BOX OFFICE BEAT DOWN: Battle: Los Angeles Destroys the Box Office with $36 Million!

The new animated-Western Rango rode to the top of the charts last week earning rave reviews and $38 million in its debut. But with three new films entering the box office race this week including the alien invasion movie Battle: Los Angeles, the fairy tale based horror film Red Riding Hood, and the computer-animated Disney movie Mars Needs Moms, the Johnny Depp comedy was unable to retain its box office crown for a second week in a row.

Debuting at number one this week is the new alien invasion movie from Darkness Falls director Jonathan Liebesman called Battle: Los Angeles. The film stars Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight), and Michelle Rodriguez (Avatar), as well as Bridget Moynahan (I, Robot), and Michael Peña (Crash). The film made $10,536 on each of its 3,417 screens for an opening weekend total of $36 million, which earns back just over half of its initial $70 million production budget.

Dropping one place from its debut last week to number two is the new computer animated Western from Pirates of The Caribbean: The Curse of The Black Pearl director Gore Verbinski called Rango. The film stars Oscar nominee Johnny Depp (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas), as well as Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers), Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine), Bill Nighy (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End), Alfred Molina (Spider-Man 2), Ray Winstone (Edge of Darkness), and Timothy Olyphant (I Am Number Four). While the movie fell 39.5% from last week, it earned $5,876 on each of its 3,923 screens for a weekend total of about $23 million. In two weeks of release the film has now earned about $68.6 million, which is just over half of its initial $135 million production budget.

Debuting at number three this week is the new fairy tale based horror film Red Riding Hood from Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke. The film stars Amanda Seyfried (Dear John), as well as Max Irons (Being Julia), Lukas Haas (Brick), Billy Burke (Drive Angry), Michael Hogan (Battlestar Galactica), Michael Shanks (Smallville), Oscar nominees Virginia Madsen (Sideways), and Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight), and Oscar winner Julie Christie (Heaven Can Wait). The film made $4,665 on each of its 3,030 screens for an opening weekend total of $14.1 million, which is a far cry from earning back the film's initial $42 million production budget.

Falling two spots back from its debut last week to number four is the new science-fiction thriller The Adjustment Bureau. The film stars Oscar winner Matt Damon (The Bourne Ultimatum), as well as Emily Blunt (Charlie Wilson's War) (Charlie Wilson's War), Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker), Michael Kelly (Fair Game), Daniel Dae Kim (Lost), John Slattery (Mad Men), Terence Stamp (The Limey), and Oscar nominee Shohreh Aghdashloo (House of Sand and Fog). While the movie fell 45.8% from last week, it earned $4,025 on each of its 2,874 screens for a weekend total of about $11.4 million. In two weeks of release the film has now earned about $38.4 million.

Finally, debuting at number five this week is the new computer animated film called Mars Needs Moms. The film stars Seth Green (Robot Chicken), Joan Cusack (Toy Story 3), Dan Fogler (Take Me Home Tonight), Elisabeth Harnois (A Single Man), Mindy Sterling (Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery), and Tom Everett Scott (Southland). The film made $2,182 on each of its 3,117 screens for an opening weekend total of $6.8 million. But the film will have to do extremely well in the next few weeks if it has any hope of earning back it's initial $150 million production budget.

Doing well in its debut in limited release this week is the new dramatic film Jane Eyre. The movie stars Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland), and Michael Fassbender (Jonah Hex), as well as Jamie Bell (Jumper), Sally Hawkins (Made in Dagenham), and Oscar winner Judi Dench (Quantum of Solace). The film made $45,500 on each of its 4 screens for an opening weekend total of $182,000.

Next week will see the opening of three new films in wide release and one in limited release.

First up, opening in wide release next week is the new sci-fi comedy from Superbad and Adventureland director Greg Mottola called Paul. The film reunites Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz stars Simon Pegg (Star Trek) and Nick Frost (Pirate Radio), and also features an all-star cast that includes Seth Rogen (The Green Hornet), Kristen Wiig (Whip It!), Bill Hader (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs), Jason Bateman (The Kingdom), Jane Lynch (Role Models), David Koechner (The Comebacks), Jeffrey Tambor (Hellboy), and three-time Oscar nominee Sigourney Weaver (Avatar).

Also opening in wide release next week is the new thriller from The Illusionist director Neil Burger called Limitless. The film stars Bradley Cooper (The A-Team), as well as Abbie Cornish (Sucker Punch), Anna Friel (Land of the Lost), and two-time Oscar winner Robert De Niro (Goodfellas).

Finally, opening next week in wide release is the new mystery suspense thriller called The Lincoln Lawyer, based on the popular novel of the same name. The film stars Matthew McConaughey (A Time to Kill), as well as Ryan Phillippe (MacGruber), John Leguizamo (Righteous Kill), Michael Peña (World Trade Center), Josh Lucas (A Beautiful Mind), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Bob Gunton (The Shawshank Redemption), Frances Fisher (Titanic), Oscar nominee William H. Macy (Fargo), and Oscar winner Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny).

And opening in limited release next week is the new independent sports comedy Win Win from writer/director Thomas McCarthy (The Visitor). The film stars Oscar nominee Paul Giamatti (Sideways), as well as Melanie Lynskey (Up in the Air), Bobby Cannavale (The Station Agent), Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development), Burt Young (Rocky), and Oscar nominee Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone). So please check back in seven days to see who comes out on top at the box office next week!

@skywise - maybe it's just me, watching the VHS in my brother's basement past midnight. I thought to watch it again, but the little bit they showed in a waiting room reminded me of why I wasn't too fond of it to begin with :P

I agree to your disagree, sir.

@diaigma oh i didnt mean about the plot line. Its as generic as any disney movie and not the animals lives as its been done many times with many animals. But the characters and its presentation were pretty awesome and groundbreaking at the time.

We have to agree to disagree because its a movie i love and you hate. so be it.

disney needs to stick to 2d with a 3d background picture and maybe a few live-action film, let pixar to those type of film, stop giving so much money into these film use some of that money into clinics or classrooms. I wanna see paul next.

@diaigma Come on Bug's Life towers over Cars in originality. Not to mention some of the greatest Pixar one-lineers on film.

Cars is my lowest-rated PIxar film and I still give it a 3.5/5. It's cute, it just doesn't have the depth or originality of any of their other films. A Bug's Life is a close second on the bottom of the list, though.

    I gave it a 3. AGAIN with that .5 difference :P
I thought Antz was better. Bug's Life was just loud and obnoxious.

@diaigma I give Cars a 2.5/5 rating. Which is bad in my book. Bug's Life was amusing :)

@shuabert - one that my kid doesn't want to see. Surprise, surprise :P
But I hear you. Cars wasn't a bad movie to me either. That goes to Bugs Life.

While flawed in a lot of ways, I think Cars is far from a bad movie. What it lacks is the maturity and originality of other Pixar fare. I think for that reason it's their most popular franchise with little kids. The movie is five years old and you still see it being marketed as a brand on kids' backpacks, lunchboxes, and t-shirts ad nauseum. So it makes sense that they would choose it as the one to do a sequel to. People tend to hate on it because it doesn't wow like other Pixar films like Toy Story and Wall-E. It's definitely my least-favorite Pixar film too. But I think it's important to situate it as the most definitively "kids" movie of the Pixar canon, and appreciate it in that respect.

  22. The Narrator: The Better Man

@daveactor7, not a single one of my friends, nearly all of which are just as much film buffs as I, think that Pixar is capable of any serious flaw. I must actually applaud them for cementing the term "instant success" into the hearts and minds of moviegoers across the globe at the sight of their name, in every way possible. That takes time, and hard work, absolutely. But they are capable of making mistakes. I'm not bang wagoning. I don't hate Pixar, or the common folk that tends to see them as something gaudy in the film industry. They are gaudy. All I'm saying is that Cars 2 is a mistake on their part, and I was simply addressing @diaigma's comment about the film itself getting a rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

@narrator lol everyone doesnt always say Pixar touches out hearts im pretty sure of that.
Also-I tend to look towards Top Critics ratings only.
Can we stop talking about Cars 2? You knw u hate it. Its gona still come out, lets just move on.

  28. The Narrator: The Better Man

@diaigma, while I'm with you guys, I'm still betting Cars 2 will make it above "rotten" due to the common crowd having a say in the matter, and as we all know, the word Pixar sells the film to nearly every demo-graph out there. It'll probably be the lowest rated Pixar film to date, but it'll still be above average in the eyes of film goers, simply because Pixar touches our hearts... bullsh*t.

  29. Daveactor7

Will u guys be mad if it gets fresh? lol
