Blade Runner sequels and prequels moving forward with Warner Bros.
Alcon is negotiating to secure the rights from producer-director Bud Yorkin, who will serve as producer on future Blade Runner movies along with Kosove and Johnson. Cynthia Sikes Yorkin will co-produce. Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble, CEO's of Thunderbird Films, will serve as executive producers.
Alcon's franchise rights would be all-inclusive, but exclude rights to remake the original. The Company, however, may produce projects based on situations introduced in the original film. The project would be distributed domestically by Warner Bros. International rights are yet to be determined.
Johnson and Kosove stated: "We are honored and excited to be in business with Bud Yorkin. This is a major acquisition for our company, and a personal favorite film for both of us. We recognize the responsibility we have to do justice to the memory of the original with any prequel or sequel we produce. We have long-term goals for the franchise, and are exploring multi-platform concepts, not just limiting ourselves to one medium only."
Among its many distinctions, Blade Runner has been singled out as one of the greatest movies of all time by countless polls and media outlets, and overwhelmingly as the greatest science-fiction film of all time by a majority of genre publications.
Released by Warner Bros. almost 30 years ago, Blade Runner was adapted by Hampton Fancher and David Webb Peoples from Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and directed by Ridley Scott following his landmark Alien. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards (Best Visual Effects, and Best Art Direction).
Blade Runner was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." The film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 1993 and is frequently taught in university courses. In 2007, it was named the 2nd most visually influential film of all time by the Visual Effects Society.
Alcon's COO Scott Parish and head of business affairs David Fierson are negotiating on behalf of the Company.
Blade Runner was released June 25th, 1982 and stars Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos, M. Emmet Walsh, Daryl Hannah, William Sanderson, Brion James. The film is directed by Ridley Scott.

@bruce-ha YES there actually is a blu ray edition not sure of other versions but i seriously recommend the blu ray with all 5 versions which have a lot of bonus features on it as well, that delve into the making of the film which is really fascinating. and just to help ya out here is a link to amazon... this is the version to get
http://www.amazon.com/Runner-Five-Disc-Complete-Collectors-Blu-ray/dp/B000UBMWG4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1299210874&sr=8-1
and i completely agree to leave it alone, there are some things that should just not be tampered with, and this is one of them in my opinion.

If anyone in here has played Heavy Rain, i think you can understand why this one should be left alone. No sequels please. Leave this work of art alone.
@incmob
Yes, i can't even begin to describe how much i loved the atmosphere and design of the setting. I can't believe how i could've missed such a classic. I was literally angry with my self for having missed it all these years.
Do you guys know if there is a Blu-ray version coming out?

And what the hell are they thinking as far as story? The original was a "Paradise Lost" artsy movie, which was panned due to "ET," but was still excellent. What are they thinking???

I'm not against it, if done correctly.
However, I foresee them only screwing this up.

Hold up, an article stating there are going to be prequels and sequels to Blade Runner. Why not just announce a new film is in the works? Sometimes I swear some people are brain dead.

Well, all I can really add is that K-Man certainly had a knee-jerk reaction to the comments on this article, it's not like he owns the movie or the rights to it, nor has anyone here taken pot shots at him.
Having said that, I do agree with him about Terminator 4 sucking due to McG's involvement. Whoever thought it was a good idea to involve him in the Terminator franchise, the guy that did Charlie's Angels, shoulda been shot. So no arguments there.
In terms of boycotting The Dark Knight Rises over it being a sequel and out of principle of being against sequels, sequels, and reboot, I don't see that argument holding much water. TDKR is concluding an ongoing series that had sequels in mind to begin with. That's common knowledge. Blade Runner, while there may have been further stories in other formats after its inception, is really known as a self contained story. It also came out in the 80's, so any movies they make to add to it will seem funky (to me at least), since that look and feel most likely won't be there. If they wanted to do sequels, it should have occurred back then, and involved Harrison Ford for continuity. Doing it today is just milking it.

@K-Man first of all, you shouldnt take sh*t so personally, i was not aware blade runner was your property, man. secondly, there are many people on this forum... YES... a forum that feel that there are many properties that have been milked, f*cked, screwed and mutilated over the course of the last 20 years, by directors, writers, and producers that claimed "they were fans of the original works" that claimed they had "love" for the original works and look how most of it has turned out. YOU claim that the terminator film and also the alien franchise took a turn for the worst with the writers and the directors, however a writer and director has not even been announced on any of the proposed plans for sequels or prequels! but you defend it, did you defend indiana jones and the kingdom of the crystal skull with the same team that brought the first three as well? and how do you know they wont take that approach with the blade runner films to bring in a cheap load of talent (writing and directing) big name star, then... suprise, convert to 3d to bring in the most cash... if you want to defend something go for it... personally i cant sit here and think that you have been satisfied with everything that has come out in the last 10 years, and if that is the case, then maybe you should pull out your notepad and start writing.

K-Man
So all you guys who are automatically knocking these off as sh*t, you are not going to see The Dark Knight Rises then, right? Because according to you guys there is no way a sequel, prequel or remake could possibly be good, right?
Stop bitching. If you are really *that* against them, dont go see it. Otherwise, how the hell do you know how these are going to turn out? They could end up being as groundbreaking as the original if they get the right people behind it. And it's not like the original is getting replaced and you'll never be able to watch it again........unless it directed by George Lucas.
The only thing you should be complaining about, or worrying about, is who they put in charge of making these films.
@incmob - You need to look a little closer as to WHY those films you mentioned failed. The reason why the Terminator sequels (3 & especially 4) failed is because of the the writers and directors they hired to work on them. They hired hackjobs in place of actual talent so they could save a few dollars and have more control over them, therefore the final result was complete and utter crap. The same thing happened with Alien 4. Some people consider Alien 3 to be a complete disaster but if you watch the "making of" you come to realize it's actually a miracle that the film turned out as good as it did when you take into consideration that they didn't even have a finalized script while shooting (not to mention all the other sh*t that was taking place during the shoot). Just goes to show what a genius David Fincher really is. However, the writer who ended up writing Alien 3, before it was picked apart during shooting, was a complete and utter hackjob which, again, shows that the studio is willing to brush integrity aside as long as it stands to make a profit.
Point being, if the studio decided to actually give a sh*t about these two films and hired great writers/directors, we could *potentially* have two VERY good films on the horizon.
Stop being so damn negative. You never know how these things are going to turn out.
If you are mad at the fact that the studios and "run out" of ideas, then get your god-damn note-pads out and start writing.
