along side Pluto Nash and Time Bandits. Too bad.

Even Ghostbusters 2 didn't bomb NEARLY that bad. Hope you recover from this blow soon Mr. Murray (jk dude, you know I love ya).

I like chihuahuas. My car likes them more.

haha... I'm curious... how many of you have actually SEEN the movie? Many of us are ready to knock a movie simply because of what we see in the trailers.

I had to take my daughters to see the movie and its NOTHING like the trailers. It isn't a very good movie, but it IS entertaining... for young and old.

By no means am I trying to justify it beating Body of Lies. I saw that movie as well and its WAAAAYY better. But realistically... its not gonna beat a kiddie movie that's somewhat entertaining. Its just a fact. Although I honestly thought it would. These were my predictions this past Thursday for the weekend:

    1 Body of Lies - 23.0 million (3 - 13.1 million)
    2 Beverly Hills Chihuahua - 18.5 million (1 - 17.5 million)
    3 Quarantine - 18.0 million (2 - 14.2 million)
    4 Eagle Eye - 12.5 million (4 - 11.0 million)
    5 The Express - 8.0 million (6 - 4.7 million)
    6 City of Ember - 7.5 million (10 - 3.2 million)
    7 Nick & Nora's Infinite Playlist - 6.5 million (5 - 6.5 million)
    8 Nights in Rodanthe - 4.2 million (7 - 4.6 million)
    9 Appaloosa - 3.4 million (8 - 3.4 million)
    10 Burn After Reading - 3.0 million (14 - 2.1 million

So even though I had seen Chihuahua, I thought Body of Lies would still end up number one. Guess I underestimated the kiddie world. haha

What the f*ck is going on? I cant believe people actually saw that f*cking so called movie. Wow. That really is a shame, Body of Lies was excellent and deserves better. Audiences are getting dumber and dumber by the minute.

No accounting for taste I suppose. I know it's school season and all, but Body of Lies is a must see. Don't let travesties like this happen again America. Anything but the Chihuahua movie.

Max Payne should knock out the Chihuahuas next week... but the real problem is a high number of releases the last three weeks. Its too damn cluttered and it stretches the options for movie goers. I myself haven't been able to see all the movies I want the past three weeks.

Oh, come on. I can't believe that "Chihuahua" movie is actually still making money! It was nothing but crap. "George Lopez" can't act even if his life depended on it. I know it is just a kid's movie, but still, "Body Of Lies didn't make the money it deserves.

Quarantine was cool, but Body of Lies was excellent. DiCaprio gave a great performance. City of Ember was pretty good too.
