Avatar Surpasses Titanic as the Highest Grossing Domestic Film!
The mark surpasses Cameron's previous film, Titanic, which held the domestic record for 12 years with the seemingly-untouchable mark of $600.8 million. The increase in ticket sales and the surcharge for 3D viewing was instrumental in this record falling in so short a time.
Cameron's film still doesn't hold one all-time box office mark though: Gone With the Wind still holds the all-time record for total tickets sold, a record that has stood since the film's release in 1939.
Avatar was released December 18th, 2009 and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel Moore, Giovanni Ribisi, Michelle Rodriguez, Laz Alonso. The film is directed by James Cameron.
Titanic comes to theaters April 6th, 2012 and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane, Kathy Bates, Frances Fisher, Gloria Stuart, Bill Paxton, Bernard Hill. The film is directed by James Cameron.
Gone With the Wind was released December 15th, 1939 and stars Thomas Mitchell, Barbara O'Neil, Vivien Leigh, Evelyn Keyes, Ann Rutherford, George Reeves, Fred Crane, Hattie McDaniel. The film is directed by Victor Fleming, George Cukor, Sam Wood.

I went to the movie theater, choosen Avatar just by chance (I liked the name), knew nothing about it before (what about "highly advertised"!?) They were playing Up In the Air, The Blind Side, and It'S Complicated at the same time. Loved Avatar the first time I saw it, went for more times. By the way, they are playing now The Book of Eli, Edge of Darkness, Legion, and so on. You should know this if you guys live in the U.S. still, Avatar had no competition. It made all that $ because it's a worldwide event, not only an U.S. only. Now, everybody goes out to see Avatar, check the web and the movie official sites if you don't believe.

In my humble opinion, Cameron's films can be ranked how good they are in this order:
1. Aliens
2. T2
3. Terminator
4. The Abyss
5. True Lies
6. Piranha 2
7. Avatar
8. Titanic
What do the rest of you think?

I really don't give a sh*t anymore. I don't even think this is his best movie. And the 3-D is over rated. The fact it wasn't released in the summer when it would of had competition plays a big factor here also. Lets face it, other that Avatar, what has been released that is actually worth going to see lately? Anybody into movies would rather watch Avatar 3 or 4 times than go to see the likes of Alvin and the chipmunks.

it kinda still is a big deal, if u do take inflation into account then u should also take into account that the casual movie goer has become fewer meaning that this movie was able to attract enough ppl willing to pay double wut it cost twelve years ago that it actually surpassed Titanic. thats still impress not to mention the current economic state and the amount of unemployed.

This isn't that big of a deal, considering the fact that tickets to the movies have doubled in price in the twelve years since Titanic came out. I am glad the movie made enough money to justify a sequel, but Cameron will need to create a better plot if he wishes to see similar results.

Well done Mr. Cameron. While it wasn't a terrible movie I'll have to agree with Annoying Film Critic down there and say it definitely is overrated. The sequel, hopefully, will be better. And it probably will considering the fact that T2 was way better than the first Terminator.

No more 3D films, character interactions, a strong story line make a film not 3 bloody D. Every time, there is a 3D film, I will not watch it period unless its a normal picture.
