Animated dragons and furry animals were no match for the return of Freddy Krueger this weekend as the re-imagining of A Nightmare On Elm Street took the number one spot as predicted. Director Samuel Bayer's re-imagining of the classic 1984 horror film stars Oscar Award nominee Jackie Earle Haley as the iconic character and earned about $32.2 million at the box office this weekend. While early estimates had the film tracking around $35.6 million the film fell just short of that but could end up earning it by Monday morning. The film was released in 3,332 theaters and earned $9,665 on each, which was more than enough to earn back the film's purported $27 million production cost. Coming in second place this week is last week's reigning champ How to Train Your Dragon, which earned another $10.8 million this weekend. The film premiered at number one during its debut week but then dropped down to the lower part of the top five, where it stayed until two weeks ago when it bounced back to duke it out with Kick-Ass for the number one spot. While it ultimately came in second that weekend in a photo finish, it finally retained the top spot last week out of nowhere in it's fifth week on the charts. The movie, which stars Gerard Butler, Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, Craig Ferguson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jonah Hill and Kristen Wiig has now made $192 million in six weeks surpassing it's $165 million production cost. While the film dropped 29.5% and was seen on 239 less films than the week before, it still managed to earn $3,160 on each of its 3,426 screens.Taking the third place again this week for the second week in a row is the Steve Carell & Tina Fey comedy Date Night, which earned an additional $7.6 million this weekend. The film dropped 27.4% from the previous week and was seen on 201 less screens, earning $2,457 in each of the 3,093 theaters it was shown in. The movie has now earned $73.6 million in just four weeks, surpassing its $55 million production cost. Dropping two spaces from last week to number four is the Jennifer Lopez romantic comedy The Back-Up Plan co-starring Alex O'Loughlin. The film dropped 40.7% from its debut last weekend and earned $2,207 on each of its 3,280 screens for a weekend total of $7.2 million. The film has now grossed around $22.9 million in just two weeks but is still short of earning back it's $35 million production cost. Finally, rounding off the top five this week is the children's animal comedy Furry Vengeance starring Brendan Fraser and Brooke Shields. The film managed to earn $6.5 million in its debut weekend and was seen on 2,997 screens, earning about $2,169 in each theater.
Doing well this week in limited release are two brand new movies, Please Give and Harry Brown. Please Give stars Catherine Keener, Amanda Peet and Oliver Platt, and earned $128,000 in its opening weekend. The film was seen on only five screens and managed to earn $25,600 on each screen. Also doing well in limited release in it's opening weekend is the British revenge film Harry Brown starring Oscar winner Michael Caine. The film was seen on nineteen screens and earned $9,474 on each for a total of $180,000. The Argentine film, The Secret in Their Eyes, by acclaimed director Juan José Campanella and starring Ricardo Darín continues to do well in limited release. The film rose another 1.4% this week, adding 12 theaters for a total of 45 and earning $8,111 on each for a weekend total of $365,000. That brings the films total gross to around $1 million in just three weeks.
Next weekend will see only one new movie open in wide release and four in limited release. The summer movie season officially begins next week with the release of the highly anticipated Marvel Studios sequel Iron Man 2. The film, which is directed by Jon Favreau and stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson, continues the adventures of industrialist Tony Stark and his quest to protect the world as the super-hero, Iron Man. Opening next week in limited release are the films Solitary Man starring Oscar winners Michael Douglas and Susan Sarandon, Mother And Child starring Annette Bening, Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and Samuel L. Jackson, and Multiple Sarcasms starring Oscar winners Timothy Hutton and Mira Sorvino. Also next week in limited release are the documentary films, Babies and Casino Jack And The United States Of Money about disgrace political lobbyist Jack Abramoff. How to Train Your Dragon was released March 26th, 2010 and stars Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T.J. Miller, Kristen Wiig. The film is directed by Dean DeBlois, Chris Sanders.

I just saw the movie and I must admit that I like it. This remake was pretty solid and better than the original in my opinion. The first one was cheesy and bad acted, but idea was great. I saw all Nightmares and I liked this one more. I liked changes and darker tone. Jackie as Krugger rules. Robert's Freddy was too crazy and cartoonish for me. Defenetly see this movie. In cinema or at home, whatever...

Just because it made money doesn't mean it's good. People were just interested. And by "people" I mean 13 year olds spending their parents money to see this who don't know what the real Elm St. is all about. Check out the reviews @mattyboy. Almost everyone who did see it think it's one of the worst remakes of all-time.

KRUEGER PUTS HIS CLAWS INTO THE FURRY CRITTERS- I'm surprised that the new A Nightmare On Elm Street got this good of a response.. but on the other hand it did already have the acclaim title from the classic ones! Furry Vengeance didn't have a chance even though it was a family movie. As far as remakes is concerned, I don't want to see another in theaters like Clash Of The Titans, it was a destruction of the great classic one...! I'm wait for Iron Man 2... Freddy's got claws but Tony's got his own Stark Industry weapons to beam his way through the box office... Stay tuned, huh?

I saw this Saturday night with my kids. Compared to all these remakes coming out, it was actually good. Of course, there were complaints from a few people. But that's because they went seeing it to compare it with the original and wanting the humorous Krueger. This version is more of a retelling than a remake. A darker version. I appreciated the fact that they went further into what Freddy did to those kids that caused the parents to take matters into their own hands. You will recognize some of the scenes from various Nightmare On Elm Street movies. It's worth seeing.
One complaint I'm sick of hearing about is the fact that Robert Englund wasn't Freddy. The man is in his 60's now. And no longer in the physical shape he was back then. Yes, we all loved him as Freddy. But this a new version of NOEM. Jackie Earle Haley did a good job. Englund was offered the role of the doctor which ended up being given to an actress because he turned it down when he found out Wes Craven couldn't be a consultant on set. But he did approve of Haley's performance as Freddy.
And War-Machine, what the hell is wrong with you?! Why would you come on here telling people what happened in Iron Man 2? I watched it online as well. My kids and I found ourselves a little bored watching it. But I wouldn't come on here saying why because not everyone on here has seen it yet. The same way I didn't mention what complaints I had about Nightmare On Elm Street. I may end up spoiling it for them. Have some consideration.

War machines only shows up in like final 35 minutes of the movie
The clip where war machine and iron man fight all those bots is at the end and iron man tells war machine get down and iron man uses like a spinning move shooting out 2 Lasers and kills all those bots. In comes whiplash grabs both whip his whips iron man and war machine shoot beams at eachother makin a big explosion and pretty much destroy whiplashes armor. He laughs cause he sets up those bots with bombs

This is a very good opening. No real surprise that it was lower than what Friday the 13th did in its first weekend since Friday the 13th is a bigger series. The movie was great(not better than the original) and I can't wait for the sequel.

OK i saw the movie and Freddy is way too darker and meaner!!! Its worth it, except for the same classical kills wer re-done with current vis-effects, no creativity in killing styles!!! otherthan that its neat and clean, when ever someone falls asleep, u'll deff get a feel "OMG!! here goes, Freddy gonna come all of a sudden from nower and give me a heart attack",.,.
