Avatar is #3!
The Fox-distributed film just beat Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest which made $1.07 billion worldwide in 2006. It is now aiming for the second-top grosser, New Line Cinema's The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King which grabbed $1.12 billion worldwide in 2003.
At present Avatar has made $1.1 billion through Tuesday. That includes $367.5 million domestically and $731.2 million overseas.
Titanic, directed by Cameron and distributed domestically by Paramount and internationally by Fox, is the number one film with $1.84 billion.
Avatar was released December 18th, 2009 and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel Moore, Giovanni Ribisi, Michelle Rodriguez, Laz Alonso. The film is directed by James Cameron.

Well it just might pass up Return of the King (sadly). But it won't pass Titanic. Funny because Avatar and Titanic are obviously focused on spectacle and visual wonderment first, story second, and when I say story I mean with a decent story to keep it running without being a stupid simply fx movie. The man knows what he's doing and sadly damn near the world is buying into it. Well done Cameron. well done indeed.

I doubt it will top Titanic. Either way, it will be nice to see James Cameron in the number 1 and number 2 slot.

AnnoyingFilmCritic
Domestically, in the United States, Avatar (as of Jan.3, '10) is only ranked #15 in the All Time grossing movies...at $352 million. #1 Titanic is $600.8 million #2 $ The Dark Knight is 533.3 million #3 Star Wars is $460.9...
Again, this movie is all visual spectacle (amazing in 3D), but, starving in the story & character departments.
Why isn't there an hourly Avatar box office update, with Twitter commentary by accountants? (sarcasm)
