Tom Hardy will star in Batman 3 in an unspecified role
The role hasn't been specified yet, and it isn't known if he will play a villain. But It will be a "lead role" in this upcoming sequel. Deadline New York did speculate that it would be a "reasonable assumption" that Tom Hardy is gearing up to play one of DC Comics iconic villains.
Tom Hardy is still attached to star in Mad Max: Fury Road, although we reported just last week that production has been delayed on this particular reboot until 2012. The actor remains attached to the project and will definitely star when the production is ready to go before cameras.
We also reported a few weeks ago that Batman 3 will start shooting in May, which still seems to be happening.
The Dark Knight Rises comes to theaters July 20th, 2012 and stars Liam Neeson, Tom Hardy, Christian Bale, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anne Hathaway, Gary Oldman, Aidan Gillen, Marion Cotillard. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan.

I forgot to say, Tom Hardy is just so good to watch, you guys need to check out 'THE TAKE',he plays a gangsta in the movie, brilliant. Whatever role this guy is in he kills it and honestly think he can give Leo a run for his movie, but then again Leo is a legend and i dont know why Nolan has put in in the Dark Knight series, maybe he's too big.

@Josh...not a bad idea, specialy the conclusion, that way hed really have to be a shadow in the night fighting crime while people believing batman is dead and sightings of him just being rumors...
I think Hardy should become Hush, they could make him Thomas Elliot, a wealthy friend or rival Bruce had in college before he dropped out, as he mentioned in Begins, thats come to town but unbeknownst to Bruce, Thomas has obsessed over Bruce's life over the years while his own wealth has diminshed and has since become the criminal Hush, whos jelousy towards Bruce's prosperity and new fascination for the character of The Batman, drives him to make an example of both, not knowing theyre the same man...Yet :]

I vote Riddler and Hush, with elements of The Dark Knight returns (i.e., Batman being hunted by the police and going underground with faking his own death in the end). This should be a great conclusion.

No more origin stories on Batman, Superman, or Spider-Man. These three are well enough known beyond the scope of comics that origin movies are not necessary.

The Narrator: The Better Man
@Sly, thanks. and yes, I agree in going with a more personal tone. TDK's scale was very wide, and as said by Nolan, it wasn't so much about Batman, but about all of Gotham. So I would not mind in the least if we now took a more personal approach and followed the Caped Crusader on his journey. Especially now that he is on the run. I am definitely not looking for a lot of action or anything big from this next film. I just want it to come across as truth. Other than that, I am fine.
As for the series concluding, I believe you're right. People WILL look back at this trilogy as the quintessential Batman film series, and it will be a base line/mile-stone for all comic book films (who wish to take a turn to the realistic). As for the next series, which hopefully comes 10 years or so down the line, I hope it does go with a different route and follows a more noir type feel. After all, as you mentioned, Batman started in DC's detective stories, and he would really fit into a "Who done it" like film. That would be great to see ,and as mentioned we would not need a origin story retold on film. Begins got it down A-Okay. Overall, I think we all can't wait for this next film.
@bruce, well I honestly could see some major tweaks to Croc's character which would force him to become believable. But I wouldn't want him in it anyways. Too much tweaking and material changing only goes so far until it becomes ridiculous.
@Dave, we all know that Nolan said that. However, I was simply mentioning how and why Dick Greyson COULD fit into the Universe. Definitely not a necessity, nor would I want it forced, but just an example.
Sorry for any typos folks. I am in a hurry.

Hardy is a good pick to be in it. Nolan is the man to beat in hollywierd! I just don't want him to put the whole FN cast from Inception in it. What if Jim Carrey reprised it again with Nolan's direction? I could see him turn it around and modernize that character. Carrey is all around. It would be interesting. I think Hardy will be the Riddler though.

@Narrator: I like your reasoning on Grayson, and your take on how #3 should be different and unexpected in style.
However, Nolan mentioned that: "Without getting into specifics, the key thing that makes the third film a great possibility for us is that we want to finish our story. And in viewing it as the finishing of a story rather than infinitely blowing up the balloon and expanding the story . . . I'm very excited about the end of the film, the conclusion, and what we've done with the characters. My brother has come up with some pretty exciting stuff. Unlike the comics, these things don't go on forever in film and viewing it as a story with an end is useful. Viewing it as an ending, that sets you very much on the right track about the appropriate conclusion and the essence of what tale we're telling. And it hearkens back to that priority of trying to find the reality in these fantastic stories. That's what we do."
By mentioning that he's not expanding the balloon on the story and is concluding the characters' journey, then it's unlikely that WB will be able to spin a 4th film off his franchise. They'd have to recast almost everybody, as they've almost all said they'd leave the series when Nolan did. So if anything, there won't be the possibility for a sequel to #3. And no, that doesn't mean that Batman has to die. They nicely ended Joker's portrayal without killing him off. And even if Heath Ledger lived, Joker proved his point about why he and Batman could keep at it forever: their phiosophies are totally opposite: Batman stands for justice, and Joker stands for chaos through the ammunition that is the citizens gullibility, stupidity, and morals. Thus, neither's job would end. Any sequel continuing that battle would just be ripping off "TDK." Thus, major characters need not die to totally conclude that series.
Although, given Nolan's trilogy is so far the ultimate definition of Batman's origins as well as his rogues gallery, then it seems even with a solid non-cliffhanger conclusion that fans will look back at these films decades from now as the ultimate Batman tales. There'd be no point in retelling the origin story after this, such that a fourth film would be the first in a new line of films, and given what Nolan's done with the characters here, then filmmakers would know where to take the series too. Which characters to adapt and how to adapt them. A new trilogy without the origin story, as it was so well told, and so well understood by millions (given the box office receipts) that they need not waste time going over it again. Just go with new characters in new directions. I'd love to see a "Long Halloween" type who dunnit murder mystery featuring characters like the original Penguin & Riddler whom weren't overly comic booky characters, but in Penguin's case, a corrupt bureaucrat with twisted psychological issues, and Riddler as a narcissist who's far less confident than Joker. Go back to the source material and milk it for what its worth. Such as making Batman the real detective that he started out as. For "Begins" to me felt like a prologue, and I expected a film less intense than "TDK" that'd encompass something like what I just described as it'd be less action packed, and more noir in tone and style which fits with Batman's early incarnation, like a detective story. Such that "Begins" had Batman doing everything out of necessity. But I figured there'd be a film where he'd make all the leaps and get the learning curve on his own about the city's corruption prior to something like "TDK" which feels like the second act of a trilogy with a third act's pacing. However, given "Begins" would be seen as a prologue in that sense, then "TDK" would technically be #3, but would still feel like #2 as it is. But you get my drift in feeling out the story and tone. Hence why I figure the real #3 won't be overly epic or action packed with a lightning pace, but a psychological thriller with deeply personal issues. Encompassing themes like "The Man Who Falls" (which Nolan was inspired by) and "Hush."
But that's just me.

That seems a bit exaggerated, just because Robin was sh**t in the old movies doesn't mean he could bring something good to the franchise. If you do it right, you could make it work... and if someone is capable of that it's Nolan. But anyways, it is the way it is. If they say so then nothing we do will change that.
Ontopic though, have you guys heard Mark Millars latest news on Tom Hardy? That he will play as Killer Croc =P
You should take it as a weak rumor but a rumor nonetheless could lead up to the truth..

@Narrator (continued discussion over Gordon Levitt as Robin)
Personally, i think that it would work perfectly. I do believe it would feel a bit forced but look at Harvey Dents character in TDK and how he transformed throughout the movie. I know, if you think about it now it seems too forced but in the movie Nolan would make it work. I never thought he'd make the Joker and Twoface bond work so well in TDK but look at what a masterpiece it became. Let me ask you a question, could a character like killer croc be turned into something out of Nolans batman universe? If so, how do you think he would make it work?
Is it just me or do you guys get the impression that Tom Hardy would make for a great Black Mask?

I AM FRATSON
@Narrator - I agree with the different direction. With Batman on the run, everyone in Gotham will have it out for him. He is the vigilante that he is supposed to be. ALL the cops, except Gordon obv, will be gunning for him. This could set up a nice possibility of, if the Penguin gets adapted properly, running for the now vacant mayor position. Gothams "new" hero. However, it honestly needs retooled so it doesnt seem like Returns. I like your idea for Dick. He could be adapted to just become Nightwing versus Robin. I doubt that happens but I wouldnt be against it. I personally just dont care for Robin as a character. Having him become nightwing can still incorporate Bruce training him as Raz did for Bruce, just making him his own and not a sidekick. And as you said and a lot of us have said before, I want Nolan to end HIS trilogy perfectly and leave the door open for a new director to come in and expand upon it. I believe with a new trilogy you can bring the Joker back as well, just with Heaths death, having him recasted in the third is too soon.

The Narrator: The Better Man
@Fratson, agreed. I don't get why people keep saying JGL and Depp for the Riddler. It's such a predictable casting choice, nor do I really think they embody the Riddler well enough. Both of them are favorites of mine, but we don't cast favorites, we cast who we think can do the character right.
And people, although riddler would work, why do you settle for that. The Joker borrowed aspects from The Riddler in TDK. If they were to put The Riddler in the film, it would be too soon, and the audience would get a sense of character recycling. Just like TDK was a totally different direction from BB, lets go in a totally new direction for B3. Make sense? Lets not go in expecting another TDK. It's gonna be different, and hopefully it won't focus on topping TDK. It will simply focus on ending the series well, while keeping it open for other directors to what needs to be done.

The Narrator: The Better Man
@Sly, I see your point. However, its possible with Nolan and Co. tweaking the story. He could be Dick, as himself, and is suddenly the new D.A. He's young and new to the ball game. He has a family, and say he looses it or something (similar to his parents death in the comics) and that sets him up as a Nightwing type character, but never in tights. Simply out for justice and revenge. He becomes what Dent possibly couldn't. I could honestly see that happening further down the road. An idea.

JGL will not be the riddler for the sole fact he resembles HL facial features way to much.
@slysnide - I agree with the riddler, I think with Nolan saying the Penguin would be tricky, I could def see him being adapted nicely by Nolan.
@cell - you havent seen it yet?? I highly recommend Bronson. Its different but Hardy puts on a performance in it thats for sure.
Final thought: When Nolan tapped Heath to be the Joker and adapted him in the way that he did, I do not believe anyone thought he would outdo Jack (I did but thats neither here nor there at this point). Nolan and team can adapt his characters, no matter how far out there. The penguin could def be adapted, as could croc. With Batman taking the heat for Harveys death, Im curious as to see what direction it goes. I can totally see the Penguin being a central villian.

It's interesting that Nolan thinks that Penguin would be tricky. Given that, and the fact that the original comic book Penguin is far more interesting than any of his filmed adaptations, then he'd be a neat addition to the saga. I don't see JGL as Riddler though.

Hush would be great. We'd be able to see a lot of flashbacks to Bruce's childhood, giving him some more layers of character and self-exploration, along with having a rival who's roots were planted even before Batman. On top of that, you could easily incorporate the Riddler (obviously) and maybe even have some flashbacks with Crane as well. There's a lot of really deep plots you could formulate with that.

Tom Hardy as either Hush,Black Mask or Ridller would be good, but if hes not The Riddler, still get Joseph Gordon Levitt in the film also to play him and that would be more of an awesome cast
But if Hardy isnt any of the characters i mentioned, and hes supposidly gonna be an iconic DC villian...who else is left...
