If the numbers hold up, the film will have broken the record for a December opening weekend, just edging out the 2007 film I Am Legend, which took in $77.2 million on its opening weekend. It was originally reported here yesterday that Avatar took in an estimated $73 million on opening weekend.
James Cameron's Avatar opened in 3,452 theaters this past weekend, with 2,052 theaters playing the film in the 3D format.
Avatar was released December 18th, 2009 and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel Moore, Giovanni Ribisi, Michelle Rodriguez, Laz Alonso. The film is directed by James Cameron.

@Deaner, you are a f*ckin moron.. James Cameron wrote the whole script of avatar in 1991. Fern Gully didnt come out till 1992. He didnt release it till now because he didnt want to butcher "HIS" idea of how it should look with low grade CGI. Get your facts right dipsh*t.

Deaner: and The Departed is a remake of Infernal Affairs. Who gives a f*ck? It's still a great movie.

Ever seen Fern Gulley? look it up at imdb.com
It's a cartoon set in a lush jungle, where a man gets transformed into one of the native pixies, befriends them and the local (flying) wildlife, is accepted as one them, realizes the error in human slash-and-burn tactics, and joins in the battle against the machines to save the rainforest?
This is the EXACT same plot, intended for 6-10 year olds minds, but with better graphics. That is IT. James Cameron came up with the idea for this movie while watching Fern Gulley with his grandkids.

No Huntsman, Avatar is better than those other movies you listed. It's also better than 90% of the movies that were released this year too.

Huntsman
Comrade another person fooled by the hype and effects, and wants to insult people when someone doesn't like what they like. If that makes you feel better about yourself, go right ahead.
Now is Avatar better than the movies I listed no. Independence Day and Spiderman 3 are better movies. Independence Day had a ok story, fun characters, and really good special effects. Spiderman 3 had a decent, good effects, but the characters sucked because they put to many into the movie, limiting character time. Still both those movies were better than Avatar, at least they were entertaining.
I'm glad you know it's not one of the greatest movies of all time, but you still think it's going to be a classic. Please don't tell me your putting this movie on the level of such movies as Aliens, Apocalypse Now, The Silence Of The Lambs, Predator, and The Thing. Now those are classics, Avatar isn't one of those.

Huntsman is even stupider than Newkill for making those comparisons. THis isn't the greatest movie of all time, but it's a damn sight better than the sh*t he rattled off.
Ten years from now, when this is a classic, y'all will just be the idiots who hate the movie for no reason.

what is the big deal about the story. Hello people! this is action movie...I mean the acting in New Moon sucked balls and they had real people on the damn screen. Transformers story was complete crap with the whole transformer afterlife and I dont hear people dissing that. This movie rocked! It was a complete original..something I see people are not used to anymore and the effects are mindblowing. I loved the romance element mixed with the actions. Here's hoping for a Avatar 2, Im looking forward to seeing what next for Jake and Neyteri...i mean its a shame but they had more chemistry than freaking Edward and Bella!

also Alvin and Chipmunks is another 20th Century Fox release this week. This was done to leverage against Avatar, if the movie was to take a hit. Alvin and the Chipmunks made 360 million dollars! and the cost was just 60 million, a whopping 300 million extra! The sequel is around the same budget and will easily cross the 250 million mark again, thus giving 20th century fox, the distributors for both Avatar and Alvin and Chipmunks, enough reason to smile and be relaxed. Overall the combined collections from both these movies and in the world market, will garuntee that the company walks away with healthy profits. These guys are all pretty smart folks. Yes things can go horribly wrong and we have seen how big budget movies massively flop, but i think this time they got this right. The timing, the budgets, the risk, the international exposure, everything combined is going to make all of this easily a profitable December venture.

Movie made a spectacular 170 million on the opening weekend in the international market. That is huge. On top of that the entire East Coast was under a severe storm past few days and many people did not go out. The movie will continue to make a good money for the next few weeks. The international market will pool in over 300 million and the domestic market will cross 250 million as well. Whether you like the movie or not, has nothing to do with the actual numbers. On top of that a movie like "New Moon" for example was pretty lame, but the numbers were good because of their target audience in girls. Avatar is a very intelligent, futuristic and spectacular visuals. The point is to stimulate imagination. We forget that we are on a planet suspended in space. Our future is space exploration and colonization and eventual cosmic voyages to distant stars in the next 500 to 1000 years. Cameron should be applauded for taking such a risk and making this so grand. The story perhaps will not excite everyone and that is fine. A movie like Dark Knight in my opinion was amazing, but millions actually did not even like the plot, the dark theme and the visuals. There can never be 100% consensus on these things. so relax guys, either enjoy the movie or watch something else.

Just got out of this movie... (Semi-spoiler) I have no doubt it will make money, it's a given. Honest, and my own opinion... It's Dances with Wolves, meets an alien race, meets an alien world. Visually, it was stunning. Was it believable graphics, not really, but there were times you're drawn into it. Yes, you should probably at least see this once in 3D. Hands down, better than anything we've seen so far with CGI, but it still doesn't make this a great movie. Wasn't bad, but I'll stick to Dance w/ Wolves if I want this story... again, just my opinion. Sorry, James Cameron... I think I've spent all the money I'm going to on this one and probably catch it again when it comes to DVD/BRay.

Of course this movie is going to make a bunch of money, any one who doubted that is a fool. It still doesn't change the fact that it's no a good movie. Many average or bad movies make a lot of money, from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Spider-Man 3, Indiana Jones 4, Independence Day to Twister and many other movies. Does it change the fact that they weren't very good movies hell no. People now a days are easily fooled by loud explosions, great special effects, and the over hyping of a movie.

Amazing that this number is that big being all the small towns our company owns did very little business on this film. I mean, little business. It was an average gross in the small towns, while the larger towns was ok, nothing great. Just ok. Question is, will it hold up? I still think it falls fast..
