Avatar Re-release Planned for This Summer and Titanic 3D Targeted for Spring 2012?

James Cameron discusses plans for both monumental films
James Cameron discusses plans for both monumental films
In a story from The Hollywood Reporter, James Cameron and Fox are talking about rereleasing Avatar primarily in 3D theaters late this summer. There is even some discussions about adding additional scenes that weren't in the film when it was released this past December.

Cameron and the studio are talking about a rerelease because they think they could have brought in even more money if they been able to keep the digital and Imax 3D screens that they gave up when Disney brought out Alice in Wonderland in 3D on March 5.

It looks like as much as 40 minutes of additional material that wasn't in the theatrical cut could be in this new version.

Cameron has stated that he had 10-12 minutes of extra scenes that he took out and they could quickly be put through postproduction and be ready to add to a director's cut for another theatrical release. It could also be an extra on the eventual DVD release.

Imax theaters only allow for 170 minutes in analog. Cameron didn't know about this when he put together his original cut. He could put in 10 minutes to the 160-minute film and still be in all the Imax locations. Many feel this is more plausible than than trying to add 40 minutes.

Avatar has pulled in more than 80% of its domestic business in 3D theaters. This actually represented less than half of its runs. Avatar has grossed $2.6 billion worldwide. It expanded 3D globally and broke records everywhere.

"The word we're getting back from exhibitors is we probably left a couple hundred million dollars on the table as a result." Cameron said.

The director went on to talk about the 3D release of Titanic. This had been talked about for some time but Cameron actually gave a release time frame.

"We're targeting spring of 2012 for the release (of a 3D version of Titanic), which is the 100 year anniversary of the sailing of the ship."

Avatar was released December 18th, 2009 and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel Moore, Giovanni Ribisi, Michelle Rodriguez, Laz Alonso. The film is directed by James Cameron.

@Slysnide: I've seen Avatar and Alice both once, and personally I would go see Avatar again before I'd see Alice. It's a better movie and the 3D is better. For a movie that was so hyped for being 3D, Alice did a pretty poor job of using it, IMO. I wished I would have watched it in standard 2D.

only the brief 10 minutes or so of "Titanic's" final plunge would be worth seeing in 3D, but definitely NOT the whole 186 minute film. I'm glad to see others are agreeing with me about how greedy these guys are getting. I mean god forbid that Tim Burton's unique film snags a few IMAX screens away from a film that's had a 2.5 month head start over Wonderland. And think of all the other regular IMAX movies that'll lose much deserved screenings to rereleases.

James is acting like a fool, it's not just the film it's also about the toys, video games, posters, books. He's sitting on a landmine, not to make things worse but he's returning to the Alien Universe as well.

There's more of the film, why can't he just edit it all together and release it once. I know it's been released, this idea is really stupid. Just pull a LOTR idea, extended edition and release it on DVD, HD, 3D HD if that ever happens.

Which do you prefer a 3D theater with 40 minute add or IMAX-3D with 10 minute add only? I wish there's an IMAX3D that rolls a 3:20 hours of a movie with free popcorn set each hour.

To see Titanic in the new 3D format would be worth seeing in the theater again but Avatar Has had its run. As if they won't make a ton of money on blu-ray and dvd sales.

i suppose the $2 billion+ from avatar and the $1 billion+ for titanic obviously isn't enough money for these people, and then theres the dvd and blu ray sales.

@Josh: That's my point, Tim Burton's flick won't be there very long, so to say this decision in regards to rereleasing "Avatar" is due to snagging stolen profits--despite what they've gotten--then they're clearly milking it for all it's worth. They just wanna make it sound like their grosses are getting damaged by Wonderland, when in fact THEY will be impeding on future 3D releases this summer, as there undoubtedly will be more. Not to mention numerous docuemtary flicks IMAX puts out every summer. So for the guys who've produced the second highest grossing film ever (Accounting for infaltion), then to come out and say they need more $$$ rather than just to please fans is pretty classless as they're bragging about how much more $$$ they can rake in before they release their 3D version of "Titanic," which won't be that good anyway since it wasn't really made with 3D in mind, and only half hour or so of that film would work for it. Hence they're $$$ hounds right now. Utterly ridiculous.

@Marko85: It's unfair to compare Avatar to Moon, because Avatar is more fantasy than sci-fi. And besides, Moon was hardly original. It just borrowed its themes from other (better) movies like 2001 and Solyaris.

AVATAR is so overrated and stupid movie, which is is insult to all people evan with inteligence bellow average..it has weak plot, bad dialoge...and cartonish cgi...i`m truly amazed how quickly become a segmet of pop - culture, which is only a proof how no one should underestimed a stupidity of mases...if you want a great sf...try watching Moon, a movie which stimulates brain with quality writing and acting, and not damageing your eyes and brain with shallow demagolgy sh*ty cgi and rip of of a pochahontas story..but that is just me...

In my opinion, they should put as much of the additional footage that is complete and of the same quality as the original release in Avatar before putting it back out there. If they can't put it in Imax because of this then f*ck Imax, I thought that the digital 3D was just as good, aside from the sound. I'd be pissed if they put it back out with only 10 more minutes added to it, and if thats the plan then its kinda f*cked up. Then everyone who wants to see it extended film can, and those who hate Avatar can go watch whatever the hell else they want and maybe they can stop bitching one of theses days.
