Ben Affleck to direct The Stand
The Stand, which follows a group of survivors battling each other after a man-made plague wipes out most of humanity, was already turned into a ABC miniseries in May of 1994. Since that time, many attempts have been made to turn the epic page-turner into a stand-alone feature film, but its story length has proven troublesome. At one point, even Stephen King himself declared that the novel could not be contained within a single movie.
The Stand will certainly stand as a challenge for Ben Affleck, who is embarking on his third directorial feature with Argo. Both of his previous efforts, The Town and Gone Baby Gone, went onto gain much critical praise and support.
There is no set start date for The Stand, and Ben Affleck is not yet officially signed on.
The Stand comes to theaters in 2013.

@thedude-abides -- Ha, that's the truth. He's building a huge directional line-up for himself, the real question is if he'll ultimately have the time to direct them all.

Yeh Right...Affleck isn't Speilberg or Cameron-I'm sure He'll stick to smaller budgeted Films!

This would be difficult to do in one film, so I'm thinking it will be a film series. Affleck has been doing great work as a director, and this could definitely be a big notch in his belt if he executes well.

This is great news. Ben Affleck is excellent as a director. The Town with the Dark Knight displayed a good way to perform a bank robbery. Something Takers got completely wrong. So I see nothing, but good things from this film. That's me guessing and cnt wait for a trailer.

@christina-montana - I'm thinking i was the only one ;)
@skywise - I've always liked Ben as an actor, and i do agree with you on his bad choices. To me he just didn't know who was his target audience at the time, but i'm curious to see what he does with it. He's always been talking about getting back into science fiction after Daredevil, so when i saw this i wasn't surprised as must people.

Stansfield
Great choice! He really has come a long way. Better director than actor though I still dig him as an actor. I am in agreement with most out there that this won't really work as one flick....we will see I suppose.

He is not terrioble actor but i think he made some bad choices but watching him in movies like Hollywoodland and The Town i have hope that he can come back from all that bad press. However, like @Number1Wolverine and others mentioned below he is brilliant behind the cameras. He is a talented writer as well.

He has really been redeaming himself behind the cameras. This is a huge story and one that i absolutly love. I think this is a good film for him to really cut his teeth on. I mut say, i am pretty axcisted to hear this news.

Is it just me or is Ben a better director then actor, i like him as an actor but this has awesome written all over it. This also makes me wonder how Daredevil would have been had he directed and acted in it.

Both an interesting & a good choice, I suppose. Affleck is on a role as a director, that's for sure, but this will definitely prove to be his hardest task yet. This will be much, much bigger than anything he has done before but, to be honest, I think he's ready. I'm pretty pumped to see what he does with it.....if he definitely signs on, that is.
This was originally a project that was being circled by David Yates. In fact, I heard they were in serious negotiations and were planning a couples films, possibly even a trilogy.....so the question now is: If Affleck accepts, what is Yates going to direct??? Yates also had the mobster film, Cicero, on his radar but I dont know if that is getting the green light or not. The point is, after seeing what he did with the latter Harry Potter films (which I thought were absolutely amazing), I really want Yates to do something extraordinary........and preferably in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Fiction genres.
The other question is: Will The Stand still be several films or just one very, very condensed film?

Sounds good to me. I hope to see Jeremy Renner as Stu Redman, Casey Affleck as Nick Andros, and Matt Damon as Randall Flagg. If Ben wants to be in it he should play Trashcan Man.
