Black Panther may be Marvel's next stand-alone movie
Back in January 2011, Marvel hired Mark Bailey to write the screenplay for Black Panther. Insiders claim that the story is "fantastic," although it isn't known if the studio has reached out to any directors just yet. The project is being seen as Marvel's effort to cater to an 'urban' audience.
We reported last August that Marvel Studios slated an unspecified movie for release on May 16, 2014. While there has been no confirmation, it remains entirely possible that Black Panther may be the mystery movie in question for that slot.
The character is the chieftan of the Panther Clan in the fictional African country of Wakanda. His powers are derived from a special herb that grants him superhuman strength, speed, and stamina. Marvel has previously dropped some hints about this long-awaited project in Iron Man 2, where the map of Wakanda was briefly displayed. The shield in Captain America: The First Avenger is made from Vibranium, an element found in Wakanda.
Black Panther is in development .

Now we're gonna get political news stories on Fox News saying that the Black Panther movie is too liberal because of the name "Black Panther".

Laz Alonso is a good pick

@junior Roberts You made some good points, your right Laz Alonso would also be a very good choice, he pulled off the native accent very well in Avatar. I was almost about to say Vin Diesal just in case for those of you who don't know Vin is part black, part italian, but like Will and others he's also in his 40s.

OK.... let's be real. The names I'm seeing mentioned by some to play Black Panther are outrageous.
1- Djimon Hounsou would be a great choice... 20 years ago. I'm not hating on him. He's a great actor. But he's near 50 (and looks every year of it) and the big-screen interpretation of Black Panther should be relatively younger. I think he should still be involved in the project but not as the lead.
2- Chewitel Ejiofor is another great actor but I don't see him pulling in a big audience nor portraying a character of intense action.
3- Will Smith? I won't even get into the many reasons why this idea is wrong and I'm speaking as one of his BIGGEST fans.
4- Michael Jai White.... I'm not mad at this choice. His acting is average (sometimes over the top), but looks wise, I think he's a good choice. Could he pull of an African accent? Maybe...
5- Tyrese.... see comments I made for Michael Jai White
My #1 choice would be Laz Alonso. You may be unfamiliar with him but he was actually in Avatar and Fast and Furious (Google him). Great actor, meets the physical aspect looks wise, and has experience in action. True, he doesn't have the name power of a Robert Downey Jr but neither did Hemsworth before Thor.

Can't wait. I'd love to see Djimon Hounsou or Chewitel Ejiofor in the role. I'd say Idris Elba, but he's already in this universe.

Mutant
I want Djimon as Black Panthor and Michael Jai White as Blade.
Wesley Snipes as the big old bad guy for once.
Now tell me who would you like to see come to the big screen and not just the obvious superhero or villain and it can't be a big name.

@cheetoboy ...I'm kind of hoping Marvel Studios will get Michael Jai White to reboot Blade, i think that would be perfect casting for his martial arts skills.
Also after watching Avngers EMH and seen sum f the serious roles Chewatal Eijifor has done...he would also be perfect for T'Chaka or , if Marvel Studios brings him in sometime, for Kang the Conqueror :]

Chewatal Eijifor is alright, but I would want the Black Panther to have more badass appeal, so I'm still sticking with Djimon Hounsou, Michael Jai White, Jamie Foxx, or even Will Smith, he's getting older, but smith does attract big box office. Hmm I wonder what Denzel would be like as the Black Panther.

1-Djimon has to be in the movie one way or another, if he plays T'Challa or T'Chaka or a random African dude he MUST BE IN THE MOVIE
2-Idris Elba is Heaimdall
3-@Cheetoboy all the actors you mentioned don't seem African enough to me lol
4-I hate the word "Urban"

Chewatal Eijifor as T'challa, Djimon Hounsou as his dad. He knows martial arts in real life, and has worked with Whedon before on Serenity, so when Avengers 2 happens, he'd be a natural fit. Hounsou should be involved, but he's getting older.

Djimon hounsou must be black panther he has an awesome voice and it reminds me of T'chala on Avengers Earths mightiest Heroes on Disney XD

Wow, this sounds like a cool superhero for Marvel. Since the character is african Djimon would be a good candidate, also what about Idris Elba, Jamie Foxx, Anthony Mackie, or maybe Tyrese, to me those are some good candidates for the role. I would have almost said Will Smith, but he's getting older, plus he would probably pass on that too. While I'm at it another good question is when is the Luke Cage movie going to be out?

Bane5000
@SherlockHolmes2009 ..I've thought of it before as well...
If they go the route that BP has already been King of Wakanda for a while, i say go with Djimon for T'Chala
But if theyre gonna go full on origin story and show him as a prince then goes into exile after T'Chaka gets killed by the villian and comes back to claim the throne, they may need somone younger but i say still have Djimon play T'Chaka instead.
