"When Political Animals finishes shooting, see if you can follow Weaver's schedule: she goes right into a new Christopher Durang play for a short run at Lincoln Center. Then she films Avatar 2, Avatar 3, and Avatar 4 with James Cameron. That's right: they're making three sequels to the blue 3D phenom all at the same time. Weaver says she has no idea how long it will take, or how it's going to work. 'I just show up,' she said."
Our report from May also revealed that the director was only making Avatar movies and documentaries from now on. Producer Jon Landau also stated in April that they might not hit the December 2014 release date for Avatar 2. However, if production does in fact start up this fall, that release date may be attainable after all.
Avatar 2 comes to theaters in 2014. The film is directed by James Cameron.
Avatar 3 comes to theaters in 2015. The film is directed by James Cameron.
Avatar 4 is in development and stars Sigourney Weaver. The film is directed by James Cameron.

@bawnian-dexeus Yeah that would be a good way of ending it, but I always got confused, I just thought it was affecting them to the extent that they had shorter life spans etc. Anyways, I like the idea of seeing the ocean of Pandora etc :) Planets, hmm we will need those darn humans to come back with their big space ships etc.

@bradley-tyler Would be good if JP4 went with the old idea of having a virus slowly eliminate the dinos one by one to close the story if a trilogy would be impossible. As for Avatar, we already know the second will be about the oceans of Pandora, so the next two could explore other regions of the planet of the other moons of the neighboring titan planet

@bawnian-dexeus To be honest, they are stuggling to come up with one story for JP4 so I don't think they could make a new trilogy..... plus JP is all about going to the ISLAND, it would be stupid to take it away from the island.....unless they found them on another island ;) But Avatar.....how can he come up with a story that will span another 3 films?! I can see it being the JP4 issue, I loved Avatar, but a 4th could really push it......

The face says it all, why the hell do we need more Smurfs in space...... I thought the first movie was Bad, some people liked it but come on, We can't find anybody else to fight sow we go after the Blue Indians on another planet. Better find a way to clone John Wayne if Earth is going to win

@skywise No worries, man. I completely see what you mean. He is a lot like Lucas in many ways. And I agree that Cameron's writing proves to be a bit shallow a lot of the time. Granted, I know we're not talking on the level of a Michael Bay movie or anything, but shallow coming from someone with the kind of mind Cameron has and for the level of quality from the films he puts out. Because, as you said, he clearly has a way of making his films more captivating than some of his writing/dialogue would suggest :)

@thedude-abides i probably should have done some research on that situation but thank you for clearing it up for me. It is still a good story and as i said below Cameron may not be the greatest writer around but he definatly knows how to weave a story. In some ways it reminds me of Lucas. He comes up with these brilliant stories but usually lets others write them (except the SW prequels of course and in that case its pretty obvious that he should have just stuck with his original formula). Cameron is a better writer in my mind but you see what i am getting at?

@skywise Agreed, although that whole Pirana 2 thing is misunderstood by a lot of folks. He was a co-director along with another gentleman, a total douche with no talent for the business by Cameron's recollection, who basically had creative control on the film over Cameron.
Cameron basically got himself fired for being disobedient, and had essentially nothing to do with the making of the film or the film itself despite him receiving partial credit for his time on the set, which is what drove him to writing his own movies. Regardless, I completely agree with all of what you said. I was disappointed in those comments he made as well.

I was pretty disapinted when he essentially made the comment that he was all about doc*mentaries and Avatar. Essentially stating that any story he wanted to tell could be told through Avatar while making semi-political statements through entertainment.
one thing i have come to realize is that Hollywood elite do not make good politicians.
I wish they would just focus on what they do...entertain.

@thedude-abides there is no denying the genius behind aliens and the 2 terminators but before that his first film was non other that Pirhana 2: the Spawning which was absolutly horrid (aside from the B-movie shlock that it was). I read that he had been fired from the job and actually stole footage to finish the film.
But your absolutly right. At some point all the great artists have it, then they lose it, then its gone for ever.
There are a few notable exceptions and David Cronenberg comes to the top of my mind. Some, like Cronenberg manage to adapt and stay valid but that is a rare thing indeed.

I'm just sad about the fact that the career of one of the greatest directors of the past generation is, for all intents and purposes, at it's end.
The guy was Tarantino before Tarantino in terms of the way he entered the business (driving trucks before writing two spec scripts in the mid 80s and going on to direct them, the first, a proposed sequel to Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi classic, Alien, and the second, an original idea about a time traveling hitman sent back through time to alter the course of history titled, The Terminator).
After taking an 11-year hiatus, Cameron's made one film in the last 15 years. Now that guy who continuously bashes Hollywood for never having any original ideas has vowed never to come up with an original concept on his own again, and is gearing up for 3 sequels to a film that, of itself, is a rip off of traditional Native American films throughout Hollywood.
He obviously still has a lot to say as an entrepreneur and a filmmaker, politically speaking. But, as with all artists at some point or another, he appears to have lost the creative inspiration that made him so successful early on in his career.

@skywise Agreed. Especially at this rate. By the time we get Avatar 2, 30 or so percent of the hype will be gone.

@dan1@ROFLitschristian I think its also important to note that Avatar was the movie that herladed the new wave of 3D films as well as being his first film in a looong time. That is the sort of thing that gets peoples attention.
But simultanius and back to back releases of new Avatars will probably not have the same effect. I am sure they will do well and quite possably fill a few more of the top 10 all time best selling movies but i doubt they will have the same hype factor that Avatar did.

@bawnian-dexeus It's not even that. I know I don't have to watch it. I would give his films a chance if he wasn't such a giant douche. He's such a hypocrite and everything he says is always a smartass remark. And yet, he gets all this attention and fame... >:|

@jimthar and all the Haters:
Yes, its just what we need and want! I really don't understand why so many of you actually think the majority of us wouldn't want to see Avatar sequels... The first movie made 2.7 billion worldwide, lots and lots of people went to see it 3 times, 4 or even 5 times, why do you think that was possible?
Because the movie is a piece or art, because the movie was something great, something magical and something epic. I am so happy they are doing multiple sequels and I really hope they will be able to keep the extreamly high standard the first movie had. Oooh I feel the magic again and I think I will watch the first one again this week, for the 8th or 9th time. :)

Agreed, @XxNickTheFilmCriticXx. Though it's not so much hilarious, it is appalling. Exaggeration, seeing as I enjoyed Avatar for what it was, but whatever. In truth, Tolkiens world shouldn't be compared to Cameron's unless we're discussing WETA's fantastic abilities of bringing fictional worlds to life. :P
