Blu-Ray Reliance on PlayStation 3 Is Cause for Concern

The embedded Blu-Ray player on Sony's PlayStation 3 console may have been the determining factor in the format war victory over HD DVD, but a new report suggests they shouldn't put all their BD eggs in the PS3 basket. According to Next-Gen Biz, the Blu-Ray market is dominated by the PS3 player and the studios should be leery of that.

"The studios better hope that people are playing movies on their PlayStations," said ABI Research analyst Steve Wilson. "Otherwise there's very little installed base."

Wilson added that, in 2008, approximately 85% of all Blu-Ray players on the market were the PS3 console and he didn't expect the stand-alone or PC-based players won't be up to speed until 2013.

He said that with consumers' growing DVD libraries and the advent of upcoversion DVD players, which account for 35% of DVD players now and should be 60% by 2013, the average customer doesn't see too much need to upgrade to BD.

"The studios had hoped to have settled the war," Wilson added. "But I think they're going to be disappointed when they don't see the volumes of players going up they way they would have liked."

hmmmm i find that switching to blueray for myself is a long way away. first and foremost is the pricing the players are at $400. Buying a ps3 in order to play blueray movies is also a waste of money. And also the pricing of the discs themselves is a turnoff. I have close to 1000 titles on dvd i would upconvert and later on switch over to blueray. I am glad that blueray won the format war though because it keeps microsoft's hands out of this part of the entertainment business some what. As for downloading not a good idea i would rather have the disc on hand. harddrives are prone to crashing and i for one would hate to lose a movie i just paid $15.00 to download gone because my computer got hit by a virus or the harddrive died.

I think the issue is prices! People aren't rushing into this cuz the prices are still too high for HDTV's and Blu-Ray players. It's been already atleas a good year since HDTV's have stood out on the market and people are still not rushing into it. When digital cable will kick in and prices drop, people will be surely changing over to HD on everything! Not to mention that OLED is starting to come out, but that's only in a couple of years...

And as for downloading, well personnally I would like to have the real deal in my hands then an eletronique copy on my hard drive that could crash anytime...

upscaling a standard dvd is great but it is knowhere near as good as blu-ray, the picture is sharper and the sound is awesome, especially if you watch a blockbuster with special effects.
also downloading is a good idea to a point as you need to rely on a harddrive to store them which are prone to breakdown as we have all found out at some point

I have a large DVD collection, a standard DVD player, and an upconversion player. I'm one of the people who doesn't see a need to upgrade to Blu-Ray. The only Blu-Ray player in my house will be the one that comes with the PS3 I'm about to buy. And I'll only be using it for games anyway.

I've said it enough previously so I'll just say one word now...'downloading'. THAT'S the true future of home entertainment.
