Tim Burton's 3D fantasy adventure Alice in Wonderland stayed at the top of the box office charts for the third weekend in a row, despite some worthy newcomers in the race. It earned another $34.5 million, placing its total domestic grosses at $265.8 million. So far, it's earned $565 million globally, making it the biggest hit of 2010 thus far.
Vying for that coveted second place spot were Diary of a Wimpy Kid and The Bounty Hunter, which both went toe to toe all weekend long. It was Thor Freudenthal's adaptation of Jeff Kinney's middle school adventure that won out, with Diary collecting a respectable $21.8 million. The Jennifer Aniston/Gerard Butler romantic action comedy, which was directed by Andy Tennant, came in a close third with The Bounty Hunter collecting a firm $21 million.
This weekend's other big new release didn't fare quite as well. Miguel Sapochnik's gory sci-fi thriller failed to muster up much of an audience, bringing in only $6.1 million in fourth place. But that was enough to nudge last week's new releases down a couple of notches, with She's Out of My League taking in $6 million in fifth place, and the Matt Damon actionier Green Zone pulling in just $5.9 million in sixth place.
On the indie scene, City Island had the highest per screen average of the weekend, taking in $17,500 in its two venues for a total of $35,000. Warner Bros.' latest IMAX venture Hubble 3D came in with the second highest per screen average, earning $11,615 on each of its 39 screens for a total of $453,000. And Summit Entertainment's rock and roll biopic The Runaways, starring Kristen Steward and Dakota Fanning, pulled in a meager $803,000 on 244 screens.
Next week Alice will have to contend with DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon and the hilarious time travel comedy Hot Tub Time Machine. Be sure to check back here next Sunday to see which of these films will be atop the Box Office Beat Down.
Alice in Wonderland was released March 5th, 2010 and stars Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Crispin Glover, Matt Lucas, Stephen Fry, Michael Sheen. The film is directed by Tim Burton.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid was released March 19th, 2010 and stars Zachary Gordon, Robert Capron, Rachael Harris, Steve Zahn, Connor Fielding, Owen Fielding, Devon Bostick, Chloe Moretz. The film is directed by Thor Freudenthal.

I'm gonna laugh if How To Train Your Dragon knocks Wonderland down, but I wouldn't be surprised if Titans jumped up there.

"Alice in Wonderland" Stays on Top for 3rd Weekend with $34.5 Million ... I guess there was nothing else to see at the box office this weekend!! A generic, joyless adventure story.! D- Thank God I in't ee it in 3-D and waste the extra money!!!
I finally saw "The Blind Side" (2009) this weekend... .. WOW! A+ Sandra Bullock knocked it out of the ball park!!!!.
Next weekend looks dull ..."Animation's How to Train Your Dragon" looks dull and done before ..... & well, 'Hot Tub Time Machine" looks like crap in a bag...Nobody laughs during the trailer ...I guess John Cusack needs the paycheck ,,,,LQQk at "2010" which stunk too!

Next weekends "How to train your dragon" should knock "AIW" down to at least 2nd. With "Titans" the weekend after next, it should stay in the top 5 till May comes around.

Good news for a good movie. Bounty Hunter wasn't that great, Aniston does nothing for me.
