Avatar Takes in Another $16 Million on Tuesday!
The film's tuesday haul was the second highest Tuesday gross for a non-opening film and third-highest Tuesday gross overall. Avatar's gross total for its five-day run stands at $109.5 million, and if these incredible weekday grosses are any indication, this film looks to be sticking around for quite a long haul.
Overall, when calculating in international grosses the film has taken in over $300 million at the worldwide box office.
Avatar was released December 18th, 2009 and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel Moore, Giovanni Ribisi, Michelle Rodriguez, Laz Alonso. The film is directed by James Cameron.

@Esorekim: WTF does being a virgin have to do with it? That makes your whole comment immature, just the weight of that end bit. FYI, it wasn't until "Star Wars" (1977) was released that JC quit his trucker job for the movie business. He was already a 23yr old college drop out, so if that doesn't seem to say you can start from anywhere and get in on talent then I don't know what does. Point being, this site's purpose is to essentially blog about movies/television and their developments because we have no lives. Or at least we're all missing an escape from it that's free of charge. So why complain about us utilizing the site for its purpose? If you don't want to debate, then don't. Just drop a line and let it go. However if you want to, then by all means, share & enjoy the debate/arguments.

You guys are complete morons, why can't you just watch a film that is designed to be entertaining and take it as that, without having to talk so much crap. This film is the biggest grossing film of all time, I haven't even heard anyone say it is the best film of all time. The general consensus is that it has the best special effects ever made which is in itself a milestone. Besides I doubt any of you guys are smarter than James Cameron, haven't you noticed he gets on with making ground breaking films rather than talking crap like you lot... plus he has probably had sex before and isn't a virgin like you lot! I expect some stupid know it all comments back from you, but deep down you know your virgins so read this and weep losers!

Hiddenstranger stop. You have a flawed understanding of film which I think is crippled by an overtly conservative/narrow/generalized view of life.
So in the 15 years or so it took JC to create this film, he was more concerned w/ pleasing some 'hiddenstranger' using a library pc at a comunity college than his own creative dignity? U obviously have never experienced creative foresight, or even the slightest whiff of the frredom to use it.

Masta, just because a majority is doing something doesn't excuse the fact that imagination is being trampled upon. In this age, its all about bringing in the biggest box office number, and every director of today knows they don't have to actually work hard as long as they give it some spackel and and a bit of flashy speed scenes to keep their ADD viewers occupied. Lets agree to accept that filmakers and screenwriters have hit the invisible wall in their attempts to entertain us as an audiance, it sounds as if your already agreeing with me anyway.

Maybe no one told you hiddenstranger but the same tired plot functions and characters have been remade since cinema began. Like sports, there are a lot of copycats out there. Unfortunately, u or I havent seen as many hidden gem movies as most veteran directors, so we can't identify every deliberate sampling of ancient film.
Sounds like you've missed out on alot of good movies the last decade or so. The cursing and violence prolly scare you off, I understand, dif generation. However, if u truly put in the time to research you'll find great films with fresh takes on plot and new situations for characters. Maybe subtitles arent your thing, but sometimes an american director will make a worthwhile movie too. Sometimes...

The story may not be original, sure, but it is for some people. Some stories repeat themselves because the younger generation have no clue about what's been done in the past sometimes. Take it from me, stranger. If you haven't seen it yet, you ought to pass judgment until after you have. It's a fun ride and the fictional culture is a real treat to watch.

lol Masta, You and your precious butthurt reactions are adorable! From what it sounds like, you've managed to come off as quite a child! When Aliens and T2 made their debute, it was original for its time, but now these days we live in a generation where its all been done before and thats what every screenwriter and director has taken to heart it seems as I've watched sh*t film after sh*t film come out. Having watched the trailer (which concidently shows pretty much everything you are to expect in this film) why bother? Very few to no movies these days have a plot that hasn't been driven into the ground over and over and over again, and that itself pisses me off. I'm basically watching the alzheimers of filmmaking take place and rot the brains of the generations next to recieve. If I went to movies merely for fight scenes, then I'm sure I'd of just been drawn in by flashy moves by Jason Stathem or Jackie Chan. Oh and I'm glad you decided to toss in your personal political viewpoints which in turn labeled yourself into narrowminded catagories.

Tell me Im wrong but arent some of the fight scenes in Avatar just as, if not entirely more epic than anything JC has done in the past?

Hidden stranger (what does that mean anyway? Im nervous for the children u live close to), by the simple fact u referenced Aliens and T2 I can tell story really isnt your primary objective (Even tho the second terminator doesnt lack too much in that department). That's too bad when watching a movie, seeing as how most of them (Well half nowadays) contain what is called a plot. Are u listening Iamf*gman? So Stranger, having not even seen the movie, what the hell are talking about?
Or do you work for some anti-green/ pro-republican faction hellbent on using their hard drives to protect this country from people who would rather have an open mind about such topics as nature conservation? And no, we arent tlking about global warming.

lord why is this cheesefest taking in so much money? I suppose if you make visuals eyecatching enough, every braindead fool will go see it. I cannot entertain the idea of seeing this film because of how truly overdone the plot of this movie is. Man goes undercover on misson from government to alien planet, man falls in love with girl and then decides to "do whats right" and fight for the enemy. It's just too cliche for words, not to mention painfully obvious how the ending will result. If I was hangcuffed to a chair with a gun to my head, I'd still have to mull it over in my min if I REALLY would consider seeing this movie. I expected more from a director like James Cameron, who gave us immortal films such as T2 and Aliens. I guess I should have lowered my expectations, considering the day and age we live in.

Oh and tell Eli Roth Im still looking for that film where he recieves critical acceptance.

t's true.
Avatar is like Dances with Wolves, Fern Gully, bits of Pocahontas, and a couple others, but you know what?
Avatar is better than all of these films COMBINED!
Not to mention one of the better Sci-Fi films of the 2000s.
Bravo I say.
It may not be a masterpiece, but Cameron has shown us twice that he can make a better sequel than an origin story.
Bring on Avatar 2! :P

BTW for everyone. Japan is having the film open on Wednesday and China has is opening on Jan 2nd Japan and China are known for having a love for big budget, high graphic movies. So this should make a killing over there. For the movie to pretty much have broken even in 3 days, while missing those two HUGE markets says something. As for story, -comrade- has it right. The story is simple and we have heard it before. But a lot of movies are like that. Is Star Wars nothing but a futuristic western? Its the acting, the progression and the experience that creates this movie. James Cameron made it clear that the visuals would be amazing, nobody has argued that. Just because the story didn't have your head spinning doesn't make it poor. I felt invested in the relationship of the characters cuz it was an easy story to feel for and relate to. Go see it in IMAX 3D, seriously amazing. Great movie

I commend cell for his comment, because they're usually meaningless and annoying, but I think that arguing about whether or not this film is a financial success is a moot point. We didn't make it, it doesn't matter to us how much it makes except in curiosity. So I'm glad we're debating it as cinema and not as a market player.

I've also heard that the acting was appropriate for the film in that it was not overdone, and while certain character elements might have seemed cliche, as an ensemble piece it works well. I believe you already mentioned that you liked Sam Worthington, so I won't touch on that. While elements of the story and its dynamics are somewhat unoriginal, that doesn't make it a bad story. As Arundhati Roy says, the greatest stories are those you can hear again and again, already knowing the ending, who dies, who lives, who loves, whose heart gets broken, and step into at any point feeling comfortable. It's an old story, but it's also a classic, and it was told with a sweeping majesty lost on most epics. I think Clash of The Titans will turn out much the same way, but that won't degrade the film's quality any. This is one of those things where a lot of people were predisposed not to like the film, and not wanting to appear silly or hysterical, they went in with the intentions of sticking by their "Avatar sucks," guns, without any iota of desire to have their minds changed. Forgive me here, because these are generalizations, but at least I'm acknowledging that I'm making them. *I* thought the film was great, because the performances weren't overbearing, and the story was one I could find a comfortable place in and be entertained by. Plus, knowing what goes into digital animation (not a requirement to appreciate this film, but it helps) I was astonished by what I saw. Greatest film ever? No. A success as a piece of art and as iconic American film (I know Cameron's Canadian, but I consider him a very American filmmaker because of his style and background)? Most definitely.

The film was released in traditional 2-D and 3-D formats, along with an IMAX 3D release in selected theaters. Avatar is officially budgeted at $237 million;other estimates put the cost at $280 - $310 million to produce and an estimated $150 million for marketing.
it grossed an estimated $27 million on its opening day and an estimated $77,025,481 domestically its opening weekend.
Worldwide, the film grossed an estimated $232,180,000 its opening weekend, the ninth-largest opening-weekend gross of all time, and the largest for a non-franchise, non-sequel and original film.

I saw this film twice. The first I wanted to see what the hype was about concerning the amount of money and time it took to make this film and see what James Cameron was thinking when he got Sam Worthington the role of Marcus in T4. After seeing it the first time I was completely blown away and knew I counldnt write a complete review. I saw it the second time today and was still blown away. Absolutely a great film and a great experience.

This is a comment board, and until they offer some kind of user moderation I can speak freely.
You can keep saying there was nothing good about the film (except visuals)...but in order to offer any legitimate argument you need to specifically target what other people liked about the film that you didn't like and offer points as to why those parts were inadequate. Otherwise, just admit that you simply didn't like it, have no good reason, and move on.
Your use of "therefor(e)" is incorrect; but that's just semantics.

*sshole? wow, somebody has issues
as to why it sucked... maybe it was because it offered me nothing more then "spectacular" visuals. back to the point though... as i have said before, visuals mean JACKSH*T if the movie itself is not interesting enough to keep me awake to actually witness these visuals. other than Worthington doing a good job, there was not another thing about this movie that had me interested enough to where i left the movie theater pleased with what i had just watched. i can think of two other times in which i wanted to get up and leave during a movie... this was the third, therefore that is why it sucked
