Movie PictureAccording to Variety, Avi Lerner's Millennium Films, Taurus Entertainment and Emmett/Furla Films are mounting a remake of George A. Romero's 1985 Day of the Dead, which will be financed and distributed through Millennium.

The original pic was set in a world overrun by pesky zombies bent on extracting a group of scientists and military personnel who have holed up in an underground bunker. It was a sequel to Romero's 1968 Night of the Living Dead and 1978 Dawn of the Dead.

Rights to the original Day were held by Taurus Entertainment. Paul Mason and Jordan Rush brought the project to Emmett/Furla.

It's the second time that Emmett/Furla and Lerner have worked with Mason, who also brought Emmett/Furla remake rights for The Amityville Horror, which they set up at Dimension Films.

Randall Emmett and George Furla, along with Taurus' James Dudelson, Lerner and Millennium's Boaz Davidson, will produce Day of the Dead.

Exec producers are Taurus' Robert Dudelson, Emmett/Furla's M. Dal Walton III, Millennium's Trevor Short and Danny Dimbort as well as Mason and Rush.

Universal Pictures released a remake of "Dawn" last year, which grossed $102 million worldwide.

U will follow that with "Land of the Dead," which is written and directed by Romero and set for a June 24 release. The studio launched its promo push for that pic by screening its first 14 minutes during the Cannes Film Festival.

Taurus recently completed principal photography on a sequel to Romero's 1982 Creepshow, which was based on short stories by Stephen King.

Day Of The Dead was released July 3rd, 1985 and stars Lori Cardille, Terry Alexander, Joseph Pilato, Jarlath Conroy, Anthony Dileo Jr., Richard Liberty, Sherman Howard, Gary Howard Klar. The film is directed by George A. Romero.
