'Black Nativity' Gets Thanksgiving 2013 Release Date

Fox Searchlight Pictures has announced today that their upcoming musical Black Nativity will receive a Thanksgiving release on November 27, 2013. As of now, the Disney animated comedy Frozen is the only other movie opening on that date. The Weinstein Company's Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom debuts two days later on November 29. Here's the official plot synopsis for Black Nativity.

In a contemporary adaptation of Langston Hughes' celebrated play, the holiday musical drama Black Nativity follows Langston (Jacob Latimore), a street-wise teen from Baltimore raised by a single mother, as he journeys to New York City to spend the Christmas holiday with his estranged relatives Reverend Cornell and Aretha Cobbs (Forest Whitaker and Angela Bassett). Unwilling to live by the imposing Reverend Cobbs' rules, a frustrated Langston is determined to return home to his mother, Naima (Jennifer Hudson). Langston embarks on a surprising and inspirational journey and along with his new friends, and a little divine intervention, he discovers the true meaning of faith, healing, and family.

Kasi Lemmons (The Caveman's Valentine) directs from her own screenplay, adapted from the Langston Hughes play. Tyrese Gibson, Mary J. Blige, and Nasir Jones also star in an unspecified roles.

Black Nativity was released November 27th, 2013 and stars Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, Jennifer Hudson, Tyrese Gibson, Jacob Latimore, Mary J. Blige, Nas, Vondie Curtis-Hall. The film is directed by Kasi Lemmons.
