The fantasy blockbuster's closest competitor, the 2008 Batman sequel The Dark Knight, sold about 16 million copies in its first three weeks in stores.Avatar was released on DVD and Blu-ray on April 22.
The movie from director James Cameron already holds the record for the biggest film release at global box offices with more than $2.7 billion in ticket sales.
About 80% of its box office gross came from 3-D screenings of the film. Fox plans to release a 3-D version of Avatar on DVD sometime next year.
Avatar was released December 18th, 2009 and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel Moore, Giovanni Ribisi, Michelle Rodriguez, Laz Alonso. The film is directed by James Cameron.
